@Vimal Maybe lack of action is the reason we are finding book's pace slow. So much build up but no action as of yet. I hope its get better soon.

And Maybe you are a teacher at heart and liking the way kote learned so many diverse things, and the teacher-student relationship too.

I think people used to grim darks would find it a bit slow maybe :)

He has earned the silver lute or something and finally found an inn where the keeper is not intimidated by Ambrose. Denna is not a very powerful character, as many others commented in this thread previously. And I am not enamored of Kvothe, as I am finding him a bit more self assured than needed. But still, likeable.

As of now Lorren is still angry with Kvothe for the candle in archives incident, but I feel he is slowly melting as Kvothe has just said he will do anything is required for the ban to be taken back. Have to read further and see.
So far I think Lorren is fair, but a tad too strict.

I have stopped this one for now and concentrating on Troy which has more straight forward language. Willl come back to Kvothe by Monday.

See, when someone writes music, I say music not song. Song are the lyrics, I say music 'cuz that is the tune. They mostly write things which they can't express in words.... happens with everyone, that something is so precious, that we think words are not enough for it.... that's what happened with Kvothe.

All he had with him was Ben's book, dad's lute and mom's memories... in that forest alone, trying to survive, these things were most precious to him.... mere words would be insult to them.... that's why he explained Ben's teachings, Dad's songs and his mom's smile through his songs.... lute....
And as for the cool breeze and sun setting and leaf turning by wind (my fav) it was his only home now he lived there hunted there and slept there... and nature is so beautiful that she has her own songs, so words would be an insult to explain kvothe's surroundings.....

There is a song, River Flows in You by Yiruma.... of course name is metaphorical as river is taken as life or heart or happiness which is always left with a girl considering a lover, but if you will hear that song, you will see it is pleasant.... some times, the song is fast.... that's when the lover is away from the girl, that's when river is unhappy, moving fast..... and sometimes, the song is slow.... when the lover is with his girl, the river is happy, moving slow with pleasure enjoying every moment.....

In the end, I had say that these are just my thoughts.... someone else might have different, but this is the way I'll frame it ^_^

Discussion Points: ch 21 to 26

1. What do you think of Trapis and all of his help to orphan kids?
Trapis seems a kindly person, a good Samaritan, who has sacrificed his life for the sake of needy and sick orphans. Nothing about his past has been mentioned. When I read about him I thought he will play an important role in the future.
2. Do you think Kvothe should live with Trapis under protectiom and not alone under that roof?
If it were me, I would certainly have. But Kvothe had other plans. His main aim was studying in the University and proceeding from there. He also wanted to go in search of his parents' killers. If he had stayed with Tropis, he would have got shelter and security, but future would have not benefited.
3. What do you think of Tarbean and its people?
Tarbean seems a rough, humongous, busy place like the modern day metro, where most people are self centered, be it the rich or the poor. It didnot take to newcomers well. People had to beg or steal to survive. The rich and poor quarters were deeply segregated. And it was essentially survival of the fittest there.
4. What do you think of Encanis and Tehlu?
Am not very sure, But Encanis seems to be something like the Halloween demon, or any other folklore demon which is naughty and mischief making. Tehlu is the powerful God those people worship, or that is what I think. Because they always take the name of Tehlu, in situations which necessitate 'Oh my God' exclamations.

Skarpi the storyteller was the one who told Kvothe about the story of Lanre, which no one else knew or cared to tell out loud.
I went back and read
Too much truth confuses the fact
too much honesty makes you sound insincere...
He also made it seem as Lanre and Haliax were the same.
And I remember Chronicler telling in the beginning that it was Skarpi who send him to the inn in search of Kvothe.

2. What to you think of Lanre's story?
Lanre is initially introduced as a Prince who sold his soul to be powerful. Then Skarpi tells in detail the story of Lanre and his wife Lyra, who fought side by side to protect the seven kingdoms, Lanre is dead trying to protect but comes to life because of his wife's prayers/laments. Then Lyra dies and Lanre never recovers, and thinks himself responsible. He thinks all humans are corrupt and deceitful and does nothing to save them anymore from the dark forces.He becomes the dark force, Haliax. He just wanted the earth to be destroyed.

3. Do you like these stories of Lanre & Selitos and Tehlu & Encanis in Kvothe's narration of his own story?
Yes, mythology within fantasy is an interesting thing to listen to. Great imagination.

4. Do you think Kvothe should not have risked his copy of Rhetoric and Logic for 2 talents, after all it was the only thing he had from his happy past
He should not have risked. He had become a street child learning to pick pocket and steal. I don't think he needed to risk his copy for 2 talents. He could very well have stolen. Of course, I am limited by my inability to understand exactly how much is 2 talents, is it thousands or lakhs or crores. If it is lakhs, I agree it is difficult to pickpocket.
But Kvothe had to be portrayed as a daredevil who liked to take risks.

1. What do you think about the way sympathy, or any other forms of magic has been described in the book? So far, the way Abenthy describes it to Kvothe, I mean? The way Rothfuss talks about them- doesn't it feel uncanningly real? Like these things could actually occur but you are surprised that they don't happen in reality?
I like books where the magic system isn’t too complex and kept as close to true life as possible…requires less mental heuristics on the part of the reader to get on top of it. Which is why, I found the chapter in Mistborn about all the Pushing and Pulling (plus those annoying capitals in the middle of the sentence too) rather irritating. Also having to learn about which metal does what and its twin and its opposite or whatever. I spent time instead wondering whether Sanderson had a chart taped to a wall in his workspace or whether he made an Excel sheet to keep track of it all. So, net effect was it took me AWAY from the story instead of into it. In summary, prefer low magic/ magic that is intuitively grasped and as close to natural forces (well, forces of nature that humans understand). But I’m rather a capricious reader…strangely, I felt the opposite about Elantris and Hogwarts (and Quidditch). But I think I’ll need a separate thread to discuss those books and my BIG love for them.

2. What do you think of Abenthy as a teacher and Kvothe as a learner?
I liked that Abenty doesn’t talk down to Kvothe. And for him, its the first time he actually has an intellectual equal to talk to…to flex his mental muscles with. The troupe didn’t even recognize his genius, his parents did, but only in an offhand way, as a fact of life. Abenty was the one who encouraged him to DO something about it. I like that their teaching and learning was so broad-based. And I liked that they parted when they did…the best teachers show you the way and leave you to walk it yourself. (hide spoiler)]

Well...our man Rothfuss has dabbled in human psychology, hasnt he? Bound to seep thru his writing...and his creation of a magic system that involves splitting the mind into various compartments and having each one do different things.
Not gonna waste words saying this bit and the bit about the heart of stone is good writing and how...
The popular myth that humans use only a miniscule proportion of their brains...an abysmally small percentage, somewhere like 10% or something...has been worked with here...but it does dovetail with a large proportion of ancient wisdom traditions that talk about altered levels of consciousness (Thuriya) or focused awareness (alpha) or whatever.
But yes, good solid common sense writing. Minds do hibernate as well as bodies. And for an orphaned twelve year old thrown on the world in such an abrupt manner, an interval of descent into almost bestiality is not only expected, it is inevitable. Poverty isn't pretty. And when you are hungry, all the beautiful thoughts in the world are twisted into ugly shapes.
Sorry if this isn't a more relevant answer to the particular section. More than the four doors (which to me seemed more like a rubric/taxonomy to pin events across the novel's timeline), I liked the bit that followed. The part about the music about playing the lute in the forest...which Deej and I have already discussed. (hide spoiler)]

I understand what you mean with the magic thing. Many prefer magical worlds which are more relatable and easy to form in your head, as compared to more complex concepts.
I guess it varies from person to person. I, for one, love magic in whatsoever form is encased and presented to me. Be it spells, potions, Soulcasting, Sympathy, Arcany- I won't ever say no to it. :P

But I love the magic in this book. Tts simple but weirdly logical.

And about Abenthy, I totally agree with you. He didn't spoonfeed Kvothe. He laid his theories only after having the latter try to undo the puzzle. And I like the last thing you said, "The best teachers show you the way and leave you to walk it yourself." That's true because most lessons of life are learnt as you traverse the rough road on your own. (hide spoiler)]
