It was a novel and had a yellow fabric cover with a cartoon, possibly of one of the ladies, stamped on it. I read it in the 80s but I'm sure it's older than that.

They are friends, or at least cordial, as I recall. I would say it takes place in US or Britain, and I think they got the cans from their husbands.
