Week 8 tasks (July 29 - Aug. 4)
183. Soon you are all going to be a part of a sinister plot to take over the world… in a unique way. - read a book with a sinister character in it (your definition)
184. Last year, we helped people around the world get access to clean water. But it’s been a year, and the problem certainly hasn’t gone away. Work with your team to create a realistic prototype of a portable personal AWG (atmospheric water generator) system that could be used anywhere in the world. - read a book from the Clean Romance list
185. Hug a national forest! Go to your favorite national forest or park and be tree huggers. Set the camera up so we can see all the tree hugging action clearly. - read a book with trees on the cover
186. One of the biggest problems astronauts will face when they travel to Mars will be figuring out how to bring enough food for the three-year journey. Porcupanda has offered the idea of making their spacecraft out of food. Show them how. Build an edible spacecraft using anything except “space ice cream”. - reread a book that you first read over three years ago
187. Every year, the scientists at the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab make spectacular pumpkin carvings that put our humble Halloween jack-o-lanterns to shame. Whatever. What’s a rocket scientist got that you don’t have? Let’s see you out-do them! Show us your best and most outlandish WATERMELON-O-LANTERN carving. - read a book from the Book Titles with Hyphens list
188. For many years, military aircraft sported spectacular “nose art". As aesthetically appealing as aircraft nose art may have been, we think they botched it on the choice of canvas. Show us your best nose art - but this time, get it right! All art must be on, around, or incorporate, your nose. - get your nose in a book! (read any book you want)
189. The World’s Worst Lawyer. - read a book with a 4-word title
190. Oranges are the new black! Let’s see your most a-peeling cocktail dress all made from - you guessed it - orange peels. Pose in a crowded urban bar. - read a book where the MC spends time in a bar, saloon, pub, or tavern
191. You didn’t think we were going to let all those oranges go to waste, did you? Place signs along 5 miles of road leading up to an orange juice stand that speaks of the life-changing rejuvenation of the coming refreshment with a countdown of the miles. - read a book with 5 in the page count
192. In our busy world, people sometimes forget to slow down and see the beauty around them. Perform a task at work extremely slowly while everyone around you carries on at normal speed. When this is played back in in time lapse, you’re performing at normal speed and it’s the world around you that’s going too fast. - listen to an audio book at a slower setting for at least 5 minutes (longer than 5 minutes will drive you crazy, and I don't want that :)
193. The Reimann hypothesis of mathematics includes the Reimann zeta function, which categorizes some zeros as “non-trivial zeros" and others as “trivial zeros.” We think this unequal treatment of zeros, which are clearly all equal, is just wrong! Hold a protest in front of a university mathematics or computer science building with a sign that says something to the effect of "ALL ZEROS ARE EQUAL" or “NO ZEROS ARE TRIVIAL!” - read a book with a 0 in the publication date
194. Do you spend too much time indoors while you GISH? It’s time to get outside! Dust off your bicycle, grab a friend or two and go out and ride a 50-mile bike ride. You must track your progress on a GPS drawing app. Oh, by the way, you need to be wearing part of a pineapple or banana while you ride. - read a book written 50+ years ago
195. Using a steel shredder, shred a decommissioned bus. It must be a full-sized bus. Oh, and paint the windows of the bus to show its passengers. Although you should upload a video as your submission, be sure to take pictures of the event in case we need those for the coffee table book. - read a book where the MC rides in a bus or some other public transportation
196. On Friday, August 11th, at EXACTLY 9am PDT, we are going to give Giles Dudley a “thunderclap” of thanks. Because Giles thinks EVERYONE can make a difference no matter their circumstances, we’re going to prove it. Here’s your job: before the 11th, go out and do an act of kindness. But not just any act of kindness… Giles works hard to help refugee families and landmine victims, so your act of kindness should focus on expanding his work exponentially through the power of GISHWHES. - read a book with 'thunder' in the text
197. Play a few bars of a well-known tune on a well-known musical instrument—but not in the well-known manner. Play a cello tucked under your chin, a saxophone with mallets, or piano as a string instrument with a bow, that sort of thing. - read a book where a real well-known person is mentioned
198. Last year GISHWHES worked with the charities Random Acts and Giles Duley’s Legacy of War to forever change the lives of three refugee families by raising over $250,000 in just a few days.
This year, we are teaming up with those charities again. Here’s your assignment: get at least 10 donations from people or businesses NOT on your team. You and your team members are welcome to donate to your campaign, but that is not a requirement for points. - read a book that has over 250,000 ratings
199. Breaker, breaker! Tune in for details: CB Channel 27 (Frequency 27.27500) broadcasting near Lacy Park, San Marino, CA. (Latitude: 34.1204167 Longitude: -118.1201348) DATE & TIME: 8/7 12 PM PDT & 4:30PM PDT or 8/9 9 AM PDT. Listen on Broadcast CB CHANNEL 32 (Frequency 27.32500) broadcasting near Hermann Park Conservancy, Houston TX (Latitude: 29.7160286 Longitude: -95.3886413) DATE & TIME: 8/11 NOON CT - read a book with a number in the title
200. Research upcoming local, state, and federal elections in your area. Nominate a citizen you think should run for specific elected offices in those upcoming elections based on their qualifications and/or passion. Make a post on a social media, tag them (so they see it!), and explain why you want them to run. - read any book, but you must post a review of it on social media
201. Outside US: 00-1-323-645-0703 Within US: (323) 645-0703
Transcription:
“Hi, this is Misha and you’ve reached GISHWHES Exotic Do-It-Yourself Getaways. We would like you to set up a banquet or spa for hikers along a remote stretch of a major hiking trail. You must be at least one mile from a major road but not off the trail. And you must take lots of pictures and upload them showing you either giving a spa treatment for a passing hiker or a banquet experience for a passing hiker. Um, and, um (West or Maison talking in the background, Misha breaks up, beep)” - if you live in the USA, read a book set outside the USA; if you outside the USA, read a book set in the USA
202. Find a local hospital or cancer center and coordinate with them to deliver a comfort bag(s) to a patient. Fill a canvas bag with items to provide relief and comfort to a cancer patient: soft eye masks, scarves, a soft blanket, socks, ginger tea or candy, unscented natural lip balm, sudoku or coloring books, puzzles, poems, etc. Include a note of support or encouragement, if you wish. - read a book where a significant character spends time at a hospital (either as a patient, visitor, or as a job)
203. Bearby Von Bearamucci has an interview for a position as White House Communications Director on Saturday, August 12th at 8pm ET sharp! He was all set to drive the Gishbus across the country, but its engine wouldn’t start. He’s counting on gishers to help get him from Redding, California to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC. - read a book with 1 and 8 in the publication date
204. Escape GISHWHES! https://www.gishwhes.com/escape-room/ I actually tried this link. It didn't work :( - read a book where the MC has to escape from somewhere
205. We’ve received a bit of criticism that the hunt is “not really a scavenger hunt, it’s just Misha getting people to help him with his chores.” I’m honestly shocked anyone would say that! So, I’m adding the following item: Help me help you help me help myself. Show up at 10 AM PDT sharp on August 11 at this location in Bellingham, WA. Wear pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and bring a small bucket. Pick at least a quart of blackberries and DEPOSIT them into my big vessel so I can make lots of jam. - read a book with a title that begins with a letter in DEPOSIT
206. Sweden is a beautiful country and it’s time we stopped overlooking it as possible GISH locations. With that in mind, take a picture of yourself in front of the biggest landmark or point of interest in your town while holding a beautiful hand-lettered sign that reads, “We Are Sorry, Sweden”. - read a book in a genre you overlook or hardly ever read
207. Nothing says “good life choices” like a last-minute rush job tattoo. Get inked with a tattoo that includes “We create; therefore, we live.” or another gishy quote written in any language other than English. Feel free to adorn it with mascots or other hunt-inspired iconography. - don't begin reading a book until Friday
208. As you know, no one was able to successfully find Jared Padalecki or Jensen Ackles’ golf balls in Canada. Misha’s balls are a lot easier to find… maybe because they really get around. Find Misha’s balls in any of the following locations and take a picture with them. Then put them back EXACTLY where you found them so another team can have a chance to get their hands on Misha’s balls, too. LOCATIONS: near the Cathedral Basilica, Newark, New Jersey; outside Gatorland, Orlando, Florida; and near Rothko Chapel, Houston, Texas. - read a book with no one (1) in the page count (any number but 1)
209. GISHWHES is over! The crumbs of the great hunt, wild and weird global feast are soon to be all that’s left. Let’s see you work magic on these crumbs, (real breadcrumbs or whatever other crumbs you wish to use) and turn them into a portrait of actor Misha Collins. - read a book tagged 'Magic'
183. Soon you are all going to be a part of a sinister plot to take over the world… in a unique way. - read a book with a sinister character in it (your definition)

Hey everyone! My name is Lanelle. I live in hot Arizona. (And it is very hot right now!) I enjoy quilting, gentle walks in the woods or along beaches (doesn't happen very often), and reading. (That one is probably obvious.)
I like reading romantic suspense, and if it's set in the early 1800's, that's even better.

Hey, Ira. Nice to 'meet' you. Any thoughts about a name for our team? What book are you reading for this week, and which task(s) does it fit?
Week 2's tasks have been posted in the GISH II info, rules, and tasks thread.
I've put the list in Message 4.
I've put the list in Message 4.

I am currently reading for task #10, One Italian Summer, Set in Italy and Italian characters
Hey, Ira and Stormie! I'm glad you found the thread. Any ideas for a team name?
Which task for next week caught your fancy? Would you be interested in a buddy read?
Which task for next week caught your fancy? Would you be interested in a buddy read?

I mainly read romance and am working on multiple challenges right now. I will post my selection for this week later today as I'm hoping to do a combo with one of my other challenges.

Sounds good to me!

I like it!
I like it!

I'm always interested in buddy reads. As for the prompts, there are too many that look interesting. If you are interested I have Keeper of Enchanted Rooms on my TBR, so I could jump on that. If not I was thinking read a book where the MC has a pet, read a book a mythical creature in it, read a Science Fiction book or read a book that is tagged 'Adventure'
Ira wrote: "If you are interested I have Keeper of Enchanted Rooms on my TBR, so I could jump on that."
Charlie N. Holmberg is one of my favorite authors. I'm definitely up for a buddy read of Keeper of Enchanted Rooms. It's Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Unlimited Audio if anyone wants to join in.
Edited to Add: This book will work for
#30 - a lonely MC (your definition)
#31 - a mystery
#32 - written by a woman
#39 - written by an author whose first, middle or last name begins with C, P, or K
#41 - TBR list

I can do it. I really don't like doing Goodreads stuff on my tablet. It's frustrating. I haven't even tried on my phone. Yuck!

I assume you're talking about Week 1's book. You can't begin reading for Week 2 until Monday morning.

How to Play:
* Each team member will need to read one book each week.
* The book must match a task from that week's list.
* Books must be at least 140 pages. Audio book page length is determined by the first paper version that shows up.
How to get points:
1. Read a book for a GISH task. There will be 26 tasks each week.
You may not start reading your book before Monday morning (12:01 am, your time)
and
you must finish reading your book and report it by Sunday night (midnight, your time).
Each task gets points. The points may be higher if the task is trickier. The difficulty of the reading prompt does not reflect the points given to the task. (I did not assign the points to the tasks. That was done by GISH people.)
2. If the book you're reading fits a second GISH task, you can claim those points as well. (The connection must be obvious. If you're unsure if your book fits, check with your teammates. If you're still not confident, ask on the Q&A thread.)
3. Buddy read a book for a GISH task. This is worth 50 points.
***You can add 2 and/or 3 to the mandatory 1 for additional points.***
Team members can read the same task. Points for the previous week's tasks will be announced when everyone's Completion Posts are reported. Tasks will be posted each Friday morning.
If a team member has scheduled an absence, someone else on the team can match their book up to 4 different tasks so as not to miss points.
If your team has fewer than 5 members, someone on the team can read a second book to score points for the missing 5th person.
If someone misses two deadlines, they will be removed from the game.
Details:
*Teams will be posted Wednesday, June 5.
*There will be 8 'Weeks' to the game.
*Week 1's tasks will be posted Friday, June 7.
*The game will begin on Monday, June 10 at 12:01 a.m. (your time)
*The game will conclude Sunday, Aug 4 at 12:59 p.m. (your time)
*If your profile is set to private, you will need to open it for the duration of the game. You may need to be contacted by the head of your team and there are a few tasks where your teammates will need to see your bookshelves.
