Treasure Hunt #4

Sea Organ
Zadar, Croatia
Latitude: 44.11769754779073
Longitude: 15.221539483059606

The city of Zadar was devastated during WWII and frantic reconstruction was undertaken to keep the sea front from overtaking the city. To solve the problem they built an unbroken concrete wall along the coast. In an effort to later redesign and update the city, architect Nikola Bašić came up with this wonderful treasure to turn the monotonous concrete wall into something beautiful.

The Zadar Sea Organ is an architectural sound art object and experimental musical instrument, which plays music by way of sea waves. Concealed under a set of marble steps, which both protect and invite, is a system of 35 polyethylene tubes and resonating cavity that transform the waves of the Adriatic Sea into wonderful harmonies. When the sea is turbulent, so too, is the music. When the sea is calm, the rolling motion of the waves creates a softer, gentler, yet haunting chant. There are even solar lights installed that collect energy during the day and then perform their "salute to the sun" at sunset and into the night. It's a one-of-a-kind treasure to experience. Check out this Youtube Video to hear its beautiful song: https://youtu.be/LBhk5KFwLVc?si=0TKLF...

The site opened to the public in April 2005 and has drawn tourists and locals alike. In 2006, the Sea Organ was awarded with the European Prize for Urban Public Space.
