I second Alan's recommendation of Black Mouth by Ronald Malfi. I consider Malfi a master of creating dark atmospheric worlds. I have yet to read Incidents Around the House, so I can't speak to it - yet! It's on my TBR list though.

For the 20th Century, I recommend

Among modern authors, I suggest the works of John Huber, such as

I second/third both of these. Alan was the one that got me interested in [book:Incidents Around the House|199757490], and it did NOT disappoint.

The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker is really good and it's a quick read.
Flowers In The Attic by V.C. Andrews is definitely delves deeply into the ongoing internal struggles of the protagonist.
and how do you feel about dystopian fiction? Tender is The Flesh is dystopian horror and one of my very favorites

So far, I have read Pet Sematary by Stephen King, The Broken Girls by Simone St. James, and A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson and I loved all of them. I really appreciate stories with a gloomy, eerie atmosphere. I also enjoy reading books where the protagonist is fighting some sort of internal battle or struggle, but there needs to be an underlying plot to keep me engaged.
Where do you think I should start? Do you have any recommendations for this horror newbie?
