This month's primary read is Blake Crouch's PINES.

Play nice, use spoilers, have fun.

Joanne Moyer (catwoman56) | 81 comments looking forward to seeing what everyone thinks of this one

a near by library has this so I may jump in for this read. I'm not sure yet. I'm still reading Carrie.

I'm not very far into it but so far I like it.

Katy Mann | 988 comments Adrian wrote: "Just started it too."

Love it. I already have this one, though I hadn't gotten too far into it.

Timothy Taylor (tim_taylor) | 56 comments I purchased this one last week and hope to start reading in a day or two.

Kimberly (kimberly_3238) | 7707 comments Mod
I'm up to book two, so I'll "lurk" around. :)

message 9: by Tom (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tom | 340 comments I read I and II also. Keep me posted cuz you will want to go on.

WendyB | 5016 comments Mod
Pines is one of the few books that I wish I didn't know what the storyline was so I could go back and read it all over again and be surprised like the first time. Loved it. When you're finished you'll want to pick up the next book in the series immediately.

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments I've started this one as an audiobook since I could get one cheap given that I already owned the ebook, and I knew I'd get to it much faster that way. Probably about 25% in, and I'm very intrigued - not really sure what's going on...

Jeremy Hurd-McKenney (jtcontinental) I've read about 80 pages. It took a full chapter for me to get my bearings, but now I'm sucked in to the story.

K.L. Phelps (kl_phelps) | 180 comments I think I have this on my Kindle, if I do I'll be joining in

Having fun with this one so far.

Who's who in this? Is anyone who they seem to be?

Timothy Taylor (tim_taylor) | 56 comments Read the first chapter before bed last night. I'm intrigued. I have a feeling this is going to be a fast and furious read.

Jeremy Hurd-McKenney (jtcontinental) Halfway through...loving it so far.

Joanne Moyer (catwoman56) | 81 comments I've read all 3 books and really liked them -- it will also be a tv show starting this May

K.L. Phelps (kl_phelps) | 180 comments only about 15% in but I'm liking it.

Katy Mann | 988 comments K.L. wrote: "only about 15% in but I'm liking it."
The suspense hooked me. I didn't really have my bearings in this one.

Timothy Taylor (tim_taylor) | 56 comments I'm a little over 30% in now and really enjoying it. Crouch slipped in a little twist that I was trying to get my head around. (view spoiler)

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments I think I'm a little over halfway through, and still really not sure what's going on, but I'm liking it! I'm not good at figuring these kinds of things out. Reading the book instead of listening might have been better, because I know I miss some things in audio, which may be crucial with this book, but it was either that or not have time to read this one at all, given the other reading I have lined up. :-)

I'm not good at figuring these things out either. I usually don't even try and just let the author take me where he/she wants to go. I'm the one who is always shocked that "the butler did it".

Tiffany King (tifking73) | 90 comments I'm going to start this as soon as I finish The Demonologist.

Timothy Taylor (tim_taylor) | 56 comments That's the same thought that I had at around 30% in Adrian. I just passed the half way mark and it is getting stranger by the minute. Definitely in a good way. But still trying to figure out what's going on. It really pulls you along to see just WTF is going on.

message 25: by Greg (new) - rated it 5 stars

Greg | 1 comments I read all three books. Great series and it will continue to pull you in. I must say I hope the TV series does it justice.

Jeremy Hurd-McKenney (jtcontinental) Finished it last night--I ripped right through this one. Overall a great, page-turning read, although I found some of the elements of the conclusion to be a little silly. It wasn't enough to ruin the experience, though, and Crouch pulled me back in at the end.

I'll definitely keep reading the series!

I read all 3 books, they are amazing! I cant wait to read all the comments, I had to revise the initial post, got too excited reading this while I was cooking haha.

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 43 comments I've just finished about 10 minutes ago. I won't write too much about it yet, but I did get a strong sense that this was like a Twilight Zone episode most of the way through.

When I read Crouch's inspiration for the book, I could see that too, but Twilight Zone stayed with me most of the way.

Timothy Taylor (tim_taylor) | 56 comments About 71% in and still trying to figure out just what is going on. Wish I could sit and finish, but we have big family plans this afternoon. It's a very exciting read.
Caleb, I can definitely see the Twilight Zone vibe.

Veronica (veraj121) | 15 comments I have this book on my Kindle. It was one of this Unlimited Reads ( Read for free). After finding out it will by on Fox and Terrence Howard was going portray one of the characters, I decided I will read this book this month. I will join in soon.

Nicole Sanchez (tarrish) | 8 comments I'm on book 2, and I thoroughly enjoyed book 1. I find these books exciting and fun. Can't wait to see what others think!

Vicki Willis This is one of the best books I have read this year! I was so glad there was another to continue the story. The story sucks you in and I could hardly put it down.

The only one I have left to read is the third...I found the second even more exciting than the first, believe it or not. :)

I'm so happy everyone is enjoying this book. I thought it was original and fun and frightening. Blake Crouch quickly became one of my fav authors because of this series.

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 43 comments There were aspects I didn't like. I thought Ethan himself was downright stupid at times. I wanted to scream at him when he made utterly crazy-stupid decisions.

Also, there was a slip in accuracy by the author that really annoyed me because it would have been so easily avoidable.

(view spoiler)

Crouch has written many novels, and I was starting to feel frustrated at what appeared to be plot flaws, but I kept with it and was very happy to see that what looked like discrepancies actually figured themselves out quite nicely - or at least nicely enough that I added another star to my rating.

The revelation was really interesting. I didn't know where the novel was going. I thought I was getting it, but in the end - nope. That was refreshing.

I would have thought all the steam was taken out of the story after the big reveal so I'm quite fascinated that people say that the second is even better. I already own it, so I'll need to schedule it in my TBR pile somewhere and find out if the story gets better.

Timothy Taylor (tim_taylor) | 56 comments I agree with everyone that this is a fun and exciting read. And at 86% complete, some of the mysteries are making some sense. Can't wait to see what happens down the stretch to see how Crouch pulls you along into the second and third books.

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 175 comments I was going to just read the first chapter but got sucked in and didn't stop until I was at 25%. I wanted to read this one before the TV show started rolling. Very interesting so far...

Latasha (latasha513) | 11974 comments Mod
does anyone have a lendable copy? I called the library today & it's still not there. I reserved it last week. it seems everyone is having a great time with this one and I'm eager to get started!

Cammy | 9 comments Loving this book so far. I'm going to try to get all my running around done so I can read.

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 175 comments I'm at 68% and this one really moves along. I can tell already I'll have to read the others eventually, I'm hooked.

Timothy Taylor (tim_taylor) | 56 comments Finished last night and really enjoyed this read. I shouldn't have let it sit on my TBR for so long.

The big reveal was interesting. Certainly not what I was expecting and sets up nicely for the next book in the series.

I want to read the next books and I will at some point. And I've read here that some say it's better than the first. But what made this one such a good read was the unknown and how I wanted to keep reading to find out. Now that I know more about what is going on, I'm not sure I'll enjoy it as much.

Don't worry about not enjoying the next two books in the series. There are plenty of surprises yet to come. Not everything was revealed in the first book.

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 175 comments Finished this one just now. WOW! I already had a hint of what to expect, but still a nice surprise ending. This is the best book I've read in a while, really enjoyed it. I'll be reading the rest of the series soon for sure.

Give me ghosts and monsters anytime, but this- the unknown- is scaring the crap out of me. I love it.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11974 comments Mod
I'm about 37% in & intrigued!! I definitely get the twilight zone feel but that's not a bad thing.

Thanks WendyB. That's good to hear.

Karie What a great book so far, fast paced. About 70% through it, I was up until 2am reading last night. I wanted to finish it so bad but my eyes would not stay open. Curious of how it's going to end.

message 49: by K.L. (new) - added it

K.L. Phelps (kl_phelps) | 180 comments I'm at 68% done. I'm definitely enjoying it, have a few theories of what might be happening, but I find parts of this book quite odd. Not in terms of the story itself, but in Crouch's writing style. As I've come to take my own writing career seriously, I noticed I read very differently than I had in the past, notice the language and style that other authors use. There is no doubt Crouch has his own style and I'd be curious to know if it was done intentionally to give the reading of the book a disconcerting feel to match the oddity of the story or if it just happens to be his own particular style. Either way I think it works well for this book.

On another note, does anyone know if the Fox mini series is going to based on the entire trilogy or just this first book?

WendyB | 5016 comments Mod
K.L., from what I've read it looks like the tv show will cover all three books. If this is true, it should be very fast paced.
