I recently realized that I had never read the entire set of books in the Chronicles of Narnia. I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe years ago, and recently tried The Horse and His Boy, which I understood could be read as a standalone (it was). I liked it enough to try another in the series.

This is the second book in the order of publication. The four Pevensie children are back for another adventure in Narnia. One year has passed back in England, but thousands of years have passed in Narnia. The rightful King (the titular Prince Caspian) is in danger and needs help to claim the crown from the currently reigning usurper.

I really enjoy these old-fashioned adventure stories in the form of a quest. It is well-paced, and full of predicaments, which create curiosity as to how the protagonists will get out of the fix. It is a children's story that can appeal to all ages. Near the end, there are a few very touching scenes. I got carried away with the flow and ended up fully enjoying it.

Robin P | 5762 comments I loved this series as a child. There was very little fantasy available then except for traditional fairy tales and The Hobbit. When I found out later that this series is designed as a Christian allegory, I felt annoyed that just writing a great series wasn't enough for the author. However, even later in life, I learned that the basic stories are way older than Christianity. For instance a god who sacrifices himself and is reborn existed in Greek and other ancient myths. So then I felt better about it again. Some people are also bothered these days about how the girls get a subordinate role, but that seemed normal to me in the 1960's, so I didn't really notice it.

Joy D | 10114 comments l almost commented on the Christian allegory but decided against it since it can easily be appreciated as a fantasy adventure. In this one, Lucy has a prominent role. She is the only one who can see the correct path and everyone else ignores her but she is vindicated in the end
