James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting DIRTY OLD TOWN (2020) by Gabriel Valjan, the first novel in his ongoing series featuring Boston private eye Shane Cleary set during the mid 70's.

The book earned an Anthony Award nomination for Best Paperback Mystery Novel, although at just 160 pages in length it is really a novella. Still it is pretty good so far.

Sam Wyndham #3........Calcutta, India in 1921. Sam is hunting a ritual murderer while battling his opium addiction. This is a very fine series with many fascinating historical views of India during the British Raj. I liked the story but it didn't do anything special for me. 3 stars.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting THE DYING DAY by Vaseem Khan, the second novel in his ongoing mystery series featuring detective inspector Persis Wadia of the Indian Police Force and British forensic scientist Archie Blackfinch.

The series is set in India around 1950 just a few years after the country has gained its independence from Britain. I read the first novel in the series a few weeks ago and liked it enough that I special ordered the sequel.

Araych | 678 comments Clete Clete (Dave Robicheaux, #24) by James Lee Burke by James Lee Burke

Dave Robicheaux #24. Told in the 1st person by Dave's great friend Clete. Clete tries to track down some drug dealers who have mistakenly destroyed his beloved Cadillac. The plot ends up pretty much all over the place from there. Mr. Burke has again given to us some memorable characters and violent set-pieces but the focus of the book is Clete's mental state. I love the way Burke writes and I've read almost all of his work but I found it a bit uncomfortable living in Clete's head. Downgraded 1 star for that; 4 stars.

Kevin Kerney #2. Ex-cop Kerney is hired as a New Mexico Forest Service ranger. On patrol he finds evidence of poaching and in following up on this crime finds much more serious and deadly criminality. I liked this thriller a lot -- good characters and action sequences and wonderful descriptions of the land, flora and fauna of the great state of New Mexico. 4 stars.
