I listened to it already. Am at the PC now. And its really a catchy piece of music. I liked the slow start which finally goes into almost a crescendo. Hopefully the book is like that too.

I really loved it. Was mesmerising, so much so that I just stopped reading and tried to listen to my kind of silence. I was alone in the room, near huge open windows and was able to appreciate the various teeny weeny sounds of nature, which put me into a sleepy kind of trance.

The way of writing there, in that particular paragraph, was very nice. It was quite deep and it made me realize that music of silence is also just as lovely as silence of music :) (hide spoiler)]

1) I think they are described beautifully. I liked the third one most which detectable only by paying attention.

2)I like this alien creature and the way it is described. Sure they are described to scare us and tell us you can't take them lightly. beside that people are unaware of them and what they can do making them a mysterious creature.

3)I must say I like their friendship more than this teacher-student relation. the way the look out for each other and care for each other is appreciable.

4)nothing is told in detail so far. but I am sure there going to be a patriotic tale behind them.

I really loved it. Was mesmerising, so much so that I just stopped reading and tried to listen to my kind of silence. I was alone in the room, near huge open windows and was able to appreciate the various teeny weeny sounds of nature, which put me into a sleepy kind of trance.
And I think it;s a prelude of things to come.The various silences and their disruptions may appear in the coming chapters too.

2. The description of a scael is very dark and scary. What do you think of the attacks associated with it?
Not sure as of now. These look like demonish creatures. Something out of scifi, actually. I am not sure whether they are under the control of a larger force or not.

3. What do you think of the relation between Kote and Bast as teacher and students and as two friends running an inn?

They seem more than teacher and student. Bast does reprimand Kote now and then. They work in symphony and seem to know each other well, present as well as their history. I am waiting further enlightment on their relationship.

4. “All the scars were smooth and silver, streaking him like lightning, like line of gentle remembering.”

Kote’s shown as a silent person always doing his work in the inn but his scars tell a different story. What do you think of this contrast between the two personalities and behavior?
He seems like a hero who doesn't advertise himself. Someone like an avenger who quietly fights against evil. And who is not known to the general public.

5. What do you think of the meeting between Kote and Chronicler and their different thoughts on demons?
It took time for me to recognize that the man by the fireside was Kote, despite the mention of his red hair. Chronicler too has some secret agenda. He doesn;t believe in demons according to the way he reacted when Kote said there was something evil beyond the fire. He was not well equipped to fight Scrael, which shows that he is not a fighter or a soldier, or perhaps he hasn;t encountered Scrael earlier.

They were members of a troupe and Kote is a mysterious innkeeper and is more than he seems to be. What do you think about the difference between Kote and his parents and his relation with them?
Based on these chapters, I feel that his parents were high born and not just ordinary gypsies or tinkers. Though I doubt whether they had any supernatural powers. Kote seemed to be an obedient son who was fond of his parents.

2. “I saw the Arcanist’s face change from anxious to pained to angry all in a second. I saw his mouth move.”
What are your thoughts about this mysterious Arcanist and the wind which came when he got angry?
He seems a genuine magician /sorcerer who is i disguise

3. Did you expect the Arcanist to be Abenthy, who was Kote’s first teacher?
yes. I guessed as soon as he summoned the wind

4. Do you like Kote as the narrator of his own story?
i am partial to first person narratives. We come to know exactly how the person feels and why he does certain things, provided that the narrator is not intentionally lying to us.

Here are my answers.
Prologue to Chapter 5

1.What do you think of ‘A Silence of Three Parts’? The way three different silences are described?
Well, it’s a lovely, lyrical and punchy beginning, isn’t it? I really liked reading everyone’s thoughts on this bit – the three kinds of silences, esp Deej and Smith’s posts. Me, I take things apart and put them together again as I read, so I read for word choice, scene construction etc. Over here, the effect is one of layering…the silence without (effect of world/scene conditions), within (as action/lack of action by the actors in the scene), and because of (causal/emotional – born of protag himself). And I thought it clever, to introduce a scene using a sense other than sight (since reading is mostly a visual experience) but all good writers ensure they involve other senses as well. Scene setting using the aural sense gave it power. The lyrical nature of the verse gave it depth. Together, it’s a beginning to remember. My answer isn’t pretty like Smith’s or Deej’s…cuz I went all technical. But yes, a silence of cause, a silence of effect and a silence of deed (or lack of it) = awesome layering. There was a similar layering scene written at the beginning of Chapter 7, using light instead of sound. Its very lovely too. And I’ve highlighted both.

The book is just starting, na? I feel…they.will.be.back. Bwaaaahaaahaa, we sure haven’t seen the last of them!

3. What do you think of the relation between Kote and Bast as teacher and students and as two friends running an inn?
They have powerful shared history. And they are friends of the heart.

He’s hiding from his old life, he wants to leave it all behind, but we are told this explicitly when he gets angry with Chronicler for finding him.

5. What do you think of the meeting between Kote and Chronicler and their different thoughts on demons?
Kote, he’s obviously dealt with them before. And Chronicler hasn’t. Ha. This scene (and again, I’m sorry that I read books in this fashion) is a setting up scene. They have to meet (and in a dramatic way which Kote can’t wriggle out of) or else the book just stops, doesn’t it?

They seem wonderful and loving parents, unusual ones too. Its too early to tell about any difference between Kote the child and his parents? He is an unusually observant child.

Well, here he is, Kvothe’s first window to the world of magic. And he is welcome.

Yes. I did. I didnt expect him to be in such dire straits though, I expected someone wise and powerful (a Dumbledore or Gandalf figure) but then this is obviously a force to be reckoned with, albeit fallen on hard times. I expect the student will outstrip the teacher fairly soon?????

4. Do you like Kote as the narrator of his own story?
So far, yes, very much. Although I also do like the omniscient narrator scenes. I hope they alternate. I love such transitions. When I finish the book, I will go back and see whether I liked this lens/worldview best. And whether/how it could have been done differently. Once again, a question that astonishes me with the depth of insight that this questioner brings to the table. Kudos, Deej! I doff my hat. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Chronicler didn't believe in demons, even when Kote told him that they were real. But, on the other hand, he believed in the tales and legends of Kote even when Kote told that he (Kvothe)is a myth and he is again and again trying to convince him.... Like this very quote...

Why do you think, Chronicler has two different thoughts upon History and Legends???
