Thanks for catching that Donna!

We have a science fiction slot to fill now - I’ll check some of the finished books we haven’t used after dinner to see if one fits.

Karolyn | 1041 comments Dale - we have some finished fantasy books we can use for S21. So you don’t have to read Little Song of Pain unless you want to 😁

I think you were asking what Historical Fiction book I could read - it's The Men From Echo Creek by N.R. Walker.

I have the book via KU and the audio via hoopla, and I feel guilty if I don't read my electronic borrows. I hadn't planned on reading it immediately, but there's no reason I couldn't move it up. :)

@Karolyn & Tara
Since we're not using Ramen Assassin for the Mini any longer, let me know if you need page numbers, etc., if you want it for a Supply Drop.

message 856: by Donna (new)

Donna (dkflynn33) | 2715 comments Same with my books. If you need page numbers for anything. I wrote down page numbers in my notebook as I was reading each book. They were all physical books lately so I think I have notes on all of them.

On it - Malas is a quick read, only 250 pages. And I've got a 5 hour plane ride Friday - consider both HF books done by this weekend. And I can get through my #2 for the Wall as well (this weekend I plan on doing nothing but relaxing and reading once I get home from this trip!)

Dale, if I feel like I'm struggling to get that #2 done, I'll let you know - but all of my books seem like pretty quick reads right now (I think I was panicking earlier and then got through 100 pages of the one about to expire 😂)

Lastly, count on me for the battle this time around!

message 858: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 240 comments Great - I've done 2 of our supply drops - so if either of you want to let me know all the ways any of your non shelter books work, that would be great and I will go ahead and send over! 💕

message 859: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 240 comments Also - we have about 400 more shelter points than any of the other categories if you want to keep that in mind when thinking about how to classify things going forward!

Truitt_T | 801 comments I just posted myfinal listed book for the Mini, complete with page numbers in case it needs to be used for a supply drop.

I've run into a slight problem, though. GR has the Kindle edition at 244 pages - but Amazon h it at 308 pages. In fact, one of my quotes for the Supply Drop (if needed) is from page 254.

Does anyone know a Librarian? If we could get the page count changes, that's a few more points. And given how tight the race has been.....

The Assassins of Thasalon - 244

Joanna Jones (joannajones) | 69 comments I finished The Other last night. It was superb! Beautiful descriptive writing juxtaposed with death and despair. If anyone enjoys a bit of horror, this one is worth a read.

Now...what to read next? 🤔

Thanks Tru - I will see about getting that changed (I am a librarian, but haven't done this before so will figure it out!)

We're gonna stick with that for the mini and I'll use one of the other ones for supply drop!

ooooh, good to know! Adding it to my TBR - I've gotten into horror more over the past couple of years! If you haven't tried Silvia Moreno-Garcia, I highly recommend!

She's great! I enjoyed Mexican Gothic. It looks like she has a new book that just came out too.

Joanna Jones (joannajones) | 69 comments Did we ever find out if we can get BOM DQ points for The Familiar if we read it before the start date?

message 869: by Jhmingos (new)

Jhmingos | 704 comments I finished all the books for the mini. I'm also (hopefully) going to finish The Wishing Game for BOM points. Enjoying that book so far.

We cannot, unfortunately.

Truitt_T | 801 comments Go District 2!!!

Thanks, Tara, for updating that page count. So many teams are so close to each other in points that I hated for even those few not to count.

Count me in as another Silvia Moreno-Garcia fan, even though I don't enjoy horror. I thought Mexican Gothic was good, but that Gods of Jade and Shadow was better (less creepy.) For a different take on vampires, Certain Dark Things was quite good.

She's got some non-horror shorter fiction - Signal to Noise and Prime Meridian. Well, drat - now that I'm thinking about it, I want to reread Prime Meridian, which was the first thing of hers I read.

I think I have four of her books on my TBR. She's usually my go to for horror, set in Mexico and a host of other things. Her writing is beautiful, even if I don't always like her subject matter, lol.

message 873: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments And a few more things:

@Karolyn
I'm reading The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant. It works for another challenge, so I didn't pick it up for this Mini specifically, but it is MPG Nature. I probably won't finish it today, but I'll certainly have it done by Sunday. I just wanted to mention it in case you wanted to sub it in. For any non-fiction readers on the team, it's very good so far! And I really loved his most recent book Fire Weather: A True Story from a Hotter World.

@Tara
I've now seen contradictory information as to if you may participate in a BOM if you've read a book during the challenge, but not during the BOM specific dates. I'd hate for us to miss out on the points....

To everyone:

I was just looking at the Team Standings and noticed that we are tied for the LOWEST number of BOM points. I thought I'd post the point opportunites currently available:

Classic BOM:

The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo - starts 7/2
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

The Book That Wouldn’t Burn by Mark Lawrence - starts 7/15
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Informal Buddy Read
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - started 6/15 - ends 7/15
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Backroom Challenge - 7/10 - 8/10
A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by K.J. Charles
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

They'll be an Informal Buddy Read for Mockingjay starting soon, and one more BOM in early August.

I'll admit I'm not the best about completing BOMs, but we could certainly use the points, if anyone feels inclined to give it a try.

message 874: by Donna (last edited Jul 12, 2024 11:53AM) (new)

Donna (dkflynn33) | 2715 comments I have both The Familiar & The Book That Wouldn’t Burn. I plan to read The Familiar next and the other soon. Gotta finish my current book first.

message 875: by Angela (new)

Angela | 114 comments Unfortunately neither of the BOM are appealing to me as a non fantasy reader and the backroom book is second in series and I have not read the first, which also does not appeal to me.
I did read Wishing Game, which (unpopular opinion) I did not enjoy. I will be continuing with the Hunger Games Series.
I will be reading August BOM The MIdnight Feast if it is during the challenge. I already read Funny Story by Emily Henry in April.

message 876: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 240 comments I can do the backroom challenge (just got it from the library digitally) and The Book That Wouldn’t Burn (placed hold for physical copy at my library)!

As for BOM, this is what the MODs said in the captain's chat:

The book needs to be read during the challenge, and the questions answered during the BOM period. You can't get BOM points without also getting resource points

message 877: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments @Tru - thanks! I’ll have a Silent Spring done tomorrow and it works for non-fiction or nature. Then will use your The Tiger for the other slot (and add it to my TBR.

In the Shadow of Slavery is good but I really need/want to be focused while reading it. It’s been hard to read more than 20-30 minutes at a time, so I wouldn’t mind more time with it.

Sorry no links - on the darn app at work 😤

message 878: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments @ Donna - As busy as you are, I still don't know how you find time to read.....

@Angela While I didn't dislike The Wishing Game, I didn't love it, either. I'm probably not going to read either of the two July BOMs, so I get it. Besides - we both have to keep reading for SRC. :)

@Tara Excellent! I'll be joining in on the Backroom book this time - it was too recent a reread for me to join in on The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen. I'll br just beyond 6 months months for A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel at the very end of July.

@Karolyn The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival is also MPG Nonfiction (although no MPG Survival, although it's mentioned in the title) so feel free to use it wherever.
I'm with you on some books only being readable in small doses, no natter how good the book is.

Joanna Jones (joannajones) | 69 comments That's a bummer we can't count the BOM points for The Familiar, but c'est la vie.

I'll be reading the The Book That Wouldn’t Burn for the next BOM, but not the back room one as it doesn't appeal to me.

I read all the Hunger Games books already and don't feel a need to re-read them, otherwise I'd pitch in there.

Karolyn | 1041 comments Weekend Update
We’re almost through Round 2. Here are the books we need finished for the mini - if you’re worried about finishing something let us know so we can plan a backup.
Tara - Historical Fiction
Tru - Nature
Dale - Book #7 and #8

Battle Planning
We just got the first title for the battle so we can start planning. This round the Capital goes first and their starting title is Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone. We’ll see what they pick and send over.

Two things… I suggest we work cooperatively with the Capital again to max points without getting awful letter. But if anyone wants to advocate for chaos… let’s talk about it.
Second - we only have a week to plan so will need to go a bit faster than last time. So… if you want to be sure to read for the challenge let us know so we don’t exclude anyone 😁

message 883: by Donna (new)

Donna (dkflynn33) | 2715 comments I would like to read for the round.

message 884: by Donna (new)

Donna (dkflynn33) | 2715 comments I agree with working with the Capitol like we did the last time.

message 885: by Angela (new)

Angela | 114 comments I also agree with working with the Capitol. I too want to participate in this round but will be away for most of the day so will check back in tomorrow afternoon to see where we are with the rounds.

Dale | 377 comments You can put me down as a reader for the battle again

message 887: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments One of the books the Capital is considering is One by One. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if everyone on both teams reads it as a buddy read and fly through 2/3rd the battle?

I’d that evil? Or funny?

Karolyn | 1041 comments I dropped a note in their thread. And… there are at least two books by that title.

message 891: by Jhmingos (last edited Jul 13, 2024 10:44AM) (new)

Jhmingos | 704 comments I'm really on board to read One by One 😅. As a mystery fan, it's kind of embarrassing to admit that I haven't read a Freida McFadden novel. There's also the same title by Ruth Ware (One by One), which I'm ok with re-reading.

message 892: by Sixty (new)

Sixty (sixtyone) | 311 comments I am down to read for the battle. I would also be fine with reading One by One.

message 893: by Karolyn (last edited Jul 13, 2024 01:55PM) (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Ok, so if the Capital is game, we have 3 right now willing to read one of the One by One books

1. Karolyn
2. Jhmingos
3. Sixty
4. Dale

Friendly reminder for the battle we cannot start battle books till the start of week 2, so there’s just over a week we need to wait before starting battle books.
