Irish author Kevin Barry has sent some wild Irish characters to snowy Montana in the early, untamed American west. The Heart in Winter is funny, tragic, lawless, and full of heart, not only in winter. It is quite a ride!

When I picked this book to fill a spot in a challenge I had no idea it would become one of my favourite reads this year. Set in the leprosarium on the Hawaiian Island of Moloka'i, it tells the story of a seven year old with leprosy torn from her family in the 1890s and sent there for essentially the rest of her life.
