J.S. Watts | 35 comments This is my review of Low Red Moon. Low Red Moon by Ivy Devlin

The book was a 3/4 for me. I had better begin by saying that I do not normally read YA fiction unless I know and particularly like an author's work or the book comes highly recommended. I find the "flavour" of most YA writing too mild compared to adult books - a bit like being given a corned-beef sandwich when you really wanted sirloin steak. In the case of Low Red Moon, I was given the book as a present and didn't even realise it was YA until I started reading it. As a result, the book was never likely to be a high scorer for me, though I can see that it would appeal to its target audience. Unfortunately, I'm really not the target audience.

On the plus side, the book is a real page-turner. It had me hooked from the get-go, because I wanted to know what was behind the gruesome and bloody murders. I also liked the spin on Little Red Riding Hood and the fact that it was the (view spoiler)

Negatives for me are: the fact that it is YA; the similarities to the Twilight series are pretty glaring, as are a number of typos and examples of poor grammar which escaped the editor's pen; I found the ending a bit of a let down after the mythic build-up throughout the book.

Despite the negatives, though, I liked it.

J.S. Watts | 35 comments I have just reviewed The Bones of Willow Lake for Morpheus Tales. It's due out in July - I'll post a link to it then.
