The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King
Well, it worked out for the best that the first book I chose for this task ended up not fulfilling it! After looking at Rosemary’s suggestions in the task thread, I realized this book was on my TBR list!
I always feel it could go either way with another author ‘continuing the story’ of iconic characters. Luckily, King made the very good choice of moving Holmes to ‘retirement’ in the country. Of course, you have to suspend disbelief a little especially if you are a fan of the original stories. I’m not sure if Holmes, in his London heyday (as written by Conan Doyle) would be open to befriending/tutoring/mentoring a strong-willed teen-age girl – however it works here. Mary Russel is a very strong character in her own right, and I think this ‘origin’ story (for the series) is very well done. We get to know Mary, her background and motivations; and we get to see her relationship with Holmes evolve. I also particularly enjoyed Watson appearing as ‘Uncle John”. I need another series like another hole in the head, but I definitely would like to continue with this one. 4*

Review:
The first book of 2. This one begins the tale of Bran and Meliara (Mel), two young country royals, who, after the death of their father. pick up his fight to bring the throne down.
All in all it was a cute, short story. It was very light on fantasy and the romance still is in the first stages, so no sign of that either, though obvious to any reader it is headed in that direction, Mel is a very head-strong character, I really did not like her all that much. Bran, for me anyway, was "eh, what a woos". Towards the end he found his footing, he could develop well in book #2. Am I going to read that? Chances are good if I can get it in time to use for another challenge. No anticipation that it will rate any higher than this book though.

The Word is Queen
The Strangled Queen
Review:
The second book in the series centered on the Capet line of Kings, in medieval France. This second book begins just after the death of Philip The Fair. His son Louis is crowned and left with a Kingdom in debt, an unfaithful, imprisoned wife and an empty Papacy crown.
With the old King dead, his brother Charles, Count of Valois, accelerates his opportunity to oust his rival for royal control sees to fall of Enguerrand Marigny .
George R. R, Martin calls this series "The Original Game of Thrones" and I heartily agree. This is not a series for anyone who abhors the atrocities of the Medieval Age. Druon writes in explicit detail, not only of the gore, and accepted torture but of the conditions of life in the lower classes of people.

The Cat Who Wasn't There by Lilian Jackson Braun
I’ve owned this book since 1995 (according to the price sticker on the back!), and have read it many times. This series is a ‘go to’ when I want something light and not terribly written (although they are not all equal in the series). It is a true ‘cozy’ (ie. cats, a mystery, and no in your face blood and guts). I’m in the midst of reading ‘Literature’ for another task which is a bit of a slog, so this was to break it up.
In this instalment, Qwilleran and some of the regular characters from Moose County take a guided trip to Scotland where the mystery starts. They come home and the mystery builds to it’s conclusion. This could easily be read as a stand alone, but if you are following the series along you know something is going to happen. Probably a murder. More than one something happens, but Koko is on the case – nudging Qwill in the right direction. I like that many (if not most) of the characters have some life lived under their belt, the women are smart and often independent, and there is no hint of ‘twee’ in these cozies. 4*

Let Us Now Praise Famous Men by James Agee and Walker Evans
In 1936, James Agee was sent to Alabama by Fortune magazine to write a story about the plight of tenant farmers during the Great Depression. His friend, photographer Walker Evans, traveled with him to photograph three families of impoverished tenant farmers in a rural area. The magazine article was not published, but the material was turned into a book in 1941.
"Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" opens with sixty-two of Evan's stark black and white photographs in unnumbered pages. Evans documents their gaunt, weary faces, their ragged clothing, and their rundown shelters. There is a feeling of strength and resilience in the eyes of the tenant families who are portrayed with dignity.
James Agee, who was also a poet, wrote the text of the book in several styles. There are beautiful lyrical passages, journalistic descriptions, and stream of consciousness chapters where he often goes off topic. Agee was quite experimental and creative in his presentation with some parts of the book working better than others.
In addition to writing about the tenant farmers, Agee also wrote about how the experience was making him feel. He struggled with the fact that he and Evans were spying on and possibly exploiting these tenant families for their own personal gain. It may have been good journalism, but Agee was revealing the intimate details of their lives to the general public.
The tenant farmer has no land, no house, and sometimes lacks a mule and farming implements. The landlord gives him these in return for his share of cotton and corn. The tenant farmer will also owe the landlord for seed, fertilizer, and ration money that was advanced during the four months of March through June. The ration money usually runs out before the new crops are harvested so they go through some lean, hungry times unless they can find supplemental work at the sawmill or other employment. "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" is an important work documenting both the 1930s and the struggle of the tenant families.

Burma Sahib by Paul Theroux
Paul Theroux is perhaps my favorite travel writer... and I have also read a fair number of his novels... which, frankly, aren't as excellent. This is one of his better ones...but I still have quibbles. This novel is a fictionalized account of George Orwell...before he was George Orwell. He was Eric Blair, a young probationary policeman for the Raj stationed in Burma. He's not really into his job... and he's embarrassed by his English family who live in Burma and have married with Burmese. He is a misfit...and that status has some serious circumstances.... which include being bounced around to several outposts...some with colossal failures. Theroux does a good job exposing some of the seeds of Orwell's future works.... although this is not obvious if the reader is not aware of Orwell's writings. My biggest quibble is the amount of repetition...especially all the reminders that Orwell was embarrassed by his father's status as an opium officer for the British 4th Class.

The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play by Neil A. Fiore
I have always struggled with procrastination... and in most cases I was able to deal with it somewhat successfully. But there were always issues...and I always knew I could do a better job if I did not delay working on my tasks(s). Ironically, this book teaches the reader that one of the causes of procrastination is perfectionism. Procrastinators fear that whatever they do will not be good enough...so, they put it off. There are several strategies discussed... but the one I came away with primarily is that one should try to break any task into small pieces if possible. I have been doing this prior to reading the book.... it can still be frustrating.... taking longer to complete things than other people...but, it works...most of the time, for me. There are also many examples provided that don't really apply to me any longer because the advice is for people who are still working...and I am very happily retired.

Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-reum
Review
Mention a bookshop and I get all tingly inside. I'm sure a lot of you do too. While it would be a dream to spend my day in a bookshop, I know I'm not one to open & run one as a business. However, it was good reading about someone's achieving their dream of owning a bookshop.
The novel was a very easy read in terms of language and content. It was a very warm slice of life. These are normal people living. They are sad. They are happy. They are in between. They interact with each and they learn from each other. There was a lot of learning done (sometimes it felt a bit much and a bit too pointed) and a lot of nodding from me. I did find though that the jumps between perspectives and times (always forward but you just don't know how much exactly) made the story feel disjointed to me. All in all, I'd say that it's actually a very good novel but not one for me; or at least, not one for me right at this moment. It is in the back of my mind to revisit one day; I don't know when that right time will be but we'll see.

The Girl at Central by Geraldine Bonner
An early mystery narrated by a telephone operator who listens in on a call and as a result gets involved in a murder investigation. She is not really a detective but rather is peripherally involved with the case.
The premise is interesting but the narrative is somewhat difficult to follow and there isn’t enough action to engage the reader. What is interesting is the description of the life of a 1914 working woman in a relatvely small town in New Jersey. There is also some light shed on the different social classes in a relatively rural town.
As might be expected the mystery leads to a romance and a happily ever after ending. The murder is solved — rather creatively but not in a way that you will figure out. Fair warning — there is casually racist language sprinkled through the text.

The Information by Martin Amis
Richard Tull is an unsuccessful novelist whose latest work, called Untitled, seems to bring all readers out in hives or worse. He makes his living by writing book reviews and preparing books for publication at one of those 'vanity' publishers that used to charge people hundreds of pounds to publish their memoirs or whatever before print-on-demand was invented to make it free. But the main aim of his life is to bring down his old friend Gwyn Barry who has suddenly written a huge bestseller of (according to Richard) no literary merit.
This book has Amis's usual misogynistic characters plus some racial stereotypes, but some of Richard's calamities and the characters' observations do manage to be cruelly apt and/or funny. My ratings of Martin Amis's books range from 1 star to 5, and this one scraped a 3.

The Last Judgement by Iain Pears
Before Iain Pears became famous for writing such novels as An Instance of the Fingerpost, he wrote and published an Art History Mystery series of which this is the 4th installment. Pears' degree is in Art History and I believe he has also published non fiction in the genre. In any case, I stumbled on this series a few years back and was hooked. My challenge group has been very kind in constructing reading tasks that allow me to incorporate them.
This one opens with Jonathan Argyll visiting one of his art dealer friends in Paris. Delorme has a painting that needs to be delivered to Rome. Jonathan makes a deal about Delorme sending some drawings to California in exchange for Jonathan taking the painting to Rome, which he does. While waiting for the train in Paris, a fellow tries to steal the painting. What the heck? Jonathan manages to chase down the thief and recover the painting. When he gets home to Rome, he tells his story to Flavia, his girlfriend.
Flavia works for the Art Theft Department of the police and is a very good investigator. Flavia's antenna goes up when she hears Jonathan's story and is certain something is wrong about everything. A couple of murders later and the reader is treated to a good thriller.
I have been reading this series in order though I think any of the installments stand on their own. The one caveat is that the relationship between Jonathan and Flavia matures with subsequent installments. This probably wouldn't affect the enjoyment of any one novel. For me, the series is enhanced with the romantic involvement of the two of them. Note! This series is NOT a romance, but a true mystery series. The banter between them, however, provides light comedy interludes which I appreciate.
There has been enough time between my readings to prevent me from saying whether or not this is the best so far. But it is very good and I'm very happy to give it a full 4-stars.

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
I've been reading some heavy books lately, thought I could do with something a little lighter. This one wasn't on my radar at all--for the Kindle seasonal challenge, the newest task was to read the first book in a series and this was one of the listed "recommended" books, I needed something to fill 10.2, et voila.
I couldn't put this down. I knew NOTHING about it when I borrowed it, other than it was ostensibly about a "housemaid"...the way this psychological thriller unfolds is pitch-perfect and I was definitely glad I took that ride. It was total beach-read material--all plot--but what a compelling plot. I've already borrowed the second in the series.

The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann
This is a great read! A story of mutiny, shipwreak and survival that has been pieced together by the author into a book that is difficult toput down. Gann manages to describe the situation and the personalities and motivations of the characters in a plausible manner despite having only primary sources that were designed to present and defend specific viewpoints.
In turn, the reader can identify with many of the different characters and wonder how they would have acted and reacted if placed in that circumstance. Lots of information about Royal Navy sailing ships and their use in battle presented in a readable manner. Nothing about the narrative makes these voyages seem like romantic cruises.
This book deserves all of the positive reviews it received.

Dressed for Death by Donna Leon
In instalment 3 of this series, we are in Venice in the height of summer. Boy, does it sound unpleasant. I’ve really enjoyed how evocatively Leon writes about Venice – warts and all. It doesn’t sound like a place you would want to visit in August!
Brunetti is brought in to investigate a murder that, given the time (early 1990s) and place, may make sense (even if it is wrong). However, it is all smoke and mirrors and in the end it is a tricky conspiracy. That seems to be a common theme in the last couple of these Inspector Brunetti stories. The mystery is good and complex. I also enjoy Brunetti as a character – he is thoughtful and empathetic; and he has a really nice relationship with his wife (who is also a great character). (He is kind of the opposite of the complicated/tortured Nordic noir detective!) 4*
