I suggest you ask yourself how you will feel if you don't go and things don't turn out well. From my experience, only you are likely know the answer to that one. In whatever you decide, I wish you the best, as do all of your GR friends.

Diane Lynch (dianedesmarrstlynch) | 306 comments So sorry Jean. That is tough. My dad was in Ocala, FL while we were in NY when he started having serious health issues at 83. You want to be there but I'm sure you have your own responsibilities that can't just be dropped or handled so far away. I truely feel for you. It is difficult to know when the right time to go is. Unfortunately we can't be with our loved ones all the time.

message 408: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2382 comments Thanks, guys. No updates since this morning. This summer he had some stents put in and then TAVR (transcather aortic valve replacement) done after that, and we knew that his renal function was diminished. He also had some vessels that they couldn't place stents in, but up until Christmas, he's been doing okay, just tired. He had a respiratory virus then and still has been tired and weak, complaining of joint pain. He had an appointment to see his doctor later this week. I'm sure I'll hear more later today though.

message 409: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2382 comments Yeah, we were planning to take a little vacation to Florida for a few days next week where one of my sisters and her husband have rented a condo for the month...who knows, maybe that will still happen...or maybe they will have to come home too. We can't control what happens. I don't envy the sister who is the official healthcare proxy if Dad isn't able to indicate what he wants; at this point, it's my understanding that he can't.

message 410: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments Oh, Jean. I am so sorry for you and Christine. It is a very difficult time when elderly parents and surrogate parents (like aunts and uncles) start to have these problems and decisions have to be made. I went through these thing 6 years ago with my mom and it is so hard. Wishing the best to both of you. Follow what's in your heart and what you think is best. Love.

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) | 5101 comments Oh Jean, big hugs from NZ for you. I can only echo what Pat says and follow your heart. You and Christine have our full support. Any time you need a shoulder, we are all here. xoxoxox

Jean | 2382 comments Thanks, guys. Some better news last night. My sister e-mailed the family to say that Dad woke up last night and was able to talk a little and squeeze my brother's hand. His condition still is not good at all, but this is the first positive news, so we'll take it. I'm going up today.

message 415: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2382 comments Dad was moved to another hospital today so they can better assess his complex medical conditions. Lots of fact-finding assessments so far. No extreme interventions will be done, as he is too fragile, but we wanted their expertise here to see if anything's been missed and if anything can be done to make him more comfortable. Poor guy keeps asking for tea, but he can't have anything by mouth because he has trouble swallowing )-:

message 419: by Jean (last edited Jan 21, 2016 07:23AM) (new)

Jean | 2382 comments Still in Duluth with my Dad. He seemed to rally a couple days ago and even played a little cribbage wth assisstance, but he waxes and wanes. Yesterday it looked like we might have to opt for palliative care, but his CT scan didn't show anything new. He had a significant stroke affecting his left side, and his heart and kidneys are not in good shape either, so he is quite fragile. The doctors expect that they will have a better indication after a few more days which way he will go, but they don't expect much in the way of recovering ability to function, i.e., care for himself. Heading back to Rochester today. Other family will be around, and I expect to be coming back soon. Thanks for all your support. It means a lot.

Sue (coccotoro) | 2087 comments Today I have a heavy heart. Yesterday our best friend(he was only 51 years old), who had gone to Mendoza, Argentina, for Christmas, to be with his dad...was killed in the living room of his dad's house, point blank...1 shot to the heart, yesterday morning . (6:00A.M.) in the morning. The detectives say it was a hit over money? The victim, our friend, Alberto, was there with 1 of his daughters and 2 grandchildren. The other daughter is living at her dad'd house, close to us in Toronto. My husband, Enrique is best friends with the daddy and saw the son, Alberto grow up.
It is the daughter's wish to bring their father back to Toronto, for the funeral, but based on the investigation going on there...who knows when?

Seems like a bad dream. We have been up all night. Can't sleep.

message 428: by Aymen (new)

Aymen Ben cheikh Sorry for your loss Sue, this is terrible, life can be worse than the scariest stories we read about... I feel sorry for the family, what can I say... last year my friend was killed by his own brother in front of their mother...another friend was killed and I still don't know why, his family are not talking about it... Personnaly I believe that every person is meant to die in a precised day, even if they stay home alone, nothing can change that.

message 429: by Jean (new)
