Man I love this book so much. I'm cautiously optimistic at this point. I think it's really going to depend on
1) How good they can make the Oasis look
2) How much buy in they get from all the copyright owners. If they can't use most of the stuff it won't be nearly as good.
At a minimum they need to get the rights for the stuff used in the various gates: Monty Python & The Holy Grail, Zork, War Games, etc..
And that ideally all most of the Giant Robots.

Spielberg mean that they're not going to try to make it on the cheap."
That's a definite positive. On the other hand I feel like Spielberg's latest movies have all been ... overproduced is the word I want to use. (It's from the music industry, does it translate to film?) They feel like there's been put so much effort and money into it so that all the rough edges have been filed off to the point where they lack heart. Ready Player One needs heart if it is going to work IMO.

Yep.That's probably the biggest challenge. I don't think that Spielberg has a totally blank slate to work with.

And anyways he is busy till 2016 (The BFG scheduled to release on July 1, 2016). There is good chance he might drop this in the meantime.

I'm just not going to get my hopes up for the movie. That way I can be pleasantly surprised if it is good. And if it not good, I won't be disappointed, I'll avoid it, and I'll always have this incredibly fun and amazing book to read.
However, I am a Spielberg fan. He is a great director. So the movie has a lot going for it so far.

Interstellar also coming to mind. He was originally suppose to direct that as well.
