Jayme | 4526 comments Just thought I would get our thread up and running, so people can start checking in.

I did a quick look at my upcoming reads and have a few books that I can plug in already.

Beach - octopus on the cover - The Soul of an Octopus
ski lodge - wolf of on the cover - The Grand Lady of Yellowstone: & Other Yellowstone Wolf Stories - Apparently I'm into animals this Toppler

Anyone have any ideas for a team name?
And who would like to create a spreadsheet?

Katrisa | 4467 comments Hi Team! I am checking in but haven't gophered yet. I do my mom's shopping on Saturdays so I will do that when I get home.

Kristie | 19173 comments Hi guys, I'm here! I have no thoughts on team names yet.

Jayme - Thanks for setting up the thread. Later can you edit the first post to include links to the spreadsheet and all? I prefer not to be scorekeeper, basically just because I don't use spreadsheets. I do it right in the thread and it will probably end up lost. Did you want to be scorekeeper?

I have a few options as well. I will only be able to read two or three depending on what is chosen. These are in the order of my preference due to when they need to be returned to the library:
The Expectant Detectives - City (dog)
Beyond the Wand - City (actor)
Lone Wolf - Ski lodge (wolf)
Big Meg - Beach (shark)
Murder at Haven's Rock - Mountains (Alaska)
The Lonely Hearts Book Club - Ranch (Idaho)

I am still looking for additional options. Apparently I'm interested in animals this toppler too. lol

Lynn | 2974 comments Hello!

I'm afraid I'm going to be a lot less flexible that I usually am for this toppler, due to commitments that I previously made for buddy reads (and lesser so, ARCs) prior to knowing about the dates of the toppler.

During the toppler week I will be reading the following, and where / if they can be fit into the prompts:

The House Witch 3
Lake House - House
Ranch - Sun
City - Cat

Knife Skills for Beginners: A Novel
City - London

The Women
Maybe Ranch - California
I know this book is in Vietnam but there's also mention of Southern California in the blurb so it might have a significant part of the book?
Kristie, I see you've read the book already so maybe you would know? Confirmed

I also have to read the following books but can't seem to find anything to fit I'm afraid. If anyone sees anything obvious that I've missed then please do shout at me.
The Echo of Old Books
White Night
The Fifth Season

I'm sorry for being inflexible this time around. I might be able to move some things around to be able to fit other books instead but I would appreciate if I could be considered for the ones I have found a prompt for.

I can be the scorekeeper. Did you want me to create a spreadsheet also? I was looking at a few past spreadsheet and there is one that will work nicely.

Katrisa | 4467 comments I found a seashell book too - I can read Of Songs and Seashells

message 14: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Feb 10, 2024 05:28PM) (new)

Jayme | 4526 comments I created a spreadsheet and put a link on the top of our thread. I'm going to go ahead and start plugging books/readers into tasks, if that is ok with everyone.
Check the spreadsheet to see if that task is taken, but you can also read for it too - just let me know, so I can put your name down too.

and a museum in title book
Meet Me at the Museum
and a farm house on cover
Where the Ghosts Are The Ultimate Guide to Haunted Houses by Hans Holzer

Kristie | 19173 comments Thanks for doing the spreadsheet, Jayme.

Let's just plan the two you have on the spreadsheet for me for now. I should be able to fit another audio in, but Murder at Haven's Rock is another physical so I'm not sure I'll have time to get to it. I have a couple other audios, but I don't think they fit anywhere. I'll have to take another look at them later.

Way to go with filling one location already!

message 18: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Feb 11, 2024 05:07AM) (new)

Jayme | 4526 comments Sounds good, Kristie. The only reason I'm able to do maybe 4+ books is because Henry will be out of town skiing - freeing up my time!

I have updated the spreadsheet to here. It seems no one wants to visit the mountains lol

Does anyone have any other ideas for a team name?

♞ Pat Gent | 629 comments My Committment for Toppler
Book of the Little Axe by Lauren Francis-Sharma As Bright as Heaven by Susan Meissner City of the Dead (Alex Delaware, #37) by Jonathan Kellerman The Ranch (The Birch Creek Ranch, #3) by B.E. Baker The Thursday Murder Club (Thursday Murder Club, #1) by Richard Osman

Here is what I have lined up for the REST of February, so if any of these look like they might fit somewhere, feel free to point me in that direction. I could PROBABLY get one more read that week.
Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld Benjamin Franklin's Bastard by Sally Cabot Hollow Kingdom (Hollow Kingdom, #1) by Kira Jane Buxton The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka On Turpentine Lane by Elinor Lipman

RANCH ~ Book of the Little Axe by Lauren Francis-Sharma ~
Horse on the cover, line #32

CITY ~ City of the Dead (Alex Delaware, #37) by Jonathan Kellerman
City in Title, line #48

SKI LODGE ~ As Bright as Heaven by Susan Meissner
Winter Clothes on Cover, line 44

I can easily do three, but when I'm on a team, I can almost always push a fourth read for the week, so I'm open to suggestions.

Jayme | 4526 comments We are updated to here on the spreadsheet. We have Beach and Ski Lodge knocked out and are 1 away from our Ranch vacation.

I might be able to read one more, but will wait to see how the week goes. I have a few lined up for different spots, if need be.

I did. Had to walk away from the computer for a bit :)

message 26: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19173 comments I've been peeking at our spreadsheet and so far I haven't found any of my February reads that fit into our needed tasks. I'll keep looking for something for my third book.

(Me realizing I'm the one who wrote these tasks... 😑)

Spreadsheet Updated. And just out of curiosity, What is a Chirp library?

message 30: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19173 comments Perfect, Katrisa! Thanks. :)

Jayme, I believe Chirp is similar to Audible.

message 31: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Feb 11, 2024 12:57PM) (new)

Jayme | 4526 comments That makes sense, Kristie. I like the name "Chirp" much more than audible.

I've been wanting to get into audio books. This might be the year. I'll check it out. Thanks.

Kristie | 19173 comments I just noticed that Jan hasn't checked in yet, so I sent her a PM. She's still pretty new to topplers so I think she just forgot. I sent her a link so she could find us. :)

Today is a pretty busy day for me, so I probably won't check in much. I found a couple of other audiobooks that will fit open tasks. I'll wait to see what we still need later in the week, then post what I have available.

message 35: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4526 comments Sounds good, Kristie. I have a few books waiting in the wings also, if I have time to get to them. I was waiting for Jan to check in and see what tasks she can read.
Thanks for sending her a PM. :)

message 36: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4467 comments I also gophered for some open tasks. I could not find anything for ski or lodge in title though from either my owned books or library that was available now

message 37: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Feb 14, 2024 05:43AM) (new)

Jayme | 4526 comments I have the following books on a back burner, if I have enough time I may get to one more and was going to plug in as needed.
If the ski/lodge in title is a hard one to gopher, I will make it my first priority to read.
I don't want to commit though until I see how the week goes - my week is now becoming busier than I thought.

Ski Lodge -
set in France - The Conjurer
snow on cover - Simply Irresistible
lodge in title - The Winter Lodge

message 38: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19173 comments I think that's a good idea, Jayme. I also did not come up with a lodge book.

message 39: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4467 comments I have back-up possibility books for France, snow on cover, water in title, beach on cover, fish in title, turtle in title, and set in oregon

Jan Mc (mcfitzsatx) | 69 comments I'm so sorry, ladies, for being late this week. I lost access to my local library and to Hoopla (they are starting a new library card system), which is how I was going to help this week. However, I can still make an effort. I will read Come to Kill, set in New Zealand. Meanwhile, I will keep looking at my list for ways to help. (sniff, sniff)

message 41: by Jan Mc (new)

Jan Mc (mcfitzsatx) | 69 comments I can also read The Mountain in the Sea, which has mountain in the title.

message 42: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4526 comments No worries, Jan. We are glad that you are able to join us. I have updated the spreadsheet with your two noted books. 😊

message 43: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19173 comments Wow, that's crazy, Jan! Sounds like poor planning on your library's part to be down so long. Hopefully, they'll be back up next week and you'll have access to more then. In the meantime, it's great that you have two books already available that fit! Glad to see you here. :)

It may seem that way, but speaking as an employee of a big library, when you change your interface, it can take a long time for things to roll over, and the more services you offer, the longer that interfacing can take.

We just went through a change in our entire cataloging system - it affected everything from library cards to our digital catalog to our libby & hoopla interfacing to our website. It was a massive undertaking which we planned for over a year and which the staff across the entire system beta tested for close to six weeks, but once we pulled it over to the public side, there was about a three week process where we were "online" but things kept hiccuping as they found the places where this one thing affected that other thing and needed tweaking. Those kinds of things you just can't know until you take it live, and our patrons were supportive as we went through the process.

It works beautifully now, and it's so much better than the old system we were using before.

Not suggesting that's what happened in Jan's case. Just putting the other side of a possible story out there.

message 46: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19173 comments I suppose so, Pat, but it sounds like her library is completely down (both physical and online) for an extended time period, not just dealing with hiccups. Hiccups are to be expected.

message 48: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19173 comments Thanks, Jayme. I also have a backup book for snow on the cover. We'll see how we're doing and what our needs are as the week progresses.

message 49: by Jan Mc (new)

Jan Mc (mcfitzsatx) | 69 comments Thanks, Pat and Kristie. I just got off the phone with the library director (it pays to be the president of a local book club), and he has me set back up on Libby and Hoopla (for now). Sounds like I will have to pay to use Hoopla in a few months, but it might be worth it for me.

The three libraries in our county just combined, so the card system had to be revamped. I can see how complicated that would be and I'm glad it's not my job!

In any case, I'm set for those two books and will let you know ASAP if I can squeeze another in by Saturday!

message 50: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4526 comments Sounds good, Jan. Hope your library is up and running soon.
