Cynthia Johnson ☕️ | 2 comments Anyone else love to listen to music while reading? I myself prefer instrumental as I get distracted if there is a singer. I found an instrumental playlist for Sarah J Mass on Spotify that’s okay. Anyone have recommendations?

Maddie Monroe | 3 comments Some of the BEST reading playlists I’ve found are on YouTube, I’ve found a bunch of ACOTAR and Fourth Wing themed ones, I just throw them on my TV and they usually have pretty aesthetic photos and really great reading music. My fav is just called “To Velaris — the city of starlight” posted by Neamisaofi

Lainey M. I have a handful of YouTube playlists! I have one for strictly for fantasy and one for cozy fantasy bc those are my favorites, but I have one I called “get lost in a book” that has probably weeks worth of compilations or ambiance. I can’t read without background noise lol

SleepingPixels (booksteacraftrepeat) | 10 comments I love to listen to Lofi Girl and searching Sleep Music on Youtube, I also find that music with lyrics distract me too. Occassionally I'll put on some rain sounds or fire crackles for that extra coziness hehe.

Mya Marie (mya_marie) | 12 comments Interesting never given it a go - but I think like you have said, instrumental could be good. I might have to give it a go with my next read!

My partner is always watching tiktoks on his phone next to me when I am reading, so I guess I am use to the background noise haha!

Oh tell me about it! I have kids who sit next to me on their iPad's watching YouTube on full blast haha... I'm constantly saying, "can you turn it down? I'm reading :P"

Adesa | 3 comments I also listen to instrumental music while reading. I think the other recommendations given by other users are great and also things that I listen to. I once went through YouTube playlists and created my own Spotify playlist based on the songs I liked.

If you like relaxing instrumental music bluu on YouTube has some amazing videos where they link Spotify playlists that have every song.

Adesa | 3 comments Just realized the username was buuu. My bad.

Kailee Twitmire | 4 comments Personally, I like having some background noise while I read, so I will either play some sort of white noise or play a show I don’t care to watch with the volume lowered.

message 10: by Madeline (new)

Madeline Ingram | 12 comments Taylor swift instrumental! Something I mindlessly can listen too and don't have to think because it's typically playing in my head anyways lol.

Anya (readby_anya) | 1 comments I have Lofi Girl on currently, but i also like the lofi fantasy type videos on youtube as well! My fav while reading the ACOTAR series has been “Night Court Ambiance” type music.

✨bethany✨ | 18 comments I can only listen to instrumental music while I’m reading, or I’ll get distracted by the lyrics ahaha. I have a whole playlist full of movie soundtracks, and I also like some of the “tavern ambience” playlists on Spotify for the cosy feels

message 14: by Audille (new)

Audille Bardon | 2 comments I usually write some keywords and add the word "ambiance" at the end and it gives me nice playlists on YouTube.
I CANNOT listen to anything with lyrics though, so it’s only instrumental.
For example, if i read in mornings i would type "early morning reading ambiance " or if im in an intense fantasy book " fantasy revenge ambiance " or if im in a dark academia setting " dark academia reading ambiance " etc. I always find cool playlists like that!
Sometimes i do enjoys readalong with my favorite booktubers

message 15: by Susan (new)

Susan McIntosh | 1 comments I love to listen to music while I read. I have Spotify so I have made playlist for genres music to go with the genres of book I’m reading. Sometimes it’s fun to look up the book to see if there’s any premade playlist so I can find new music from my playlist.

meg (,,◕ ⋏ ◕,,) | 7 comments I’ve been listening to sleep token and finding ambience videos on YouTube with like lofi or classical!!

message 17: by SleepingPixels (new)

SleepingPixels (booksteacraftrepeat) | 10 comments Oh I also love having World of Warcraft ambience playing on YouTube, they have the best zone music, especially Elwynn Forest and The Barrens. I can easily get absorbed into their instrumental music while I’m reading a good fantasy book 😍

message 18: by Oreva (new)

Oreva | 2 comments I find music very distracting when I read 😩

message 19: by Leila (new)

Leila (leilameila) Love music while reading but agree it has to be instrumental otherwise I get distracted. Currently making my way through Throne of Glass series and discovered a ton of ToG inspired playlists on Spotify which are perfect. 🤩

message 20: by Rachel (last edited Jan 17, 2024 12:00PM) (new)

Rachel (oh_rachel_jane) | 3 comments Yes! I made an entire “city of starlight” playlist I always add to (instrumental + classical). And of course it has to have the booktok fantasy ode on it: Luminary by our boy Joel Sunny hehe. I use this playlist for all my fantasy reading but Velaris really inspired me.

Here is the playlist in case anyone wants to give it a follow or copy it!

"city of 🌌"
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2Vu...

Oh I also love the Classical playlists that Spotify makes. Royalcore, Dark Academia, and Enemies to Lovers are good ones I love to turn on.

message 21: by Z (new)

Z (freshcucumber) | 2 comments This is a good one I have a curated playlist on spotify but it also depends on the vibes of the read. But a safe bet is I will play a fantasy mash up of the LOTR sound track, GOT sound track, harry potter sound track, oooooold disney classical, and some good old classical music.

message 22: by Dominique (new)

Dominique | 1 comments I have read books with music and I can focus with a lot of background noise if the book is really good. I prefer no music lately tho.

message 23: by Annette (new)

Annette Beatwell (annetteb) | 2 comments I CAN NOT have any music playing while I read. One of the first things my professor said when I started my literature degree was to insist that you never have music playing in the background, particularly if you are reading verse. The music interferes with the rhythm of the writing. (And a good writer of prose will use rhythm for effect too).

He was absolutely right and I have never been able to get rid of my habit of reading music-free, even when I am reading something light. I graduated over thirty years ago.

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Stamps | 2 comments I do enjoy a good instrumental playlist sometimes but I actually pretty much only listen to ASMR when I read!! I’ll find a video that’s like soft brushing sounds or background whispering and I find it’s the perfect amount of background noise that’s soothing without distracting, and there are so many options :)
