The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon

A midwife in late 1700s Maine takes it upon herself to investigate the death of a prominent citizen accused of rape. Good historical novel/courtroom drama/murder mystery.

In this addition to the Nonna Maria series, the shrewd Italian grandmother has two goals: to foil an assassination and to help a young woman find the treasure left by her grandfather. The book works fine as a standalone.

The Last Word by Elly Griffiths

Falsely advertised as a Ruth Galloway mystery -- it isn't, she doesn't appear. Reminded me of Richard Osman's retiree detectives. I liked the cast, I liked the plot other than the solution to the murders. I liked it but I didn't love it. 3 stars.
