Rita Todacheene is a crime scene photographer who also has been able to see ghosts all her life. At a particularly gruesome crime scene the deceased woman breaks through Rita's defenses to demand justice. To get some peace Rita investigates, leading her to a dangerous conspiracy. In alternating chapters we go through Rita's childhood and relationship with her mother and grandmother. These sections are slower and personal, in a disorienting contrast to the murder investigation that seems to categorize this novel as a thriller or mystery. I would have enjoyed the family story as a novella more than this whole novel, but it was a nice change from the stories I have been reading lately.
