E.K. Frances | 99 comments Just read The Giver and I loved it right up until the end, but then it just stopped - I thought my Kindle was broken. But then I got very excited when I saw there were sequels, but the blurb has no mention of Jonas / Gabe.

So ... does anyone know if the sequels tell us what happened next? Did they die, is that what I'm missing? (It did seem like a death scene.)

And do any of the sequels tell us what happened to the Giver (and the community)? Or explain anything about how everything works?

Thanks!

Alex | 3 comments The third book, Messenger, shows what happens to Jonas and Gabe (though I think Gabe is mostly in the fourth book). I don’t think the Giver is mentioned in future books, and what happens to the community is left up in the air. I think there is a passing mention to this in Messenger, but I don’t remember exactly and its not much. The community is featured in the first part of Son, the last book, but it takes place at the same time as the first book. Also, Messenger acts as a sequel to Gathering Blue as much as it continues The Giver. Hope this helps!

E.K. Frances | 99 comments Very helpful - thanks! Are they worth reading? (the first book was free on KU but the rest are not.)

And do you remember if Jonas / Gabe just appear or do they actually explain it? It was very 'death-like' with the lights, not sure how she can write her way out of that.

Alex | 3 comments I'd say they're worth reading. They're not as good as The Giver, but I still enjoyed them. Of the three, I'd say that Messenger is the best and the one that most follows up that first book if that's what you're looking for. If you can though, I'd still recommend reading them in order (Gathering Blue, Messenger, Son).

I think she does explain it in passing. It isn't anything too wild, but it also isn't super in-depth either. It's not like Jonas and Gabe are a big focus in Messenger.

Allison (allisonwick) | 1 comments The sequels focus on different characters but then once you get through all of them, you see how they all intertwine. I really liked them for that reason and I definitely think they're worth reading! I agree that they're still not as good as the first one, but I'm glad I read the sequels.

E.K. Frances | 99 comments Thank you both. I'll look out for when they are on offer and then grab some copies :)
