Drace (dracenines) | 7448 comments Earlier this year I started a very long project thread to take care of numerous issues with the current UK editions of books written by the author J.G. Ballard. That thread has died, but in the months since then, I have been advised by librarians to break very long project threads up into individual books. As such, I will be letting the long Ballard thread die and begin creating one smaller project thread at a time to take care of the books that have issues that still need to be corrected.

There are several issues that need to be taken care of with the current UK editions of High-Rise by J.G. Ballard.

1. Ebook Edition: High-Rise (ISBN 9780007382910)

Please note that though this book’s ISBN needs to be moved to an ACE, there are still a few issues with its information that need to be corrected before the move in order for the book to be accurate.

As I understand it, if the publisher changes the cover art for an ebook edition, an ACE is created rather than simply editing the details for the original ebook edition. If I am incorrect about this, please let me know and do not edit the details so that I can rewrite the post in order to accurately reflect the changes that need to be made.

- The publication date is incorrect. It was published June 28, 2012.

- The ASIN is missing. It needs to be 000738291X.

- The cover art for this edition of the ebook seems to have been manually edited by whoever uploaded it, which is against Goodreads policy (all of the current Fourth Estate editions of Ballard's books have a white border around the edges of the cover). The correct, complete cover art is available here: https://i.harperapps.com/hcuk/covers/...

2. Ebook ACE Creation

A new ACE needs to be created for the movie tie-in cover of the ebook. Information should be as follows:

TITLE: High-Rise
AUTHOR: J.G. Ballard
INTRODUCTION: Ned Beauman
ISBN-10: 000738291X
ISBN-13: 9780007382910
ASIN: 000738291X
PUBLISHER: Fourth Estate
DATE PUBLISHED: June 28, 2012
NUMBER OF PAGES: 272
FORMAT: Ebook
DESCRIPTION [note: the full description includes a paragraph about how the movie adaptation of High-Rise is coming soon in 2016. As this paragraph is now severely outdated, I have not included it in the description. If it needs to be included despite being out of date, please let me know before making any edits so I can add it back into this post.]:
‘Later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog, Dr Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months.’

Within the walls of a high-tech forty-storey high-rise, the residents are hell-bent on an orgy of sex and destruction, answering to primal urges that their utopian surroundings can’t satisfy. The high-rise is a would-be paradise turned dystopia, ruled by intimidation and violence, and, as the residents organize themselves for war, floor against floor, no one wants it to stop…

EDITION LANGUAGE: English
COVER ART: https://harpercollins.co.uk/products/...

===

3. Kindle Edition: High-Rise (ASIN B008CBD38K)

All my earlier questions and comments about ebook ACEs also apply to the Kindle edition. Please let me know.

- The cover art is, again, a cropped version of the proper cover art. The correct, complete cover art is available here: https://i.harperapps.com/hcuk/covers/...

===

4. Kindle ACE Creation

A new ACE needs to be created for the movie tie-in cover of the Kindle edition. Information should be as follows:

TITLE: High-Rise
AUTHOR: J.G. Ballard
INTRODUCTION: Ned Beauman
ASIN: B008CBD38K
PUBLISHER: Fourth Estate
DATE PUBLISHED: June 28, 2012
NUMBER OF PAGES: 272
FORMAT: Ebook
DESCRIPTION [see my note on the ebook description, it applies here as well]:
‘Later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog, Dr Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months.’

Within the walls of a high-tech forty-storey high-rise, the residents are hell-bent on an orgy of sex and destruction, answering to primal urges that their utopian surroundings can’t satisfy. EDITION LANGUAGE: English
COVER ART: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/8...

5. Movie Tie-In Paperback: High-Rise (ISBN 9780008134891)

- The publication date is incorrect. It should be March 10, 2016.

- It should probably be noted in the edition field that this is a movie tie-in edition.

Thank you to anyone who can help with these issues, and anyone who has helped or will help with The Great Ballard Clean-Up Project in the weeks and months to come.

Drace (dracenines) | 7448 comments Belated reply, but thank you for your help, Patricia.

#3 and #4 still need to be taken care of for any other librarians who might want to step in and help.

Drace (dracenines) | 7448 comments Bumping the thread. #3 and #4 (fixing the cover art for the old edition and creating a new ASIN) still need to be taken care of.

Linde | 6549 comments Hi Drace,
#3 - Seems to have been done by someone. And what kind of website is harper apps? I don't think I can use that.
#4 - It would help if you add the hyperlink to the book instead of just the cover, that way I can check the ISBN/ASIN and/or other details. I added the book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/edit/2...

Please help the Librarians to focus on the requests that are still open, by moving this topic to the "Archived" folder (and your other completed requests*). I can't do that. Instructions:
1. Click on the tiny "edit"-button at the right of the topic's title (only available for desktop/laptop, not in the app)
2. Change the folder to "Archived"
3. Don't forget to click on "SAVE"

Greetings

* It would be great if you moved all your 'complete' requests about adding new books/editions to the "[Closed] Added Books/Editions" folder and all the other 'complete' requests to the "Archived" folder. Go to the Home page of the Goodreads Librarians Group and click on "My Group Topics" (find an example screenshot here.).

Drace (dracenines) | 7448 comments Linde wrote: "#3 - Seems to have been done by someone. And what kind of website is harper apps? I don't think I can use that."

It is a direct link to the cover art by itself taken from the website for the publishing imprint Fourth Estate, which is owned by HarperCollins UK. Harper refers to the name of the publisher of the book. HCUK in the URL also refers to the publisher. Direct link, if it helps: https://www.4thestate.co.uk/products/...

The cover art is still a badly cropped version that needs to be changed. As you can see from the link, the red and green collage art for High-Rise purposefully includes a white border around the edges.

Linde | 6549 comments Hi Drace, thanks for explaining everything. I saw the white border before, I didn't realize that that was what was missing. So... Done!

message 16: by Drace (new)

Drace (dracenines) | 7448 comments Thanks for the help. One final thing: the e-book in #1 still needs its cover changed to the uncropped version. Could you please take care of that?

message 17: by Drace (new)

Drace (dracenines) | 7448 comments Giving this one last bump in case Linde is still around. Otherwise I'll just start a new thread in the cover art folder.

message 18: by Linde (new)

Linde | 6549 comments Hi there, do you have a link to the page, including the cover (so not just the cover)? I have to check if it's the e-book edition and now I can't.
