AnB Love (anb-love) | 2 comments "Do Book Reviews Really Matter?

To fellow authors and avid readers,

As I embark on the journey of publishing my second novel, 'Circle With 3 Corners', I find myself grappling with a question: how significant are book reviews to our readers? Despite conducting extensive research and seeking various opinions, I remain conflicted.

Undoubtedly, feedback and ratings hold immense importance for us authors. However, I've come across numerous reader posts expressing that their choice of reading material isn't heavily influenced by reviews. Additionally, there's skepticism about the effectiveness of 'giveaways' in boosting visibility, readership, and sales. Many authors, like myself, understand that marketing demands considerable time and effort, resources that we'd prefer to channel into our writing.

Consequently, I find myself in a state of confusion and helplessness, uncertain about which marketing medium and tactic genuinely yield results. Your insights on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
AnB Love
Author of: 'Imprinted Curse' and 'Circle With 3 Corners'

Suzy, are you interested in reading and writing a book review? Can you take a moment to read my synopsis below and get back to me?

Robert Aaron Jaeger no longer has the emotional fight to outlast his grief. Less than a month ago, his wife and four-year-old daughter were in a terrible accident on the downtown streets of Seattle. The four-year-old came away with scratches. His wife, Christina, succumbed to her injuries. Under the disguise of rafting through the Glenwood Canyon, Robert sets out to kill himself, but his plan is thwarted when he stumbles upon a woman standing in freezing water aiming to do the same thing.

Lilly Radford has been riddled with guilt since the day her baby died and there’s not been a day she hasn’t beat herself up about it. She finally snaps, takes her rent money, and uses it to keep her tank filled until the money runs out. With her car running on fumes, she’s forced to exit off I-70 in Glenwood Springs at the Grizzly Creek Rest Stop where she gives up and falls in the river.

After Robert rescues Lilly and later steps off the plane in Seattle, Zachary Butler lurks close to his heels, determined to kill Robert for getting him fired. Zachary is much more than a typical killer on the loose. His disorder causes him to converse with the good side of himself to collaborate on a scheme for revenge. To complicate his chaotic existence, his wife, Ethel, threatens to derail his plan.

As danger looms and a loved one becomes a victim, Robert and Lilly let down their guard and wrestle with their physical attraction to each other. Determined to right past wrongs, their self-centered past haunts them, but if they aren’t careful, they could miss the beauty lying just below the surface of their pain ... if the killer has his way.

Anger. Madness. Darkness. Murder. Obsession. Ambition. How will it all end?

Reviews have their place. Seems like they have dual purposes: 1) getting actual feedback on the book, and 2) serving as a marketing/visibility-boosting tool.

For marketing purposes, sometimes it helps to think outside the box.

My podcast, The Page 1 Challenge is a unique, short-form podcast for book lovers which is a fun, alternative way to boost the visibility of your book.

The simple premise is that I read the first page (approximately) of your book BEFORE revealing the title or author. Can that taste make the listener hungry for the rest of the book? That's the challenge! i.e. instead of judging a book by its cover, it gets judged by the first page. A silly but fun game to play.

Each episode is short (typically less than 5 minutes) so the listener/reader investment is low. And I include in the episode notes links to your author website and Amazon book page.

And it's free! I'm trying to build up the audience for my podcast just like you're trying to build up readership for your book. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Granted, not every book goes from zero to 60 on the first page or so, but if yours does - this novel marketing approach might be for you.

If you're interested, please DM me here or contact me via my website ThePage1Challenge[dot]com

Tony Travis | 14 comments Marketing is something you need to think long term about. It's hard to get your work in front of eyes and much of what you see is hard to navigate. Especially without putting money into Ads ect. Think how selling Mary Kay or Avon is like haha. At first you make sales to friends and family and that runs dry.

Ask what are your expectations for sales? And work up from there imo.

Who is going to buy the book and why?

Then you can think about how to get to those folks.

As we all know, my or your books ect are not for everybody. People like what they like for whatever reason. Nothing wrong or right about it, but you could be perfect and still not make a sale.

Just some things to keep in mind.

We independents have it more difficult as we are using our own judgement in a field, we may know nothing or little about.
