We're working on checking shelves and spreadsheets and I have a few favors to ask...

Sixty We can use any books that you started on/after May 15th for the challenge. So, if you have some that you finished before you were assigned to our team, please add them so we can get the points.

Ive Can you please add Full Moon Over Freedom and Foxglove to your Book Games shelf?

Raquel Can you please add Before I Let Go and The Suite Spot to your Book Games Shelf?

Donna Can you please add The Pale Princess to your Book Games Shelf?

Joanna Can you please add Starling House to our Book Games Shelf?

Tru Can you please add The Shining Path and Beneath a Panamanian Moon to your Books Games Shelf?

Tara Yes, our captains forget sometimes too :) Can you please put You Dreamed of Empire on your Book Games Shelf?

And last but not least, if you haven't checked in on the thread lately, can you pop in and let us know you're doing OK? Particularly Ive, Donna, Alisha, and Devann. It's fine if you prefer to lurk, we just want to know you're around and doing alright :)

Doing good. Finished a couple of books this past weekend and put them on the spreadsheet. Planning on doing a couple more BOMs: the current one and the backroom one.

I assume you are asking for the official spreadsheet? The captains/co-caps need to populate the official. On our team's working file if there is a check in column A that means one of the captains has checked your shelf and verifies the book fits. If there is a checkmark in Column B... that means we've moved the book to the official spreadsheet.

All of that to say... if you have a finished book missing from the team's working spreadsheet - please enter it there and/or let a captain know. If it's missing from the official spreadsheet, we probably just have not gotten to it yet.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments hey i'm around and still trying to read some stuff. i thought doing this challenge would inspire me to read something other than middle grade and graphic novels this year and so far it's not going that well lol. but we just put our pool up for the year and it's supposed to get warmer soon so i hope i can make up my slow start by listening to audiobooks while i swim. should have a few new releases coming in from the library soon too.

Tara Peace | 240 comments Thanks Karolyn - we can't all be perfect no matter how much we try 😂. I've added it.

Been caught up in end of year all day trainings today and tomorrow - so moving everything over to the main spreadsheet as I can (I try to get all of the days input reads over in the evening/early the next morning, but it doesn't always happen!)

But also Dale, the only ones that populate are from the Round 1 challenge, so make sure you're putting anything used for the mini-Cornucopia onto that tab too, as you can use a book for both!

That all being said, I am going to be camping ⛰🏕 for the next week starting Wednesday am with limited availability (if I haven't already said it!)

Middle-grade books are one of my go-to genres when I want to break out of a reading slump. It's always fun to discover one that both kids and adults would enjoy.

I think we still have open spots for Idaho and Crete.

Tasks that are taken, but not completed, are highlighted in light yellow.
Unclaimed tasks are bright blue.

I've got a book for the last Idaho spot, but nothing I actually want to read for the final Crete spot. If Crete remains open, though, I'll knock something out on Friday.

We really are doing well, though - as of last night, we were on pace to finish all the tasks!

Tara Peace | 240 comments Thanks everyone!

Ok - a couple of reminders. The spreadsheets need to be complete by 1 hour after the end of round 1. They will be locked by Mods so we need to make sure everything is on there - I'll add as much as I can today before I leave! I'm going to preemptively do Ariadne (I'll finish tomorrow) and I will send the final supply drop over to our lovely District 13!

Also, BOM reads/read dates and posts need to be input as well, otherwise it will not count. You can continue discussing on the thread, but it will not give us any points!

Tara Peace | 240 comments Ok, one last update!

The new Book Battles is up starting 6/15. We are paired as follows:
District 2 & The Capitol and our book title is In Five Years. Essentially what is going to happen is we need to find a book that overlaps that title by at least 3 letters (it can be any 3 consecutive, so fiv, year, ars etc. ...). Does anyone want to start this?

Here is the link to where you can find the rules: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 324: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments I think we have to wait until we’re given our Randomly Assigned Book Title at the beginning of Round 2 before we can make our first pick.🤷‍♀️
At least I think so…..

message 325: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments I’ll post more on the challenge when I’m home from work and try to answer questions. It’s an interesting one! We need to work with our partner team to create a chain of book titles.

There is only a 5 point bonus to the team that “wins” so we’re incentivized to work together and maximize both our points.

Chiming in from The Capitol here. I'm almost positive the rules specify the final 3 (or more) letters of the book title!

Sorry. I was snooping because we just can't wait to get started!

ETA: Just confirmed in the Captain's Group that it is the LAST letters of the book.

Correct Laura, I messed up! It is the last letters of the book. So our book is In Five Years so it needs to be a book that has at least ARS. So arson, arsenic, etc.

message 329: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments We get points based on the number of letters we match, right? So if we read In Five Years, we’d max the points?

message 330: by Dale (new)

so we need to read a book that has ARS in the title?

Laura | 5524 comments Dale wrote: "i still dont understand it lol

It has to start with ARS (or you can add more of the ending letters if needed. EARS, YEARS, EYEARS, ETC). Articles can be ignored.

Truitt_T wrote: "We get points based on the number of letters we match, right? So if we read In Five Years, we’d max the points?"

Each book is worth 5 points. And the winning team gets an additional 5 points. Winning is the team who reads the most of their books. If both teams read all 10, the winner is the team with the LEAST amount of overlap.

It could even be EAR (or YEAR) and then the second word starts with an S.

Tara Peace | 240 comments If this helps:

Book 1: In Five Years
Book 2: Arsenic and Old Puzzles
Book 3: Les Miserables
Book 4: Bless Me Ultima
Book 5: The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Book 6: The Galaxy and the Ground Within
Book 7: Hinds Feet in High Places

Does that make sense?

Karolyn | 1041 comments Mini Update meaning a small update, not an update about the mini 😁

Glad you all have seen the new challenge! And thanks Laura for popping by from the glorious Capital. I’m on my phone (iPad is DEAD) and will chime in on challenge questions after dinner when I can have a proper keyboard.

If you’re reading for a mini task, please be sure to also put the book on our Round 1 tab so we get the book points.

For the mini especially, once column A has a checkmark, please do not move the book without posting here so we know we have to re-check it (me… so I know to recheck it😂).

If you are or plan to read the Malevolent Seven for BOM points the deadline to finish it AND post link to three discussion posts by June 16.

If you are or want to read The Hunger Games for the informal BOM you need to finish it and post three discussion posts by June 15th.

I don’t have the cutoff date for the BACKROOM BOM - so if anyone has it handy please share.

Tara posted the timer till the end of the round. Us captions will probably ask for a slightly earlier cutoff since we only have an hour to finalize the spreadsheet. But we can talk more about that as we get closer to the end of the round.

Thanks Tara!!!

I’ll just add one thing quick… our team and the Capitol need to “volly” back and forth to select books. Meaning we pick a title, they pick, we pick, they pick. I think it’s in our best interest to be cooperative in planning though!! 😁

But that’s why we have a week to plan and then a week to have the “battle”

message 339: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments Hmmm... so in terms of 'fighting' nicely with our partnered team, I could suggest that I read Ars Historica, but since the final three letters are a not very convenient ICA, we might want to check with them first, right?

I'm guessing this is why we have a week to plan....

You’ve got the idea! BTW… there are only 6 words that start with “I a”.

Maybe we can come up with 1-2 more options and see what they might like?

message 341: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments I was thinking about Arsenic and Old Lace, but it’s not at my library or KU. Will do some more searches for “Arsenic” titles.

Truitt_T | 801 comments Karolyn wrote: "I was thinking about Arsenic and Old Lace, but it’s not at my library or KU. Will do some more searches for “Arsenic” titles."

I'd be willing to reread Arsenic and Old Lace, but the library copy available to me is only 96 pages.

There seem to be a surprising number of KU mysteries whose titles begin with Arsenic. Of course, it's hard to tell if they're any good, lol.

message 343: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments Wow - finding decent ending letters is really tough.

Do we count or ignore subtitles?

message 344: by Dale (new)

Dale | 377 comments I found Arsen by heather west, aresnic in azaleas by dale mayer and arson by tori ross

message 345: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5524 comments Don’t think too linear. If you read Ars Historica, we can read something that starts with I Can or I Came, or some other CA word.

message 346: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments I found a few Arson books, but they were definitely not my cup of tea!

I also came up with Arsenic in the Azaleas. For me, at least, it's available via hoopla. I can't say I'm excited by the thought of reading it, but I coud, if necessary.

EAS would give The Capitol easy, east, Easter.....

Any other ideas?
