PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments Is there anyone whose mind John Boyne can't inhabit? In the 3rd book of his Elements Quartet, he gives us Freya, a talented burns specialist doctor, but a vengeful manipulator of the unwary. Fire is ironically chilling.

If you want a totally wacky alien-human story in an apocalyptic setting, you might want to try this unusual entertainer.

message 2886: by Rowan (new)

Rowan MacDonald | 405 comments Since this thread is Reviews and Thoughts, I figured I would offload some thoughts on recent DNFs (I don't review books I don't finish).

The Hitwoman's Guide to Reducing Household Debt by Mark Mupotsa-Russell The Hitwoman's Guide to Reducing Household Debt by Mark Mupotsa-Russell - the biggest case of misleading cover and marketing I've encountered with a book. I anticipated dark humour, a quirky vibe, but only got darkness, brutality, and annoyance for the forty pages I lasted.

All the Missing Children by Zahid Gamieldien All the Missing Children by Zahid Gamieldien - depression in book form. Boring and disjointed, completely void of hope. I don't know anybody who has enjoyed this read.

All You Took From Me by Lisa Kenway All You Took From Me by Lisa Kenway - I lasted almost 120 pages before the insufferable main character, Clare, became too much.

Diving, Falling by Kylie Mirmohamadi Diving, Falling by Kylie Mirmohamadi - Another immensely unlikable main character. Beyond pretentious. It felt out of touch and I was unable to connect with any characters.

The Shortest History of Music by Andrew Ford The Shortest History of Music by Andrew Ford - an incredibly technical thesis masquerading as general non-fiction. I don't think the average reader would understand much - I didn't.

Thanks for those insights Rowan. Very helpful, as Andrea says. And although we are all different in our views of various books, your opinion is respected.

Rowan MacDonald | 405 comments Thank you for your words, Andrea and Brenda. Sharing my brief thoughts here is a way to ensure the lost time spent on those books wasn't for nothing! 😊 I don't like being 'negative' and hope others might have better luck with them!

At least sharing your thoughts will help remind you in the future of what went wrong for you.

Damo | 560 comments Oh no Rowan, two of those books are actually sitting here in front of me on my desk!

There they were, all bright and happy, promising so much, now they're dark and brooding and staring at me saying "read me IF YOU DARE!!!" Ha ha ha.

Here's hoping my tolerance for insufferable characters and darkness and brutality holds me in better stead.
