And yea, Ambrose....well, he deserves a swift one in the place where the sun don't shine...and I would wear boots while delivering it....
You know, I dunno why everyone finds the story so slow and the parts at the Uni lack pace etc...I'm loving it actually, the dip into day to day details of surviving at Uni...and how different it is for privileged kids like Ambrose (and Malfoy) vs. the experience that kids like Kvothe (and Ron) have. It's the same Uni but it's like two different worlds. and I'm actually liking the struggle Kvothe has to pay his fees each quarter...I mean yea, there aren't battles, bangs or flashes happening all the time, but it is still a journey, still a struggle, still a life lived in small pieces...term to term...

Sympathy was an interesting concept. I liked it. Different from what we usually encounter.

The Superman theory doesn't fly with me...it's not Kvothe's fault,that's how his creator made him and it's the essence of who he is...why, it would be like hating Salman Khan for being Dabangg...now don't tell me you preferred him in the days when he was the goody good boy Prem 'Barjatya' (ahem)....come on, Unk..,most of his films then flopped because he wasn't being true to his authentic self...or playing roles that were anyway. Look how that's changed...
Similarly, Kvothe is created as a super smart and (because of it) somewhat cocky dude. He can't run counter to character and suddenly become a modest dimbulb, na? Readers would never buy it...
And Ani I'm fully expecting some creepy and serious reply that you don't watch Bollywood movies etc...

I actually felt something of an opposite...he was awesome in book 1 but in book 2 he was so watered down...he seemed to have lost all his Lockeness...I mean, hollow chairs...pathetic! And in the end, he left with the wrong/fake set of paintings, come on Locke G***du, kya kar rahe ho?
But yea in book 1 he was totally Rajnikanth...

@Gehna, machi literally translates to brother-in-law but nobody uses the word in that context anymore.We(ppl in TN irrespective of their tongue) use it to denote a close friend.The thing is the viceversa is also true.A friend who gets close enough gets called machi, and a recent friend who gets called machi gradually becomes a close friend.

I too enjoyed the narration of sympathy in the book so far,but to me it served the purpose of reminding some earlier reads under a new label.I haven't read much fantasy in English before so can't comment quoting any english book, but sympathy is quite a common concept in regional literature, in books dealing with black magic/witchcraft etc. Especially the double-binding stuff that Kvothe does to master Hemme. There are also variations like first you meditate, focus your mind and reach a spirit and the spirit will do the binding for you provided you have some hair or nail of the target.

@Gehna, I dunno wat each person's tongue is but since you mentioned yours is telugu, you must've heard about Endamoori Veerendranath's novel ThulasiDalam(it was made into a movie too).Theres a whole lot of sympathy there.He'd done a decent job of mixing science and black magic.I read it when I was a kid and it kinda haunted me for quite sometime. You could try it if you get a chance.

I'm at about 50 % of the book, and superman Kvothe hasn't reached any repulsive proportions to me yet, especially considering what he had to go through in Tarbeen.

1. His sooper-dooper memory - After 3 years of all he had gone through in Tarbeen,the way he aced the interview was a bit too much considering the variety of subjects. He'd eavesdropped, but still.Rothfuss could've atleast set it up like he had been rehearsing the stuff intermittently in his mind during nights those 3 years.
2.The going on the horns scene - Just for telling the panel that Hemme had given him permission, Why he had to invoke heart of stone n all and glorify the scene is beyond me.

He is much more than he shows himself to be. And years of dealing with a subject as complex as his has made him act the way he does. Especially the point where he makes Kvothe jump off the roof, I thought there's something he wanted to teach Kvothe Abenthy-style. But then he just chuckled and went away. I was laughing and shaking my head the whole time. Such a goon! XD
But I realised his true worth when in the end he quietened Kvothe after that bash with Ambrose, where Kvothe summoned the wind. That was incredible. (hide spoiler)]

I am not generous about my ratings. I have read books only after going through various reviews. I was picky about books, But nowadays I am changing my reading habits.
