The "Grand Championship Snail Race" began in Cambridgeshire in 1992 in the village of Snailwell. It regularly attracts up to 400 people to the village, more than doubling its usual population.

The snails compete on a 13-inch surface covered in cotton cloth. The racers are placed at a center circle and, when the command is given—"Ready, Steady, Slow!"—they're let loose toward the finish line.
