Karolyn | 1041 comments I was thinking something Manhattan Project related? Maybe post nuclear apocalypse fiction? Not that anything is jumping to the front of my brain.

message 1152: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments For plot element related to District 13 could we use something where there is a cover up or diversion (like they had to hide the nuclear stuff if I remember the book correctly)?

message 1153: by Dale (new)

Dale | 377 comments I am reading a book that has an abandon mine in it that houses a "god" would that work for plot element that can be linked to the district?

We could get way with that. Or a group of rebels / a rebellion, people living underground, some sort of safe haven, a hidden base, a bombing....

Well, I was really responding to Karolyn's post (I hadn't refreshed, so didn't see yours, Dale) but the underground factor still might work. Does the God live underground?

Jhmingos | 704 comments Sixty, I'm almost done with two books that can work for "U" and "I". Would it be okay if I swap my books in and bank your books? Or are you almost done with yours?

message 1159: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 240 comments ok - question - is it explicit in instructions that we can't go back and change our books for this mini? For example, if we have a book that works for a letter in other tributes that would work better in our district 13 round and we find another book for said letter in other tributes, could we swap?

Does that make sense?

Just a thought!

Go for it! I was just about to start a U one, but I can swap to something else no problem.

message 1161: by Sixty (new)

Sixty (sixtyone) | 311 comments I swapped to Hiroshima Diary: The Journal of a Japanese Physician, August 6-September 30, 1945 that has a mushroom cloud on the cover, so that should hopefully work for the district 13 related cover.

Truitt_T | 801 comments It looks like we need O and R for the Spell Out.

I'll start an O now. I have an R lined up, but I'm thinking it's more important for BOMB in title for the Distric Wheel tasks.

message 1163: by Dale (new)

Dale | 377 comments i can look for an O if needed

message 1164: by Jhmingos (new)

Jhmingos | 704 comments I was going to read Of Human Bondage. Will that work for BOMB or does the title need to have two B's?

message 1165: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments I be just started an O - maybe an R?

Then I can save my R book for the District task it fits.

message 1166: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments Jhmingos wrote: "I was going to read Of Human Bondage. Will that work for BOMB or does the title need to have two B's?"

Sadly, we need two Bs. But the majority of the Spell Out options need one or more Os - it certainly won't go to waste.

And if no one gets to before I can, I do have a 13th in series option I can read - but that's a few books down the line for me.

message 1167: by Jhmingos (last edited Aug 06, 2024 11:19AM) (new)

Jhmingos | 704 comments I can read The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories for BOMB. That should work and it's less than 200 pages.

message 1168: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments Woohoo! I was just looking at the spreadsheet, and it looks like we're ready for anothe Spell Out spin - go team!

And since Lizzie has got BOMB covered, I've started a 13th in series book. If someone else finishes one sooner, please feel free to take he spot. It'll be tonight before I'm done.

I can't wait to see what crazy spell out phrase we get next!

message 1169: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 240 comments Just sent a request for a a new spin over!

message 1170: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 240 comments ELECTRIC FORCEFIELD!

I've added it to our planning sheet - we probably have a good amount of banked books that will work

message 1171: by Jhmingos (new)

Jhmingos | 704 comments That's a lot of E's, but I have one that will work. I feel like you can't go wrong with vowels since they're everywhere in these spell outs.

Head's up, I'm making really great progress with the District Wheel task (BOMB title and orange text on the cover). I should be done tonight also so there's a chance we might finish the District 13 Wheel today.

message 1173: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Sorry I’ve been MIA today, it’s been busy. I’ll try to keep an eye out if we need another spin tonight.

Hopefully I can read a bit after dinner. I need to destress and a cup of tea, a book, and some Olympics in the background sounds heavenly.

Lizzie - If you're making quick progress with The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, you're doing better with it than I did! There was no way I could read that one quickly. :)

I finished my District book - 13th in a series. For one that looked really difficult, we're doing extraordinarily well!

I've got an E book I'll read next.

Would violet work for purple?

message 1180: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Dale - there is a banked book we can use for purple cover if you’re not sure about yours.

message 1181: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments Hmmm...after my E book, I've got a 1st in series that doesn't work for the current Spell Out that can be used for District 1, if no one else finishes something first.

message 1182: by Tara (last edited Aug 07, 2024 07:39PM) (new)

Tara Peace | 240 comments I've got Husbands & Lovers for plot element - should finish tomorrow. The Midnight Feast could also work and on track to finish that tomorrow too!

message 1183: by Dale (new)

Dale | 377 comments Karolyn wrote: "Dale - there is a banked book we can use for purple cover if you’re not sure about yours."

I dont think thats purple enough the one in the blanked books

message 1184: by Jhmingos (new)

Jhmingos | 704 comments Should we think about repeating this district wheel once it's completed? Out of all the district wheels, District 1 seems like one of the easiest and we have more than one book for a purple cover, plot element, #1 in series etc. I can probably cover books set in Japan if no one volunteers.

message 1185: by Jhmingos (new)

Jhmingos | 704 comments I just finished Fault Lines and it works for either set in Japan or author first & last initials in LUXURY ITEMS. Is there a preference where I should put it in?

Japan bc i feel like that one is harder

I can't believe we're down to the last few days of the Games - and we're suviving!

Woohoo!

I just added two O books - I'll definitely finish one today.

And I have a banked book that's not good for much else that's a series P - Delay of Game, Penalty Box.

Or, if we want to save that, I've got a very quick P.

I think the Japan wheel is done. I was the last one and just finished "item related to district on the cover". We should be good to go.

message 1197: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments I’ll get us another District…

message 1198: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments We have District 1 again - seems like we thought it was one of the better picks, so kept it.

message 1199: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments If we pull an S book from the Banked Books, we'll have every letter claimed for the Spell Out, with only four books to finish.

I was fine moving my own books over, but I thought I'd leave it to the Captains -or the individual readers - to move an S over.

Having Banked Books really helps!

message 1200: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments So I ended up mving an S book I had banked over to the Spell Out. I'd been thinking we should hold on to it in case we needed it for District 13 (it's #13 in a series), but with less than 3.5 days left of the challenge, how likely are we to need that?

That leaves 4 books/letters to go. There is a Banked I book (Ivelisse/Wendy Darling/I series) that we could use, if needed, but no Os.
