Kim (kimbobo) I went old school for a bit and choose a book from the list from a looooooooong time ago.

This was a simple quick read. But I could certainly read this one over again for more details and I know I would come up with different thoughts.

**********BEWARE SPOILERS**************

The tragic love story mixed in with a harsh social commentary about slavery. I would really like to read more about how this novel came to be. Who was Aphra Behn? and what experiences did she have that lead her to write this book.

I may update later with further thoughts, but I'm still digesting this one.

Melanie Hi Kim,
I'm new to the group (still waiting for my copy of 1001 Books to arrive). I read Oroonoko about 10 years ago (Rise of the Novel class taught with an emphasis on female authors) and was excited to see that it made the list. I definitely plan to dig it up and re-read it again.

Russ Aphra Behn was the first professional female writer; that is, the first woman to make a living solely by writing. She was a very successful playwright but dabbled in nearly all the popular styles of the time. I read Oroonoko even longer ago than Melanie (I'm showing my age), so my recall of details is spotty at best.
