Hello all! It would be nice to get to know one another a little here. Introduce yourselves here and say hi!

Top 3 favourite books?
What do you do to get over the reading slumps?
Do you read at home and snuggled in bed, or outdoors at the park?
Best snack while reading?
Do you have any pets?
Other than reading, what are your hobbies?

Serious question: Can you make Mango Ice Box? If yes, send to me. If your answer is no, google the recipe, get those ingredients, and have a go. It’s delicious

Cynder | 4 comments i'll make this my first goodreads comment 😁

- current top 3: atomic habits, spark joy, dracula
- to get over my latest reading slump, i started setting myself challenges to read a certain number of books per month... this didn't work out according to plan, so i joined goodreads, and tracking my word count has helped a lot!
- i have set up a reading pile in my bed. it is very cosy, so i often start to drift off while i'm reading 😄 i'm not too fussy about where i read, but silence helps me focus
- ooh... don't really eat while i'm reading, but if i had to choose, i'd want a bowl of salty cashews or some other savoury little crunchy thing
- used to have a lovely tabby cat, who was my best friend 🥰 i looove cats
- besides reading, i like to do yoga, hand-crafts and play video games... though right now, i'm leaning a liiittle too much into the games

i have no idea what Mango Ice Box is but i will take your word for it and give it a whirl!

Carmen | 9 comments Hello hellloooooo. So excited for this and to get to know everyone and what books they are reading.

Okay top 3 books mix of current and ever: Ready Player One, currently obsessed with Fourth Wing/Iron Flame, and Name of the Wind series

How do I get out of a reading slump: Well the most recent one is that I found out about the Romantasy genre (very late to this genre I think haha). First intro to it was The Serpent and the Wings of Night.

Where do I read and snacks: I mainly read at home, curled up on my sofa with a blanket and my weighted unicorn. I don’t really snack while reading because I don’t want to get my kindle or books dirty, but I do have cup of coffee or tea next to me though.

Pets: No with me in my flat, but I have a shitzu named Caro who lives with my dad

Other hobbies: Love playing videos games (although I’m
currently in a slump so need to find a game to get me back into it). Boxing - I go do a boxing class 2x a week. And I do enjoy going to the cinema.

Mango ice box cake - I personally don’t know how to make but I know who can send one to you 😉

• Current Top 3: Gosh this is harder than I thought since my favourites change often… the books that changed my life, or the way I enjoy reading, are Mistborn (I can’t decide on the favourite between the first trilogy but the 3rd one had the best ending of any series), Name of the Wind, and Frankenstein.
• To get over reading slump: I struggle with this constantly! I love to read, and sometimes get so hung up over a good book, I can’t move on. Hopefully this book club keeps me motivated as I’m inspired by you.
• My reading nook: If I’m not reading myself to sleep at night, I have a little spot in my office that’s cozy right under a window. My cat’s tower is next to it too so I can hang out with my kitten while reading.
• Snacks: chocolate. Bags of it.
• Pets: A very dopey, and sweet rescue Pitbull named Bamboo. He’s the big baby of our household. He is afraid of the wind blowing outside, and loves to pop soap bubbles. We also have a very scrappy Cocker Spaniel who spends all day diving into bushes and rolling in the mud. Recently, we added a cuddly and insanely cute golden British Shorthair to the family, Millie.
• Hobbies: I LOVE swimming. I could spend all day in a pool on a hot summer day. Though I haven’t kept up with it in a while, I really enjoyed lifting weights to build strength and muscles. I need to restart my fitness routine soon 😅 my favourite way to spend my alone time is playing video games.

Mango ice box is amazing. Best dessert because I could eat it every day and never get sick of it.

holly holly (flowerpixel) | 34 comments So basically I like barely read books growing up and started to binge read a year ago but I'm slacking again unfortunately

1) top 3 (at the moment)
Robin hobb realm of the elderlings series. Maybe assassin's apprentice. I cried 5x reading it. highly highly recommend

Silent spring (nonfiction)

Crooked Kingdom - there's a couple featured in this trilogy I will ship to my death even if the fantasy is a little silly

2) I have watched booktube to get over reading slumps! I love lists and tiers

3) I read in bed with fairy lights on and ambient YouTube channels on my nice TV

4) not food but I'm addicted to sparkling water or tea. In the summer I chug hibiscus tea

5) Yes I have a puppy who is a Brussels Griffon (ewoks in star wars are based on this breed). He kills me. I can't wait for him to get a little bit older. His name is Basil

6) I have major health issues but I love gardening, and if my hand issues were better drawing and teaching myself light coding. I also think modding games would be so much fun but I have to avoid it

Felix McCartney | 3 comments Top 3 books are; The Way of Kings, Fear the Sky, The Blade Itself.

Join a book club to try and encourage myself to read more 😂 (haven't read much tbh that's why I'm here).

I have to either read or listen to an audio book in bed or my ADHD wont let me focus on it.

No snacking, I'm not nearly active enough to allow myself to do that.

2 small dogs, 1 that is that is obsessed with me and the other couldn't care who it was with so long as they feed it .

Swimming, going into a Sauna, Learning unity/coding, and of course Video Games!!! especially any kind of single player RPG fantasy.

More of a Lemon Dessert fan myself :P

Hi Cynder!

I'm the same with reading challenges, they never work for me and then it's disheartening to see myself falling faaaar behind which then starts a cycle of not reading. That's what I'm hoping this little bookclub will do, that we can inspire one another to continue reading and talking excitedly about the books we love, and dissecting the ones we dnf to figure out what to avoid in the future.
I always have my kindle or a stack of books I intend to read by my bedside as well! I find it's comforting and a good motivator for me.
Cats are the best! Building a bond with them takes patience and trust, but it's so rewarding when they pick you as their human.

Hi bb

You and I are going to be the smutty burden here for a while XD I'm so glad we discovered romantasy together lol Everyone will have to suffer us for a while before we start heading back to other genres. I really need to read Way of the Kings, but I can't when I have ACOTAR waiting in my kindle.

If your mom wants to send me Mango Ice Box, I will not say no >.>

Hi flower!

I'm so happy you're here! It's nice to see that this very of-the-moment decision to create this club has sparked interest and given a little space for our hobby.

Assassin's Apprentice! Omg that book came to me at a time in my life I REALLY needed it. I read through the entire trilogy within 2 weeks I think and I cried through all of it as well. There is something about Robin Hobb's more contemporary style (for fantasy) of writing that let me see through Fitz's eyes with such clarity. I should make a shelf of must read fantasy and that would definitely be in there.

You need to recommend some of those booktubes! I would love to see lists and reviews.

Hi Basil! That's an insanely cute name for a tiny tyrant. The puppy phase is the most difficult time. No sleep, theyre chewing up everything, theyre slightly suicidal, the accidents everywhere, its like having a baby tbh. But it's over before you know it, and they will never have that sweet puppy breath again. One day, you will look back fondly on how stupidly adorable they were. I know it's said often, but I cannot stress enough how much better it will be for you and the puppy to take long and engaging walks together every day. It really helps with building a great bond, and minimises their little mischiefs.

I feel for you with those health issues, it\s difficult to do the things you love with that constantly looming just overhead. I'm glad to hear you don't let it define you, and you still do the things you love like gardening! I would kill any plant just by touching it, my husband has the green thumb and without him we wouldn't have this lush and thriving garden. The nursery is in our bathroom, so I feel like I take a shower in a forest XD it gets a little wild at times.

Hello Felix!

That's what I'm hoping with this book club. I also struggle with consistency, and I want us to motivate one another by inspiring others with the stories we read.

I'm impressed! You don't read much but made it through that behemoth of a book; Way of Kings! I just found my new copy so I intend on finishing it before the end of the year. I heard the 2nd book is even better. As someone with ADHD, what tools or methods do you use to stay focused when reading?

You reminded me that I need to start exercising again XD I almost never snack, my one weakness is chocolate, however lately I've been snacking entirely too much and I will start paying for it soon.

I love the contrast between your two dogs lol the dualism of the dogs. I'm so jealous of my husband's spaniel, who is obsessed with him too, she can't be more than 1ft away from him.

Swimming is the best! I love feeling weightless in the water, floating around, dulling the sound of everything else around me. I could be in pool or the ocean all day if I could.

Love that we all bonded over video games, and that brought us together here as an extension for our love of fantasy.

it's funny you mention puppies are suicidal because basil is!! a few weeks ago he started eating mushrooms, including "the vomitter" and he eats acorns and woodchips. i have to pry them out of his mouth! yeah i'm trying to take him on little adventure walks. i know in the long run itll pay off. he is VERY attached to me <3

im a huge fitz chivalry fan. he influenced the youtube channels i follow because he can be a bit polarizing. some people think he's whiny and dumb. most, not all, of the channels i follow are hobb fans, i think. i havent binged on them in about a yr because i started binging on videogames (BG3 lol!) but like petrik leo, tall guy reads, fantasy nuttwork, theres a group of girls who read the ENTIRE series and made long youtubes about it #elderlingalong which i thought was impressive. i followed all of them (becca and the books). also library of a viking, elliot brooks, the book leo. unresolved textual tension. i do not agree with all of their reviews but they are very snarky and entertaining. when a book is overhyped, theyll have no problems criticizing it.

i think you'd love liveship. it's very actiony which im not normally into as much but it's soooooooooo good.

that's cool your husband is into gardening! i had no idea i loved gardening until a few years ago and i grew flowers from seed then suddenly i was addicted. and it opened up a whole world to me. he prob feels the same way. but yeah disability is weird. the key is to modify anything i do. like i never thought i'd be able to play any videogames at all but it turns out i can. turn-based crpgs are a perfect fit for me and i never liked action or platformer games much anyway.

well that's the beauty of hyper-focus, if I start a book i'm interested in, it is usally harder to get me to stop and remeber to sleep. I can easily stay up all night and read through a book if i'm not careful.

Typically it is starting tasks that is difficult for me, I use a technique were I work on something for 20 min and then take a 5 min break and repeat this 4-5 times and then reward myself with a longer break.

Just started the Mistborn series as I only just learnt that it is connected to stormlight and I never knew of the expanded universe.

These booktube recommendations are great! I'm saving them to watch whenever I feel like I need a little kick in the butt to read. Sometimes I love the snarky comments too lol

Ok next year's goal for me is to definitely get through more of Robin Hobbs trilogies. I love her writing and I was so hung up on Fitz, but I think its time to fall in love with more characters.

If you met my husband, he would drag you outside with him to do some gardening XD he loves it. He leaves me indoors because he knows I am a plant murderer. It's always amazing to me when I hear of the ways others manage their disabilities, it's inspiring that there is always a way. Defeat is just learning how to succeed in another way.

Thank you for answering this question! I asked because I think methods like this can be so helpful to others as well. ADHD is an immense hill to climb, and I gather it can be quite frustrating. I appreciate you sharing this with us.

The Mistborn series is so good! Actually, I think what truly shines is the way the trilogy ends. It's one of the best endings to a trilogy I've read that perfectly summarises everything that has happened in the previous novels. It's beautifully written. You start Mistborn, and i'll finally get through Stormlight Archives! I heard a new book from the Stormlight is coming out early next year? I think

Hello there everyone! Nice to meet you all :D
Finally got some time to post in here, I'm really excited to be a part of the book club hehe

My top three favorite books are The Jasmine Throne, She Who Became the Sun and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo! I usually read queer stories (not all of them with romance as a main point) but I'm looking to broaden my horizons, I love to try new stuff c:

To get over reading slumps I usually give myself time with other hobbies, even if that takes days or even months, switching things up helps my brain miss reading and I get right back on it lol

I usually read at home and when I do I isolate myself in my room for a little while and put some calm music 'cause I'm someone that needs white noise!

I don't tipically eat anything while reading but I love a good cup of coffee or other beverage, as the group says, stay hydrated everyone! c;

I have two cats! The youngest is named Chester and he is a menace to his sister and the rest of the household and the eldest is named Miri and she's a lady who's not very patient with her younger sibling and I love them both so much <3

Other than reading I play video games, I'm currently doing a concept artist course 'cause drawing is everything to me, I play instruments and I'm a massive nerd who likes to collect and paint miniatures from Warhammer to D&D c:

Just googled Mango Ice Box and now I'm seriously debating going out to a 24-hours supermarket (it's currently 1am where I live lol) to buy the ingredients to do it, it looks ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS

message 17: by Hubert (new)

Hubert | 1 comments Hi everyone! It's nice to meet you all and be a part! Have you already established any positions to read and make preys for discussion?

I cannot really ever pick favourites 'cause then I feel guilty for not including the unpicked ones. However, I tend to remember some authors more than others, when it comes to fantasy that would be Brent Weeks and Terry Pratchett, for example. As I am Polish I would also have to include some of this country's literature into my recommendations but I don't even know if those books were ever translated.
Having said that, I enjoy various novels from different historical periods and I am quite big with poetry, especially from the Romantic era. Somebody mentioned Frankenstein as one of their favourites and I immediately thought of some P.B. Shelley's poems lol. The creative output of Mary and Percy is phenomenal and definitely deserves proper recognition, I also think that it is sad how Frankenstein's monster tends to be simplified by the public eye!

As for reading slumps, I cannot really allow myself those because I study English lit (is it cheating?) and I got them deadlines to catch. While I usually used to read quite slowly and lazily, I had to pick up some pace! Forcing myself sometimes takes the pleasure away though, it really mostly depends on the book.

I usually don't snack while reading, just mostly drink a lot. A theine-based organism basically at this point. I got a small dog who is an embodiement of curiosity, a lack of self-awareness, and joy.

I definitely enjoy spending time around nature, I (very amateurly) play the kalimba and harmonica when beside a campfire. Video games as well, of course, easier to pick favourites in this medium as well.Just generally love learning about history, cultures, languages, too. Oh and from a more random angle, I recently started sewing pillows.

Andrea (sadrocketeer) | 3 comments Oh hi everyone 😈

My top fav books change often so the current ones on the list are “On A Sunbeam”, “On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous” and “Crush”.

I alternate between reading a graphic novel and reading a novel to help with a slump. I read a lot for work so graphic novels are helpful for me to take breaks on many many words heheh.

Usually read wherever. I like reading at my desk the most.

I wish I can snack whilst I read, I’m a bit messy with that. I drink lemonades or any other juice a lot when I read tho!

One little mixed Shiba Inu, she turns 5 next month.

Playing video games and swimming. I watch a lot of movies. I love going to screenings the most, cinema experience is a favourite of mine. I really enjoy going to any sort of film, hopes it will be good but you never know.

Anyway. Hi everyone. Thanks for inviting me here Jacqui.
