Doro is an entity who changes bodies like clothes, killing his hosts by reflex or design. He fears no one until he meets Anyanwu. Anyanwu is a shapeshifter who can absorb bullets and heal with a kiss and savage anyone who threatens her. She fears no one until she meets Doro. Together they weave a pattern of destiny (from Africa to the New World) unimaginable to mortals.

Chapters 1 - 5

And I need to be able to keep that youthful body she keeps. But when she reveals herself, her husband gets sick. I wonder why that is. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-4: (view spoiler)[I love the style of speech in this book. It's very dialogue heavy, and Butler does a great job of differentiating characters by their manner of speech. I also appreciate Butler's obsession with strong women. Both Anyanwu in this book and Lilith in the Xenogenesis series can just body dudes through a wall if they want to, and I love that for them. Chapters 5-6: (view spoiler)[Lowkey I'm a big fan of Isaac. He's all caught up in Doro's awful schemes but he seems like a very legit dude. The timeskip is coming up though, so maybe he'll be an asshole when he's older. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 7-12: (view spoiler)[I'm actually sort of awed by how scary Doro's power is. At first I didn't really believe that a power that kills one by one could control so many people, but now that we've seen it in action more I totally get the fear. If he can't ever die then he can't really be defeated - all Anyanwu can do is run, forever. Such a simple power and it does so much for the story. (hide spoiler)]

Finished: (view spoiler)[Holy shit I'm so glad she didn't die. That last scene was GUT WRENCHING. Such a well-written character arc for Doro - he changed, but not completely, and he changed in a way that made absolute sense. (hide spoiler)]
