The Wren, the Wren question

Having purchased this book on Kindle following good reviews in both the Guardian and New York Times, my main regret (apart from wasting money) was that I could not have the pleasure of seeing it burn on my fire.
All the sentiments expressed about people and experiences are negative, and the passage about the hideous cruelty to an elderly dog was the final straw.
To be avoided at all costs, particularly if you have any feelings for dogs.
