Read Runners discussion

Okay people.. I just started last night and am about .....*let me check*.... seven chapters into the story. Till now am finding it intriguing (which to me is nothing happening but the damn book is telling me that something will happen...which means that I have high hopes etc etc etc..) I just hope that today I can read a lot more. As of now.. it's like being tantalised with hope.. I just hope there is something delivered.

@Ani and @Deej, why do you guys say you hate her? Surely that's too strong a word for someone who is just commitment-phobic? Dont you guys feel just a little sorry for her even after reading Deoch's conversation with Kvothe in the very appropriately titled Chapter 69? And also after @Abhay's inputs?
I agree with Polo's viewpoint about her being elusive as the wind. And there is a reason I think Rothfuss made her that way and consciously compared her to the wind. The wind...from the moment Kvothe saw Abenty calling it, has become the symbol of his desire and the peak of his aspirations...that is why Denna (his 'moon dream' infatuation which fast ripens to something deeper) is likened to the wind. Plus she is skitty! IMO he likes her sometimes purely BECAUSE she is hard to get, in addition to his attraction for her and the double connection they have as musicians and people who live almost on the 'fringes' of society. Kvothe is a prodigally (is this a word?) intelligent man, a man for whom things are almost always too easy. No wonder he finds her flightiness a challenge.
And @Ani, she isn't stupid at all. Again, why do you say she is? She calls Kvothe's bluff several times, figures out a way to kill the dracchus before he does, and learns the Lay of Savien or whatever remarkably quickly.
Compared to Denna, I found the lovely and efficient Fela to be quite, I dunno...pale? Pheeka?
But yes, fave woman in the book Auri, no doubt. No wonder Rothfuss gave that special gal a book to herself. (hide spoiler)]

Sometimes when you really want to learn something, your mind captures all the details, howsoever small and big, consciously or subconsciously. Kvothe was obsessed with learning about summoning the wind. Also, He was a keen learner. We often come across such people who genuinely pursue a subject and understand it way better than the rest because of their keen interest.

And I think, Abenthy as a teacher had a big role to play in this. He made Kvothe use his logical thinking while teaching him sympathy. So that, added to his already sharp grey cells, helped in shaping up his knowledge practically. Also, the age at which he was tutored by Abenthy.. at such an age, one has pretty sharp grasping skills, so logically that helped.
Besides, getting into the University was the only conquest of his life. So his determination provided the fuel.

And about performing sympathy bindings in front of the class, he had a good hold over sympathy basics from Abenthy. Like I said, this man helped him in ways more than one. So that gave him a huge advantage. (hide spoiler)]

@Zaara my thoughts about kvothe are sealed inside a vault, for if they saw light of the day, there would be a storm.
And nobody is born genius.

Zaara - Here's what I think about the whole thing, lest I forget it again.
(view spoiler)[Bast and Reshi (Kvothe).. There must have been a time when they went on quests and fights, encountered perils and fought mightily. That sword with the words "Folly" imprinted upon it.. They sure have got some significance.

Bast has been with Kvothe since a long while, I suppose. Even before becoming an accomplice to the Innkeeper. He has seen Kvothe in the height of his power, and now when he looks at him, he fears that his Reshi is wasting away.. I wonder what made him give up his older life. It must have been something really grave.

Also he mentions about that memoir, which he never completed. Instead he went into one of his dark moods after having written it. Maybe the reasons why he left doing magic or playing music are too painful for him to pen down or recollect. When you're attached to something as Kvothe is to his lute strings and when you revere something so much like he does with sympathy, it must have been a terrible thing to lose them all. Gives me the shudders.

But thing is Chronicler is right in his own way too. When you write a story, you keep it original. And originality, when you are writing about a hero long lost in rumours, comes from mentioning the heroism as well as the downfalls.
I know what Bast intends is because he is attached to Kvothe emotionally. He wants his Reshi back. We can't blame him either. He just worships him, selflessly.

In my opinion, however, he did suffer.
(view spoiler)[ When he was kicked around like a street dog in Tarbean, he had lost all hope of reaching the University. He suffered mentally and physically. Still he held on. Here, its only because he was determined.

When he saw his parents perish in front of his eyes in that blue flame.. The entire troupe.. It was all that that he had.. the only thing he called his family. And the killers were right there in front of him. Yet he could do nothing, the pain got him numb to the bone. Think of a kid going through all that. Still he didn't give up. Despite of all his loneliness he trudged on.

He was a determined kid at many levels. And I love that about him. I think more than being perfect, that was what earned my respect. (hide spoiler)]

And whatever, I love him at the end of the day. :)

@Toppo, cool link...an erudite deconstruction and a heck of a good read...my soap bubble has burst...and yet my love for this book hasn't suffered too much.

I love the book but hate Kvothe.

(view spoiler)[ I like that concept of Denna being wind, but I just feel that Kvothe was so talented. Awesome with lute, in studies, fast learner and he was independent. He never begged for any help or assistance. And Denna, that mysterious girl just came and went (ok ok, like wind, I get it) but she came to him only when she was alone, in need of someone.... Kvothe always found her with a different boy all the time, and Kvothe just waited for her to come, searched her around.... she was nothing compared to Kvothe. She just had looks..... she really didn't deserve all the praise she got from Kvothe.... (hide spoiler)]

And she was with a different guy everytime, because she was looking for a patron. And guys like a girl, that doesn't mean the girl is mean or stupid.. She was charming, intelligent and she had a thing for music. Maybe guys flocked around her for that. She has a life of her own, she has burdens of her own.. maybe she doesn't want others to get too close to her for that. There are people like that in the real world, who come and go, because they like keeping things to themselves.

And she came to Kvothe because maybe in him, she found a friend. And maybe somewhere she liked him. We don't know yet of Denna's story, so its unfair to judge her just as yet...

I don't why she acts so mysterious, but I'm sure there's some reason. Denna was different from the rest. I love girls who are like that. Independent. (hide spoiler)]

No, I didn't pick a side... Because both were justified in their own ways.

surprisingly I agree with all points.

Manju (view spoiler)[ I don't think Kvothe was perfect. He had his own flaws. But yeah he had great memory and learning skill. He had learn a great deal under Abenthy's guidance. He was his real teacher. He went to university to hone his skills. Moreover, you might know the concept of photographic memory. In the start it is made clear that Kvothe has a photographic memory when he was talking to chronicler.

He could perform the binding just as the same way he called wind when he was Abenthy's pupil. The only difference was he was kid at that time so he made the mistake but later he immediately realized why he had suffered so much. (hide spoiler)]

@Abhay regarding Danna and Ambrose (view spoiler)[ Danna. She was a force. When she came she would bring everything with her but when she went, it would be like she left emptiness behind. Her burdens made her insecure and she couldn't trust anyone. I felt if we had her story as well. I might have ended up loving her more than I did Auri. Just a hunch. But. Danna was like a glass which is transparent from one side but opaque from another. One could see themselves in her if they really tried. She was the kind of person who never wanted to rely on anything or anyone. She couldn't depend. Maybe that's why she never stayed for long and vanished whenever she felt she was getting attached. This is my understanding of her. I might be wrong to think so. :) (hide spoiler)]
