25.5 - Lisa MD’s Task: Bookopoly

Bookopoly game board

It’s game night for the SRC, so pull up your armchair, turn on your reading lamp, and prepare to turn some pages because we are going to play Bookopoly.

Bookopoly is a boardgame which allows players to glimpse inside the world of classic literature. Inspired by the classic boardgame, Monopoly, players roll dice to move their tokens around a board, where they can buy, sell, and trade properties. In this case, properties are books, and the player can buy bookstores and trade them in for libraries. Each property card has printed on its back facts about the book and author. To add to the fun, players may land on the space “Explore!” or “Knowledge,” which requires them to pick an action card and follow its instructions. Let’s begin and see who may win the title of President of the Book Club.

This is a 2-book task.

Dicer Roller: https://www.calculator.net/dice-rolle...

Book 1:
Roll the 6-sided die to see which token you will be playing with, then read a book whose title and/or subtitle contain the letters of your game piece.
Required: State the number of the die you rolled.

1 – Worm
2 - Ship
3 - Glasses
4 - Bee
5 - Horse
6 -Whale

Book 2:
Roll the 6-sided die to see what property or action your token lands on, then read a book to satisfy the description.
Required: State the number of the die you rolled.

1 –Property:
You landed on a Genre property. Read a book from one of these genres listed on the board: Romance, Mystery, Humor, Sci-Fi, or Fantasy. Genre must appear on Main Page, standalone or embedded.

2 – Buy a Bookstore:
Independent book stores are celebrated one day in the month of April across the United States and also for a week in June in the U.K. and Ireland. Read a book originally published in April or June of any year.

3- Explore! Card:
Read a book whose title and/or subtitle contains an exclamation point, question mark, colon, or hyphen.

4 – Trade Your Bookstores for a Library:
Read a book that features a bookstore or library in the story. The bookstore or library must be essential to the storyline (e.g. a main character works there, or it's a key location within the plot), not merely a passing sentence where someone stops in a bookstore or library.
Required: If this is not clear from the book description, then provide a reference.

5 – Knowledge Card:
Read a book whose author’s first and last initials can be found in ENCYCLOPEDIA or WIKIPEDIA. Your book may have multiple authors, only one needs to meet the criteria.
Required: State which word you used.

6 – President of the Book Club:
Read a book whose title contains a word of four or more letters that can be made from the phrase, “President of the Book Club.” Letters may only be used as often as they appear.

Is Science Fiction okay? Or should I be looking for Sci-Fi?

Robin P | 1625 comments For Book 1, the letters don't need to be intact, just found in the title, is that right? I got 1 for Worm, so I could read a book with Tomorrow in the title, or a book like A Walk to Remember?

Sci-Fi is shorthand for Science Fiction, so yes that's ok.

That's correct. Letters just have to appear in title and or subtitle. The word doesn't have to be intact, so your options work.

You should get 2 dice when you use the dice roller link

Robin P | 1625 comments You can also do it 2 separate times, there is a dropdown to choose how many dice. As usual for me, I didn't read all the directions first, I did the first one for Book 1, then I saw I needed another one for Book 2 so I just went back and selected 1 die again. I got 1 and 3.

It is two separate rolls. Use the dropdown menu to select 1 die, then roll for your game token number, then roll again for the number to land on your activity. The numbers may end up being the same through the luck of the roll.

can you get that clarified because the 2 separate rolls isn't clear in the instructions - i just rolled 2 dice at the same time

That is fine too, if you rolled two die and used the first for your token and second die for your action.

Would this book work for Book 2 #4?

Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books

That works. It sounds good.

Lys (lysrowan) | 271 comments I want to use this for Book 2 #4.
It is the location where the majority of the book occurs. The character 'escapes' into books in the library and then into a hidden world through a passage the librarian shares with her - a metaphorical fantasy land where she must confront her grief before returning to the library to reunite with her mother.
Does that work?

It fits my tasks requirement; however, "Middle Grade" is present as a main page genre and you will need to follow SRC rules to verify it meets those requirements.
