Vladimir (looneybgd) | 28 comments Hello everyone,
I got an email about a 120 page comic book publication being non-valid.

Hi Vladimir,

We are happy to count you as one of our Goodreads librarians. However, we recently noticed that you had added a non-valid book/comic (Najružniji par na svijetu) to our website, which is actually against our rules. As outlined in the Librarian Manual, Goodreads does not allow the addition of individual comics, unless they have an ISBN or ASIN. Please refrain from adding this data going forward.

Except, the book is valid, exists (I have it) and it is a bi-monthly publucation. It is a Serbian edition of an Italian comic book that runs 50+ years in both countries.

But the trouble with ISBN is that often in Serbia the whole serial clings to one ISBN. If I put it on one comic I can't put it again on another. It is often that the publishers reuse ISBN for multiple publications (books also). I understand that it's incomprehensible for Goodreads, but there are weird countries with ISBN malpractice and this is a real issue. It gets better with time, but there's decades of ISBN related issues that can't be fixed. But how to add editions if it's going to create problems for me as a librarian? Do you have any idea how to manage?

You should move this question to the more appropriate folder 'Questions (from Librarians only)'

Vladimir (looneybgd) | 28 comments No, it seemed generic. I'll try. Thank you. I will move it.

Tawnya | 4041 comments Another reason why the policy of comics needing an ISBN needs to be rethought. Whole portions of the world do not use them.
The Golden Age didn't have them.
But the drivel that AI puts out on Amazon is allowed. The scam artists whose books are 2 pages long are allowed.
UGH! I haven't even read comics for over 30 years, but this is just a dunderheaded decision.

Vladimir (looneybgd) | 28 comments Yes, I get that everyone puts all kinds of books here, but "add ISBN" rule makes it very hard for international publications.

Hi Vladimir. It looks like we responded to your support email a couple of days ago - I hope that was helpful!

For others on the thread, these comic books are allowed as they do have a valid ISBN. However, they will need to be added by Super-Librarians as they can add a duplicate ISBN edition, which will add the correct admin notes to the books.
