Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments Jen, turns out this book falls in the Steeplechase Tag I got, so I am going to be starting it right away-no worries though, I do not expect it to be a fast read for me as I have a load of others to read

Jen K | 3143 comments Just looking to set this up and found this thread. You are awesome!

I have the hard cover waiting for me at home. Hoping to dive in this weekend but also hoping to sneak in my Steeplechase book first (after finishing my current 2 books). My reading is super slow this week but may even start Jade Legacy slowly while I finish others. I'm excited to finish up the trilogy while it is still somewhat fresh.

message 3: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments Yes! it starts with a bang! I am only through chapter 2, so no hurry-I found a book was reading it and fit Steeplechase, so I figured this one was just a leisure read...then second role I landed on Asian Lit. HaHa-where this is tagged 6 times. The book gods want me to use this book there

message 4: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments I read the first 4 chapters and aim to try to read about 70 pages a day. It is good so far. I really feel bad for Wen. I like the relationship between her and Hilo.

message 5: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Read through Chapter 10. It is slow but good. There is so much building throughout the family and world. The Mountain seems to keep having the edge as No Peak takes some tough blows.

message 6: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments I tell ya, I am enjoying the story of the medicine and politics more than the battles-I am about 1/2 through chapter 15-so anything up to that point feel free to chat about-and trust me there are some things that will shock! LoL. Each time I think "not liking this one as much" Fonda hits with the unexpected!

message 7: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Oh nice! I totally agree with the politics and medicine being better than the fights. I love the world building and positioning in the politics.

Feeling for Shae at the moment. I love the lady but she is struggling, not on top of the game to beat the Mountain and the relationship with Woon is overly complicated.

I love that Anden has switched to medicine. His trip back to Espenia was a sad one.

Hoping that Hilo and Wen can get back to a good place. They are so much stronger together.

message 8: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments I tell you, I have started disliking Shae a bit. Fonda is making her into a smart woman who is stupid in love and sex! Pissing me off-LoL

Anden is becoming my favorite-sticking to his gut and being who he wants to be.

The whole Hilo/Wen....well you will see soon....

message 9: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Made it through the First Interlude.

I agree about Shae. She was so much better and interesting in the first book. Maybe she can turn it around now that she is married.

Anden is great about following his own path. Thankful for Hilo and Wen to be back. Looks like there is a jump in time in Chapter 15. Excited to see where they are at next.

message 10: by Joanne (last edited Jan 08, 2024 05:32AM) (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments I like how she is jumping (years at a time in places). It is ensuring that there is no "drag" going on.

You are speeding up! Lol-I am using this has my afternoon tea book, so I can set it on my lap. Still recovering and unable to hold this door-stopper. Intention is to get through 3 chapters everyday, will see how that does,

message 11: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Yes, I'm trying to pace to read it before the library due date, 10 days total-ish :)

I borrowed the hardcover too and it is such a massive book! So far I lay myself and the book across the bed to read without holding it up. I didn't have surgery and not interested in holding it. I hope your recovery is going well!

message 12: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Just finished Chapter 27 and WOW! Where are you at?

message 13: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments I fell behind, have not read the last couple afternoons-be hoping to pick up again today

message 14: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments No worries! Excited to discuss when you get there but no rush.

message 15: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments Finally got to finish Chapter 16 last night-I was very proud of Anden when he channeled Lan and grabbed the Epsie's unmentionables-LMAO!

I have a PT this morning and a Library meeting to get ready for tonight, most likely won't get back to it until tomorrow. I do want to get a move on as it fits Steeplechase and I want to keep moving there. I got stagnate in last years challenges and want to avoid that this year.

message 16: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Yes Anden is really the best. Just finished another great chapter with him. I'm up to about page 400. The book really is epic in showing the legacy with all the time lapses. It is kind of fun to see the kiddos grow up and be their own people. It is an engaging book for being so big.

I have more travel coming up so I may try my best to finish by Sunday because this book is too big to carry.

I get it with the stagnancy. I got stuck a few times myself. I like that Steeplchase has a bit more flexibility though I get the worst roles and are to be motivated when progress is so slow.

message 17: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Just finished chapter 42. This book is so violent yet so still so good.

message 18: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments My meeting got cancelled yesterday so I am moving a long and got into chapter 20-

Yes, this really reminds me of the mafia books and movies from the 70's

message 19: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Nice, yes with the clan and the Family. I do love all the strategy and relationships.

message 20: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Oh my gosh, I just got to the third interlude and the book is slightly tipping into too much territory for me. I'm not sure my emotions can take another hundred plus pages.

message 21: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments I did it. I finished. I'm completely strung out by the roller coaster ride but it was a good ending.

message 22: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments Great to hear it was a great ending-I am up to about chapter 22-and hoping today and tomorrow will be productive. Have a great trip this week and we can catch up when you get back-just drop a note hear when you return

message 23: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments I went into our group requests and approved you! Welcome to the strange and odd good reads people ;)

message 24: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments I'm still online! Arrived in Vermont for some necessary tasks after a night in NYC with my bestie. Needed to get done before work travel started again. Are you at the second interlude?

Thanks for approving me! Now that I'm back on my computer, I will introduce myself.

message 25: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments Did not get the reading time I expected over the week-end and Daughter came by yesterday and we spent the afternoon with a bottle of wine..'nuf said-LoL

This week is the book sale at my library, and 2 other organizers have covid-I am scrambling right now to find help but the book is due back soon so I have to get dig into this week.

message 26: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Daughter and wine are always the right choice!!

Good luck with book sale. I finally got my Covid booster with this new wave going around.

I'm excited for you to dig in. I did flag in the middle but the ending was good.

message 27: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments Chapters 24-28

I was mesmerized during these chapters-(view spoiler)

message 28: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Yes that scene and sequence was amazing! Why didn't Hilo just run? It was the worst warning possible.

I can't imagine how Ayt Mada felt bleeding and no one even pretending to help her. Shae is too kind but the book wouldn't be the same without Ayt Mada. I love Anden.

message 29: by Joanne (last edited Jan 20, 2024 09:12AM) (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments Hoping to wrap this up next week-I can only read it in the afternoon so I don't have to hold it-Ugh and the therapist tells me it could be months (maybe never) that I can read a busty book like this in print! Anyway, this week is loaded with doctor and PT but going to give it a shot in finishing it!

message 30: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that, especially as a fantasy reader, the biggest books are often the best.

I know it isn't the same but I LOVE my Kindle. Wirecutter had a fun article on customizing the Kindle to use a stand holder and a REMOTE to click to the next page!
https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/bl...

Good luck with the appointments and enjoy the rest of the book!! The last 200 pages ish are so hard to put down!

message 31: by Joanne (last edited Jan 22, 2024 07:28AM) (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments I have reached the last 200 pages, it was late last night so I stopped. Have a few things to do today then I will probably spend the afternoon finishing.

The story of Tar-ohhh, made me happy and sad

Did you see my comment over at Epic Fantasy? I was wondering about the world she shows on the map and the continents that have not been written about-do you think she might do a follow-up to this world?

message 32: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Right? Poor Tar!!! There needed to be justice but he wasn't in his right mind and needed other support. I'm surprised that Anden considered this solution.

I wonder? She really finished Kekon for me and I don't know how she could top it but I would be open to reading if she tried.

message 33: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments I was impressed by Anden. I think he has really come into his own, and although still a Greenbone he thinks for himself -I think he is one of my favorite characters here. Lee showed his growth. I am hoping (shhh don't tell me) he is still alive at the end!

message 34: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Ha, I won't say but also one of my favorites!

message 35: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments A satisfying ending. I hesitate to give it 5 stars-There were parts, like Hilo knocking a Helicopter out of the sky that were just too Marvel Super Hero for me 😂🤣, but no argument- it is was a great story from beginning to end.

Lee has the touch, where she can bring together the many intricacies of life-politics, religion, sex-still include fantasy and make it all seem very real.

Ru-that made me cry-Shae sitting in a bathtub of jade-that took my breath away.

message 36: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments YES!!! It was so good and satisfying in the end. Shae in the jade and permanency of the torture were just too cruel. And then Ru. I cried so many times and almost gave on the book after those to events. Ru really was pretty innocent in the "war".

The helicopter scene was pretty weird and seemed out of place putting the pilot in danger.

Such a good trilogy though and I quite enjoyed Lee's writing as well.

message 37: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments I hope we can find another series to read together Jen! This has been a great ride with you!

message 38: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments Absolutely! We picked a good one and I enjoyed reading with you!
