Vicki Willis | 510 comments What type of read-a-thonner are you? Do you make plans for TBR, food and check ins ahead of time? Or do you play it by ear?
Are you an all or nothing participant or do you read as you can during the read a thon?

message 2: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis | 510 comments I used to be all or nothing when it comes to the read a thon. If I couldn't commit to the whole thing, I wouldn't want to do it. Now I participate as I can if the weekend doesn't really work for me.
This weekend I won't be able to participate much, but I am excited to do some reading.
I like to plan my TBR ahead of time and have a list of books to pick from. I try to have a novel, an audio, a shorter book and maybe a middle aged book.

I hope everyone's reading is going great!

Christy Collins | 39 comments I'm an all-(or at least most)-or-nothing readathon-er.
I buy a few treats ahead and assemble a TBR pile to select from, but I don't do any other special prep.

Lamilla | 818 comments I have just joined. 7AM here! I usually don't aim for 24 hours and love to browse other people's progress. My favourite challenge of the last years is bingo board.

Good variety of books definitely helps!

We are busy here in our apartment building doing so repairs and security. There is a life -and- reading balance dance going on here too. I will do my best.

message 6: by Carol (new)

Carol Evans | 18 comments I play it by ear, but I usually get some treats and I always have a TBR pile ready.

message 7: by Nona (new)

Nona | 138 comments I don't feel the need to be all in if it doesn't work out, but most times it does.

I usually make one healthy dish in advance and get some (healthy and non-healthy) snacks.

I like to plan a potential TBR. Generally I order any books I might need from the library early enough that they'll come in time. This time I left it too late to do that, but I still managed to get together a good pile of books I'm excited about reading.

So I guess I'm not all or nothing, but I do like to do a reasonable amount of planning.

message 8: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) | 569 comments I always have a TBR and a lot of running and planned buddy reads, so I just use those for my readathon TBR. I might consciously try to have some short stories and a comic ready, if I don‘t have them on my normal TBR already. Just to mix it up.

Foodwise I rarely do something special. I‘m not a snack person anyway. I might tend to get something that I can prepare quickly. I doesn‘t really matter, as I listen to audio when preparing meals during a readathon anyway.

So, generally, my readathon weekends don‘t differ much from my other weekends. A little more focussed on the reading and I tend to postpone reviewing what I finish until afterwards.

Yes, having a special treat on Read a Thon day is always nice!

Bingo is always fun. Do you make your own board or use a prepared one? Do you usually get a black out?

It is funny how life tends to get in the way right at read a thon time. I ended up with a toothache this year and that was no fun!

Looking at other people's TBR is fun for me. It doesn't help with me whittling down my own though! The never ending TBR is one thing that makes GoodReads what it is.

I make my bingo board in an online tool. I usually base it on someone else's board, just flavour a bit to fit my taste. My last one is quite tipical: https://bingobaker.com/#66a3d6fcf85be97c I almost always get a line, but I think I never fillled the full board

Prepping a healthy dish is so smart. There definitely have been years when I ate too much junk food and felt sick and well as exhausted. Not fun!

Yes, I love audio books for that reason too.
Even though I listen at 1.25x speed, my audio book reading is significantly slower than my real reading. But any time with a book is a good time!

Cathy (cathepsut) | 569 comments I‘m usually somewhere between 1.2 and 1.5 speed. A Marvellous Light is running at 1.35 speed right now. My eye-reading is at a similar speed, but it depends on the book.

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments I’m a definite all in readathon-er. If I won’t be able to fully participate, I won’t participate at all. That’s why I want to know the new date as soon as possible. In April and October i take the Friday and Monday off too and I rent a place with my reading buddy (somewhere in the middle of nowhere preferably) so nobody will disturb us. I plan ahead (snacks, reads and schedule for the day). And I prepare by reading 4-5 books up until the last 100-200 pages so I can alternate ánd finish books.
I like to start and finish at the official hours, even though I do take time to sleep and cheer my fellow readathoners on on social media (timed otherwise I lose too much of my reading time).

I love that you do this! It sounds like such a special and fun time :-)
