Abercrombie spoiled us :P

Are you guys done with the part at The Eoalin? Your thoughts about it??
"
am in chapter 61.
I liked the Eolin part. the settings and how the singers were selected. Again I didn't like Kote and Denna, their perfection.:/

Absolutely right. Abercrombie, Kay, Butcher and Martin.;)

I still why Rothfuss made him this "perfect".
I don't think I will be able to like this character and he is very near to join Jorg, one of my most hated character. ;)

I also dislike kvothe for the same reason. His perfection rises to ridiculous levels in book 2

Take for example Fitz, even though he is the protagonist there are so many things he cannot do.
See Logen, despite his talent he is really bad at some things

Its going good. At about 75 % now.

I didn't see your post will check. :)

they are similar because they standing side by side in my most hated category.:P

& Kvothe still manages to earn four stars from you.:P

And I agree with Anirudh about Locke.
Hell none of other fantasy characters are this perfect.
As Anirudh pointed out that Locke is master of only one skill.
Vaelin excels only in one art and in others his friends are better than him.
Harry Dresden is one of the most flawed character I have read.
Crippled Glokta is not perfect.
But to me they all are better than "perfect" Kvothe.

money and Denna doesn't make a good nemesis.

Forget it all, if you like the book and enjoyed reading it then nothing else matters. A lot of people like it too, seeing the ratings.
I was just expecting something else from the book.
'It's our expectations that ruins things for us' read it somewhere.

& I don't have any problem with Kote having this many qualities. what I don't like is him being this perfect once he is in University and why not before that.
Locke excels in two things i.e. planning and execution, that's all. he sucks at every other thing.;P & Kote is much more loved character than Locke if you compare the ratings of both books.:P
P.S: Even Kaladin Stormblessed is not this perfect!:P

@Aarush, hi welcome to the discussion. Read your thoughts in Post 731. Did you have a favourite incident or scene in the book? A fave character?

Magic isn't prominent here. I absolutely loved Halikas's story, one of my favourite moments of the book.
I also liked the whole university system, the teachers, the interviews etc.
I don't like Denna.:/

@Aarush, I liked the musical and pastoral scenes best. They seemed to have 'something' more....perhaps more of a soul than the rest of the book. Of course, (view spoiler)

@Vimal, last lap now. Finish sooooooon :-) and then we can skip around and discuss the book freely. Yea it does get better once he gets out of the Uni mileu, doesn't it?

Oh no, I don't want to finish it soon :D This occurs with some books isn't it, especially the lengthy ones.Yeah there had been a lot of chapters in the univ Mileu so a change of scene was welcome.Biometric GPS, organic iron n all. This guy spins it like crazy.

@Abhay, Actually Kvothe uses such skills often if you remember. With the shoe maker, then at the whipping, then at exam. He uses trickery all the time.
It's not that there was no reason or explanation. It's that they just make him sound more supermanish. And no matter how you argue Locke is nothing like this. If you read book 2 you will understand more as to why I am complaining.
Kvothe is a master of ________ you can pretty much fill anything here. That's what irks me.
Locke relies heavily on his team to pull off a job. Whereas Kvothe is a one man army.
Did you read the blog Akshay gave a link to? It sums up the problem with Kvothe very clearly
The narration is very lyrical no doubt. That is why it has such a high rating.

I don't like denna either :D

They suit each other well.

They suit each other well."
What avatar?

What avatar?"
The one in which he is a relatively quiet inn keeper
I know he went out at night and battled with Scraels, but at least he didnot boast about it.

:) :) :)
But I like him much better that way.

Okay okay....we know you don't like her. :P
Why you don't like her?

well they were but at the same time they weren't. They were the reason kvothe's life changed, not the immediate problem.
The things kvothe had to tackle were different in this book. Mone..."
Yeah that is true. He is very self absorbed :/
Oh he learns quite a few things in book 2. You'll see :D:D

Exponentially :D

@Anirudh No, I don't wanna see. Ignorance is bliss, haven't you heard. :D

It is trickery. He spreads rumors about himself. Tricks the teachers into giving him access to school. Again tricks people by using herbs to not bleed thus building his own image.
I've already read book 2 hence I am discussing it. I have a cleared picture as to where Kvothe is headed because of it.
Not at all. I could tell you what he is a master of but then again you have only read one book and it would be spoiler. Safe to say he is a master of at least 5 to 6 different things.
I didn't say master of his fate anywhere in my argument. And I said he becomes a master. I didn't say he was on at the time of that incident.
You're missing the point. What I mean is Locke relies on others for many things irrespective of whether he is pulling a con or not. But Kvothe is often self sufficient.
Again, you have not at all explained anything of that nature. Yes he was hurt a couple of times. So? There are so many people who would get hurt like that and still struggle on. He does not miraculously become an expert swordsman or master kung fu specialist to fend off his attackers. He just survives them.
He is weak at fighting doesn't mean he will die because someone drowned him for a while.
If there is any inconsistency/repetitiveness and bias it is not from my side.

Thank you for understanding.

Yes, one can say he is self sufficient. What's the big deal in it. That's what this story is all about. A self sufficient man known as Kvothe and his story. I assume when we tell some tale we often tell it from our perspective and we become the focal point. Let us not fight over something as trivial as this. You hated him fine, you loved him fine. There are hell lot of better things to discuss than why he was perfect and why it was not a good thing. We all have our choices and preferences. Let's discuss anything other than his perfection.

Also, I don't recall giving out any spoilers. Spoiler is something that reveals something of importance. If I or Abhay say Locke got beat up that is not a spoiler since did not say why or by whom. For those who have not read the book that makes no sense anyway as they have no idea what Locke did.

Her actions were unlikable though.

As for the spoiler, exactly, like you said, those who have not read the book that makes no sense anyway as they have no idea what Locke did. ... consider you OWN idea and start the discussion which is suitable for everyone and not just Locke readers.

+1 to latter... her actions were indeed unlikable.
Am 61% done with this book and am still not on friendly terms with Kote and his perfection. May be its the effect of reading too much of Grimdark lately but I have read many great characters who are flawed and yet perfect at the same time.
(view spoiler)[Almost everyone who has replied to my question about Kote's memory said that his teacher was good, for once if I try to agree with all of you but am still unable to ignore that huge gap of three years which Kote spent in Tabrean in which he was totally cut off himself from his study.
Abhay said because Kote was eavesdropping on other students interviews so he was able to answer most of the question. Okay I can understand when Kote answered most of the repetitive questions, but what about other logical questions which were never asked before yet he was able to answer them with precision. I think no matter how sharp is the kid he needs to revise now and then.
And don't you all think its a bit over the top that a pick pocket who was living in shadows suddenly was so confident that he perform bindings in front of a full class with perfection, again. (hide spoiler)]
