Robin P | 5768 comments This book didn't immediately engage me, so I read it off and on over more than a month. That wasn't a good idea, as there are many characters and plot strands, which I had some trouble keeping track of. It does evoke the era of the 1920's in England. It has several strong female characters, of which the main one is based on a historical figure. In fact, the men seem rather weak or just evil compared to the women. There are at least 5 main POV's and I found the ending overly melodramatic for several characters. Still, it's well done for what it is. I like it MUCH better than Life After Life, which was just depressing.

I thought it should be called Death After Death. Every time she "learned" from the past, she just got into another bad situation. I guess the end is supposed to make up for it. Maybe another problem is that I didn't know the book would be partly about Nazis and I CAN NOT read any more books about Nazis.

Shrines was lighter in the sense of shenanigans among the rich, although there is a dark side to the crime world, of course.
