Daisy | 313 comments Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, hugs, and well wishes. Chemo really kicked my butt this week. I slept from Tuesday evening until this morning almost non-stop. I was up for a few hours at a time then right back to sleep. I really hope it is no worse than this.

message 859: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2382 comments My dad died early this morning after a short hospital stay for aspiration pneumonia. His kidney function was also decreasing, so Chris and I were there earlier this week with other family members. Met with hospice and decided that it was time to go that route. He had been discharged from the hospital on Wed. and was okay that day, but he got much worse Thurs. Hospice nurse thought that with the oxygen and medications, he might make it through the weekend, but my brother got a call at 2 a.m. saying he was gone. Not a big surprise, but the finality of it is still - stunning. I was actually surprised that he lasted as long as he did after his stroke in January, but he'd been doing all right up until very recently. So we thought, anyway. I guess it was time. He was ready, and it was fast, which is a relief. He's with Mom now, and he's at peace.

Jean | 2382 comments Brenda, our moms died 15 days apart. Our dads died four weeks apart. In the interim, Chris lost her 99-y.o. aunt. One of my uncles (Dad's brother-in-law) died about a week before Dad - I'm not sure anyone even told my dad. So his only sister lost both her husband and now her older brother in the space of less than two weeks. Getting old ain't for wimps.

Daisy | 313 comments Thought I would give an update since I'm feeling a little better tonight.

I have only had one treatment so far. That one treatment almost killed me. I slept the first couple of days then felt a little better but it didn't last. I started sleeping again and just couldn't stay awake. I had thrush (a side effect of chemo) that was so bad it was in my throat. I then started running a low fever and ended up in the ER the Sunday after the treatment.

I had a lot of blood drawn, a chest xray, and a bag of fluids. The only thing the doctor could find was thrush so I was sent home. That following Tuesday a nurse from the hospital called to tell me I had bacteria growing in my blood. I went to see my primary doctor and she told me this was sepsis and put me on an antibiotic.

The oncologist would not give chemo because all my bloodwork was too low and I had this nasty infection. I was supposed to have chemo again today. I went for the treatment but I have been sick since Monday evening so I had to go to the hospital for more bloodwork and another chest xray. The doctor is checking for sepsis again since I've been having the same symptoms this week.

It has been an awful few weeks. I just hope they can figure out what is making me so sick. I'm determined not to spend the rest of my life sleeping and sick.

Hi Daisy, I read about this post of yours, and it's a pity how a random set of events, e.g a set of cells in your body who just want to evolve in a malignant way, can determine a person's health in such a drastic way.

MY thoughts are with you. I have my health but I also have problems, although not as serious as yours. Prayers are a noble, pure, and supernatural weapon to combat defeatism. I hope you stay as close to the person you were, as it's humanly possible.

The gentleness and self-assessment of your post says it all. You are a far better human being than I am, because you are brave, kind, and generous with your time. Plus you know, you prefer books over a lot of pleasures in life.

I will think of you, and send you messages of encouragement, because though I'm not you friend, I'm a fellow sufferer, and I may be in discomfiture at any time soon. A few seconds of inattention, and a truck may hit me. I could also succumb to salmonella which is prevalent in my country at this time. But I will think of you and say that life is precious, and worth fighting for. Take back your health inch by inch, that's my prayer for you.

Lorrea - WhatChaReadin'? (whatchatreadin) Daisy, I'm so sorry you are going through this. I know how difficult it is. I was a caregiver to my grandmother during her bought with cancer and chemo always had her down. I hope and pray that the doctors are able to get the infection out so they can get the cancer out!! Our thoughts are with you and sending you ((((HUGS)))!!!
