Calvey | 279 comments in a couple podcasts over the last year Veronica has mentioned the type of books and I can't seem to remember how/what she said, but I remember thinking I should write it down. I am having trouble finding it here. Does anyone remember the conversation to write it out or at least remember the podcast #.

John (Nevets) Nevets (nevets) | 1903 comments My understanding was she was adapting the "Fun Scale" to her enjoyment of reading books. This seems to most often be applied to outdoor activities, that might be a bit of work to accomplish.

Sort of a response to those that often ask, "Why would you put yourself though that?" And the response is, "Because it is fun." But you need to define that fun has different levels.

Here is a sketch that may help with the differences between the three.

And of course Veronica seems to have just adjusted that to reading, where a type 1 fun is a book she enjoyed while reading, and is glad at the end that she did it. A type 2 book seems to be one that was not necessarily enjoyable to read, but had a good overall reasons for being that way, so you are glad in the end that you finished it. A type 3 gets a bit more vague. My own example might be a hugely popular book that you didn't enjoy, and really didn't think it was worth reading at the end, but now you can be part of the conversation surrounding it.

I think this is how it goes. I may have the order slightly wrong.

Type 1 Book: You enjoyed it while reading it and on reflection.

Type 2 Book: You didn't enjoy it while reading it, but on reflection it was a good book.

Type 3 Book: You enjoyed reading it, but on reflection it was a bad book.

Type 4 Book: You didn't enjoy reading it at all.

Type 7 Book: You throw it across the room in disgust.

Type 8 Book: You throw it across the room in disgust, then instantly regret it, because it is on your expensive eReader. 😉

Type 9 Book: One you have on your bookshelf to impress guests. You know you'll never read it.

Type 10 Book: One that lives at the bottom of your TBR list. Every year it gets pushed further and further down.

Type 11 Book: A book you keep picking up and starting, but put down and forget for a few more years.

Type 12 Book: That sequel you are dying to read, but the author keeps delaying to the point that you know it is never coming. Unlike Winter 😜
