Hell House is a horror novel by American novelist Richard Matheson, published in 1971.

The story centers on four people: Dr. Lionel Barrett, a physicist with an interest in parapsychology, his wife Edith, and two mediums: Florence Tanner, a spiritualist, and Benjamin Franklin Fischer, who had visited the haunted house 30 years prior.

The novel combines supernatural horror with mystery as the researchers attempt to investigate the haunting of the house while their sanity is subtly undermined by its sinister supernatural influence. The home exploits its guests' deepest desires and attempts to turn people against one another during the course of their visit.

Wow! Anyone thinking about this one?

I'm reading it now. It's a really good haunted house story. I definitely need to read more Matheson.

Sounds like an intriguing read!

Blueberry (blueberry1) | 275 comments I will read it. I enjoy the author's writing. This will be my 4th book of his. I have to wait 4 weeks for the hold though. Surprising.

It was a really great quick read and a scary story but I thought the whole thing of what's really going on at the end was pretty overdone. Spooky haunted house. The details were anticlimactic.

Matheson is also the author of:
I Am Legend (1954); filmed as The Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971), I Am Omega (2007) and I Am Legend (2007)

The Shrinking Man (1956); filmed as The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) and subsequently reprinted under that title; also the basis of the film The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981)

Just in case a reminder is needed. Haha!

Blueberry (blueberry1) | 275 comments Starting this tonight. I had to wait a few weeks to get it and I have people lined up after me for it. I wonder what's causing the interest. I googled to check if a new movie remake was coming out but I don't see anything.

Blueberry (blueberry1) | 275 comments Scariest book I ever read.

What did you think about Belasco having his legs cut off so he could be shorter. That just made me laugh.
