Yay and yea :) tho my reader brain is like go big or go home and read the whole series lol🤣🥲

Karolyn | 1041 comments I might have a book with a horn… just need to figure out if it’s actually a horn or an antler 😬

For the supply drops, remember that if we ask the other team for something for the mini, they would have to be able to read an “extra” book for that task (meaning we can’t both use it for our minis). And the tasks that are hard for us are probably hard for them as well.

Not saying we should/shouldn’t ask, just something for us to think about.

Added the page number to the quote in A Love Song of Ricki Wilde. Everything's been updated on the SS.

Truitt_T | 801 comments I suppose as we get closer to the 15th, we can coordinate a bit more as to who's rushing to finish for the remaining tasks, but for now we seem to be doing pretty well.

With 70 tasks, we need to finish 4-5 a day, putting us at 12-15 completed by the end of today. I just checked, and there are 15 marked as completed on the Mini page - go District 2!!!

The book I currently have listed for Set in Peru, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela is very, very slow going. I'm pretty sure it was someone's thesis and while very interesting, it requires close reading. I'm tackling it in dribs and drabs....

Does anyone have any books for tasks they particularly want to recommend?

Hey Tru - would you mind adding resource reasons to the books you've dedicated to the mini bc we can use them for both!

As for books, This Summer Will Be Different by Carley Fortune was a cute and, importantly, quick read.

And @Karolyn, yes, I was just thinking(hoping) that maybe they would have a plethora of the ones we don't have ha!

I say yes! Also, rosemary? And you could get real specific on the pig and list one of the cuts. What's the one in the top right corner? My eyes are seeing an oyster but I don't think I'm right haha

Of Love and Other Demons is set in Columbia, but I have to admit, as much as I love Gabriel Garcia Márquez's writing, this one was slow going for me, although once I got to the middle, it went by fast and was good. Only 160 pages, so an easy read if someone wants to pick it up for location pts.

I definitely recommend Chronicle of a Death Foretold for a book set in Colombia or an author with a diacritic name. It's a quick read, less than 150 pages. The book is very sad though.

I've added Resources for my books - sorry I was a bit confused. :)

To all who have recommended several fabulous Latin American authors, I know I should try to read books by them for this, but I'm just not up for sad right now. One of these days....

I've picked up Beneath a Panamanian Moon via hoopla. As you might imagine, it's set in Panama.

@Tara - I actually own Fruit of the Drunken Tree, but as I mentioned above, I'm a little wary because of the sad potential. Am I right to be concerned?

As for Crete, I found The Dark Labyrinth by the fabulous Lawrence Durrell - also via hoopla. No idea how good it might be, given that I've never heard of it before, lol. Another possibility is Villa Ariadne, available via KU. I have to admit that it might not be very good....

I previously posted my list of CORNUPIA and Idaho books, so that leaves me with one I found for 3 Food Items on Cover - The Heartbreak Bakery I have no idea if it's any good, but my library has provided me with a hard copy, and hoopla with audio.

Now I just have to finish the books I'm already obligated to read so I can move on to some of these - I can't see getting to them all. I was just counting up completed books, again, and we appear to be right on target. Go District 2!

message 220: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 240 comments I can try to snag Ariadne by Jennifer Saint from my library for Crete - looks like it is available!

And yes Tru, Fruit of the Drunken Tree is sad, but v beautiful (as are so many books from Latin America, so I feel you!)

One thing to note for everyone re: food in text. It is 3 items and they have to be 3 of the following: apple bread carrot rice cheese chicken corn egg fish grape ham honey lobster pepper tomato salt!

And a reminder - next Wednesday (6/12) I will be gone for about 6 days camping which means little to no service - I'll get everything added to the spreadsheet before I go, but I am hoping @Karolyn can take over for the last bit of this round! (I'll probably have another camping trip in July but hopefully not at the end of a round 🤦🏼‍♀️)

Dale, I echo your sentiment! We got this! 💕

Trust me, I keep having to double-check too.

I will send one of the three over today and will send the rest separately and later as we see where District 3 is with mini and books over the next week.

The sending team gets to keep page points of any book sent to another team, and they log it on their team sheet as a resource for their team, but they cannot use that book for the mini.

The receiving team logs received books this way:

For Mini Task - 0 Page points
Resource - You get to earn the free page points
Protection - 0 Page Points (have to think of two resources to use for defense)

Woohoo! Ok, I will finish Madness Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum by Antonia Hylton probably tomorrow and send it your way (can't use it for mini but had from the library! "One of the following food words in text (plural OK, no other variants): corn, grape, ham, bread, cheese, apple, fish, chicken, bread, rice, tomato, pepper, salt, honey, lobster"
Maybe I am missing something??
It looks like we need at least three food items to be present on the cover though.

I think they ment they you need three food off of this list but can only use one of those foods
So like if a sentence said " she got the eggs, cracked the egg and put it in the pan" it wouldnt work

Sixty (sixtyone) | 311 comments I'll be starting an orange cover book today.

I just want to make sure I understand how it works so I don't mess it up! From what I understand, we read a book and determine what category it could fit into (weapons, defense, food, or shelter) and when it's completed we post it on the spreadsheet with the justification for the category selected.

Additionally there are mini tasks, where there are other tasks assigned, such as books with an orange cover, horns on cover, etc. And these books still need to be assigned to weapons, defense, food, or shelter.

Am I understanding how it works correctly? Or, am I missing anything?

So if the book is for the mini just use it for the mini :)
And if you find a book for shelter, food, defense,or weapons just use it for that :)

That was my mistake - you only need one but it HAS to be one of the ones listed. And then 3 from cover. And it can only be repeated once - meaning we have to have 5 different foods - so if you see multiples throughout the book, make note in case we need to move stuff around.

I'll take 1 Crete (getting Ariadne from the library in the am)

As for extended titles, yes it says subtitles in the rules!

Welcome Sixty! For each book you do until 6/15 - if you have some that fit what we still need for the mini - great! But yes, also see how it works for regular tasks - weapons, food, shelter, defense. Since these are so open to interpretation, it shouldn't be hard!

Hopefully this helps! Any other questions, put in here. We have a great team who is happy to help everyone out! 💕

Tara - I have multiple CORNUPIA books I can knock out very easily, once I get through my current batch. And as for Unjust Conditions: Women's Work and the Hidden Cost of Cash Transfer Programs, the academic writing is such slow going I'm considering replacing it with something quicker, so don't move it yet!
