Yeah I wouldn’t be so sad about not being able to get those except that I can’t for the life of me find another matching set of all four of those that isn’t some super modern contemporary look. I’d be super happy with something different if I could find a set of them with a classic look.

There’s Little Women, Good Wives (which I think overlaps a little with Little Women), Little Men, and Jo’s Boys.

Ok so I was actually just checking, good wives is essentially part two of little women and is most often published with it now (it’s all just published as Little Women). So guess it’s only 3 books. Depends on which edition probably. I think good wives is just the half of the book after the girls get married and all.

That one is my favorite of the whole series. Lol. Or at least tied with Little Women.

Have you read Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom? (They’re both by Alcott)

message 459: by ✧Bella✧ (last edited Apr 13, 2024 03:58PM) (new)

✧Bella✧ | 6756 comments Jo's Boys made me so angry. Like what the heck is the point the author is trying to make?
I have read Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom, I liked the second one better, although neither is my favorite. Not the biggest fan of some things that happened. Alcott isn't really my fave anymore, anyway, though, (I think she gets too preachy, and I don't even always agree with the point she's trying to make, see Jo's Boys) and I just never found any of her books to compare to Little Women.

What didn’t you like about Jo’s boys and the Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom series? (I personally LOVE Rose in Bloom.) Alcott is a favorite of mine. Lol.

Have you read An Old-Fashioned Girl? That’s another one I love.

I’m with you there Shekinah.

message 464: by ✧Bella✧ (new)

✧Bella✧ | 6756 comments Alright, so I could spend a very long time discussing my problem with Jo's Boys, but since you know the story I don't have to explain it. Dan's storyline. (view spoiler)

As for Eight Cousins, it just wasn't my thing, and maybe I found it a little too preachy at times. Rose and Bloom was better, and I actually used to love it, but again I thought it got a little too preachy (but that just seems to Alcottt's style) and I would have preferred if (view spoiler)

When I was like 14, 15, and possibly even 16, I did love them all, and it's not that I completely dislike them so much as they're not really my favorite anymore, and I have some issues. Or at least, I had a very big issue with Jo's Boys, which I spoke of in my previous post.

I did read An Old-Fashioned Girl a few times, and liked it, although it has been a few years.

Ok Dan’s storyline did make me cry. But I don’t recall it being a matter of “he was bad” as much as “he was wild” which is why his love story didn’t work out.

And yeah what happened in Rose in Bloom did make me sad. (view spoiler)

Bella if you don’t mind my asking, how old are you? Also how many siblings do you have (you mentioned being from a big family)?

message 469: by ✧Bella✧ (last edited Apr 13, 2024 04:23PM) (new)

✧Bella✧ | 6756 comments Yeah, I get that it was a matter of "he was wild" but... what he did was in self-defense, so I don't think it was even proof of that. Plus, just because his love story didn't work out, the author needn't basically tell us that no good woman would ever want to be with him. Smh.

As for Rose in Bloom, it just made me wonder, if Alcott didn't know how to have (view spoiler)

I'm 19, and the oldest of six. I have four sisters and a brother.

Ellie Ann | 78 comments I can see how you’d have that problem with Jo’s Boys. I didn’t really, but the book itself wasn’t my favorite the last time I read it. It fell weirdly flat for an Alcott book. But it hadn’t the other time or two before 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just finished eight cousins a few days ago! And I’ve read an old fashioned girl, too😁 I bought the LM Alcott Hidden Gems collection, so I’ll be working my way thru the rest of that soon

Yeah, Dan's storyline and the way Alcott handled it just made me really mad.

Yeah that makes sense. Now that you mention it I can’t think of any major redemption arcs in her books. (Tom in An Old-Fashioned girl was a little bit of one but that was more a case of just growing up.)

😬😬 Sorry Shekinah. We’ll leave.

Nice. I’m almost 16 and the oldest of 9 (4 brothers and 4 sisters plus another baby on the way)

Dan was one of my favorite characters so I hated what she did with that. But I still loved the book.

✧Bella✧ | 6756 comments Yeah, Dan was one of my favorites too.

And it's cool that you have so many siblings. I don't know any families bigger than mine.

Alright, Shekinah, I'm leaving now. :)
