Laura | 5 comments Good people of the sword and laser I need your help! I've recently acquired two baby guinea pigs and have been racking my brain for good names for them. I love pet names that are fantasy or scifi references but I haven't thought of any that are suiting yet. Does anyone have any good suggestions of names they've come across while reading and thought might make good pet names? I'd also love to hear if anyone else has pets named after characters from books.

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5196 comments On the assumption that they are from the same litter (fraternal twins,) Luke and Leia might be good.

Others:
Castor and Pollux
Apollo and Athena
Lessa and F'lar
Bender and Fry

Trike | 11203 comments Bamf and Pillar of Autumn.

Try 'em out for a couple days. You'll see.

You're welcome.

I've gone for names based on appearance.

Chewie & Lumpy (For Star Wars nerds)
Trouble & Tribble (For Star Trek nerds) Alt spelling (Trobble & Tribble)

Isaac (Newton)
Higgs (Bosun)
Bucky (Balls)
Quark (particle)

Leesa (leesalogic) | 675 comments We also had foster cats that were named Apollo, Athena, Artemis and... Big Fuzzy. None of the other god names really seemed to fit.

We adopted Athena and Big Fuzzy :)

Micah (onemorebaker) | 1071 comments We have a cat named Rosalyn from BSG. The dog has a non nerdy name but every animal from here on after will.

I would try out Wedge and Antilles for the Guinea Pigs if you are a Star Wars Person.

Or Worf and Moug if Star Trek.

Perrin and Faile or Moraine and Lan for WoT people?

message 13: by Joanna Chaplin (new)

Joanna Chaplin | 1175 comments Our cats are named after characters from Greek myths: Hippolyta and Perseus, Lyta and Persy for short. But Lyta is kind of also named for Lyta Alexander, from the show Babylon 5.

Lyta had a little Vorlon
Its fleece was white as snow
And everywhere that Lyta went
Her Vorlon was sure to go.

Trike | 11203 comments On a side note about pet names:

I once took all five of my Pugs to the vet at the same time (because of temporary insanity) and a woman pigeonholed me in the lobby to explain to me what their names said about me and the time in my life, and that the names actually reflected me more than they did the dogs.

She went on in this vein for a good fifteen minutes. Finally I said to her, "Yeah, they're all rescues. I didn't name them."

message 15: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5 comments These are some great ideas! Thanks guys! Bamf and Pillar of Autumn crack me up, kind of thinking of trying those out because they make me smile. I also really like the idea of calling them Luke and Leia but they're both girls since I don't want my two pigs to turn into twelve.

Trying to find girl names in fantasy has made me realize that all the guys in fantasy/scifi get the cool names. I've had a guinea pig I named Appa (from the Last Airbender) and I suggested Gandalf for my boyfriend's grey tabby so that he could joke to friends that would watch it while we were away that if Gandalf died they would just need to replace him with a white cat. Those names fit so well, it's been really hard to think of girl names that fit these pigs as well.

Anyone know of any good female dragon names? I thought Lessa and Ramoth might be good but Ramoth is not the prettiest name.

That is actually really creative for guinea pig names! This is why I ask you guys for ideas.

Ysera and Onyxia? (Hearthstone/World of Warcraft)

EDIT: That's pretty funny Trike. Not wanting to rename our rescue pet is why I grew up with a dog named Princess. She was the prettiest.

Tintaglia from Robin Hobb's Elderlings series.
Norberta from Harry Potter.
Korlat from the Malazan series. She's a shapeshifter who changes into a dragon.

Persy's foster name was Stewie. The lady who fostered him and his litter-mates let her son give them their foster names, and he named the kitten who would eventually be our Persy after the character from Family Guy. We adopted both of them young enough that there wasn't a problem renaming them. Lyta and Persy will both come when called.

One of my cats is named Khaleesi. Sadly she has no dragons.

Leesa (leesalogic) | 675 comments PUGS! I love pugs so much! Would love to see pictures :) And of the piggies!

All of my pets are rescues and if they were from litters I didn't foster, someone else named them and I just kept the names.

I did rename one foster cat, who came in with the name "Boy." We decided Floyd sounded enough like Boy but was a little more personal.

Nick, Khaleesi needs dragons. :(

In the same universe, if either is pure white, how about Ruth? and for the other Path?

Not dragons obviously but how about Auri and Devi?

Ruth's a male dragon. It doesn't come up much because he's small and asexual, but technically, Ruth is male.

One has some white on her, so Ruth might be suiting. The kingkiller chronicles are probably my favorite books of all time so Auri and Devi have crossed my mind. I love Auri but Devi sounds like a boy's name (as it's pronounced in the audiobook) so I was thinking maybe Fela? Or Mola?

I will post a picture of the pigs when I get home tonight for you guys! If you're not familiar with guinea pigs, their babies are absolutely adorable.

Alan | 534 comments Joanna wrote: "... Ruth's a male dragon. It doesn't come up much because he's small and asexual, but technically, Ruth is male. ..."

Huh, when I read the book I visualized that you couldn't tell dragons' sex other than by color except when they were mating (hey, I was 11 give me a break) but it only makes sense for Ruth to have been externally male if they were expecting "him" to fly when the Green dragon went up. thanks

message 28: by Joanna Chaplin (new)

Joanna Chaplin | 1175 comments Alan wrote: "I visualized thatyou couldn't tell dragons' sex other than by color except when they were mating..."

Knowing a gender of an individual only really matters for mating or if the species is gender dimorphic. So, if there are meaningful differences between physical or societal characteristics of the gender of that species. In the Pern novels, female dragons are larger, and can't chew firestone without going sterile. In addition, certain colors are male and certain colors are female. So in a sense, 11-year-old-you was not that far off.

I named her Shota.

I had a black cat as a kid named Witchiepoo.

Hey, I was 7.

Leesa (leesalogic) | 675 comments Thanks for sharing! And I <3 rescue. I foster neonatal kittens or older sick cats needing a break from the shelter for a month or so, but have adopted all my animals (cats, rats, mice, and a bunny) from the shelter or rescue. I also tend to take older/sick/hard to adopt rats and mice.

Once I get rid of some of my clutter, I'd like to set up a piggy habitat. I love the sound of REET REET REET when it's veggie time.

And if I'm really ambitious in the next few years, I'd love to rescue a pug/pug cross.

As in the witch woman from Sword of Truth novels? I like!

Our most recent pets were shelter dogs. We HAD to change their names, they were awful. The younger was an Australian Shepard with splotches they had named "Moo Moo" (because she looked like a cow I guess?) and the other was a Rottweiler mix named "Penelope". Ugh. We didn't really go with nerdy names, but we named them both 'dog' in other languages. Moo Moo became Gi-li (Dog in Cherokee) and Penelope became Sobaka (dog in russian). So maybe a little nerdy. :)

message 40: by Kev (new)

Kev (sporadicreviews) | 667 comments My first cats were named Mozart (Mo') and Tribble. I wanted a third at the time named Berlioz (Bear for short). My wife's cat that recently died from cancer was named after Willow's cat on Buffy: Miss Kitty Fantastico (but she was an orange tabby, not a black cat.)

Our current cats dont have genre-based names.

I've always wanted a yappy little lap dog to name Fizzgig, and another to name Sir Didymus.

message 44: by Trike (last edited Mar 02, 2016 07:56AM) (new)

Trike | 11203 comments So I've got a new dog. My last dog, Angel (https://flic.kr/p/hRdNk2), passed away in October from a heart condition. Last February the vet gave her 6 months to a year to live and she split it right down the middle at 9 months, almost to the day. She was a lovely little dog and I miss her; people who don't have pets don't get it.

But she was a Japanese Chin/Chinese Crested mix and I haven't had a Pug in a while since Chino died back in 2014, so I started the search for a new Pug.

A black Pug mix turned up down in Mehtuen, Mass, and two adoptions fell through because he had a Stage 2 tumor taken off of his chest. People hear "cancer" and run away. Since I specialize in dogs with medical problems that no one else wants, I decided to go have a look.

He's amazing, so I said yes.

They think he's 7, but he acts like he's 2. Very high energy and loves to walk. He's a jumbo Pug at 29 pounds, even bigger than Chino, who was a lean 28 pounds. He actually looks like a throwback to Pugs from the early 1900s who were larger and had less squashed faces than today's versions, the same way Panda did.

Since he was a stray no one knew his name. They were calling him Mitchell, which doesn't suit him. So for the first time in 36 years I actually got to name a dog.

I went through many fictional characters, but I haven't been able to find one that's suitable. I finally winnowed it down to either Retro (because he's a throwback Pug and rockets around the room with toys) or Amerigo, which is a name I have jokingly said I would call a son were I to ever accidentally reproduce. He's so high-energy that I started calling him GoGo, which I'm rationalizing is short for Amerigo.

Amusingly, people of different walks of life are assuming I named him after a fictional character, and you can tell their general age range by which one they think he is: Go-Go from Waiting for Godot, Gogo from Kill Bill, GoGo Tomago from Big Hero 6 or an Inspector Gadget reference.

So here's GoGo the Retro Pug:

Also a darn fine comic artist in general.
