I've finished Fear Stalks the Village by Ethel Lina White. It was pretty good, with the focus on how poison pen letters upset the equilibrium of an otherwise tranquil, idyllic village. No murders, actually, which is unusual. I just bought a bunch of new (and a couple of used) books all featuring poison pen letters so it will be interesting to see how the stories differ from book to book.

If you haven't read it yet, I can recommend Agatha Christie's The Moving Finger. It's also about poison-pen letters in a tranquil English village.

Thank you! I've already read it, but I'll be reading it again this year, along with about a dozen other crime novels featuring poison pen letters, all published between the 1930s and the 1960s.

Reading a version of this The Adventures of Alyx contained in Joanna Russ: Novels & Stories (LOA #373): The Female Man / We Who Are About To . . . / On Strike Against God / The Complete Alyx Stories / Other Stories. Kind of a hasty choice, I suppose. I mean, I've only owned the former for about 40 years, so what was the hurry?

Araych | 677 comments Out on the Rim Out on the Rim (Arthur Case Wu, #2) by Ross Thomas by Ross Thomas

Wu and Durant #2. I don't think Ross Thomas could write a bad book if he tried. I've read several of his and really liked all of them. However I think this is one of his weakest only because it was written in the 1980's and takes place mostly in the Philippines and is focused on the Marcos/Aquino governments and the attendant fictionalized shenanigans. Double crosses, triple crosses and even more complicated trickery abound, all of which is Thomas' metier. Unfortunately it all doesn't carry much import today. I did like it but 3 stars.

Araych | 677 comments Viviana Valentine Gets Her Man Viviana Valentine Gets Her Man by Emily J. Edwards by Emily Edwards

Viviana is the secretary to a PI in New York in 1950. And 1950 was 73 years ago so I guess it's (gulp) "historical"? Anyway it's cute and moves right along but the book is not written at a high level. And a couple of minor points for the editor: Americans listen to the radio, not the wireless and cops raid cat houses, not can houses. 2 stars.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments I'm going a bit retro this week and just started on NIGHT SOLDIERS (1988) by Alan Furst, the first book in his ongoing series set in Europe both before and during WWII.

My father is a big fan of Furst's stuff, so I thought I would give one a try and see how it stacks up against the other WWII novels I have sampled over the years.
