I read this book about 20 years ago.

I believe the life form featured originated on mars, after an earth lander comes close it encodes itself into a data stream to earth, in a manner similar to a computer virus.

The Earth side of the story is heavily set in London, and features a hi tech computer/cybernetics company, with a female CEO.
