I guess Mods can also credibly imitate the expression above. 😉

Melindam | 8304 comments Here I am on a grey and rainy Friday morning, just sneaking away from a meeting that could've been an email and decided to act as a co-player-from-hell (instead of co-worker) and planning a blow to my long-suffering TBR: what are the books you are looking forward/planning to read in October? (that is - if you are planners 😉)

I can say that the current BOM - The Ministry of Time - is a LOT of fun. I've also got Saint Death's Daughter (Saint Death, #1) by C.S.E. Cooney on the rack. Those are prob both before the challenge starts.

Coming up: Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn ; A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher ; Ex-Wife by Ursula Parrott ; Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar ; We Will Not Be Saved A memoir of hope and resistance in the Amazon rainforest by Nemonte Nenquimo ; Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell

Will have a look at all your recs a bit later.

message 18: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments Cat, I just finished Saint Death's Daughter and hope you enjoy it. It is a bit of a mess but enjoyable.

I have seven meetings today which seems a bit rough for a Friday.

I am hoping the extra points finally convinces me to read The Brothers Karamazov. Also, I have some other large fantasy books that I hope to have motivation to read, but I haven't been in a high fantasy mood recently.

SEVEN meetings?! that's not cool! I have a team meeting in the graveyard slot on Fridays, which is a nice wind-down to shutting off, but apart from that my day today is pretty clear. and it's a Friday, so mighty few drop-bys. Monday, however, is looking rammed :(

Tee hee! Brothers K would be a good one!

We were hoping that the bonus points would be helpful for the classics stuck on everyone's TBR. Fingers crossed

My goal is to clear some longer ones but I tend not to plan over much until I have a word/letters. Then I go into planning overdrive. LOL

message 21: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments I need to finally tackle Little Dorrit, so those extra points are welcome. :))

message 22: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments And ideed, I'm trying to hold off planning until we learn what the first word's going to be. :)

message 23: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments The only thing I'm currently planning on reading for sure is Life And Fate - a colleague recommended this to me because we were talking about how we both loooooved War and Peace, so I want to get to it asap!

Me and a friend were planning to do Crime and Punishment as our Russian Brick of the Year but now it's been usurped by this 😅

Those bonus points are surely tempting. Definitely eyeing some of those longer tomes on my TBR. ;)

message 33: by Jhmingos (new)

Jhmingos | 704 comments This is one of my favorite reading challenges, but I'm particularly excited about Wheels this year. I'm a backlist and classics reader so I'm happy to hear I'll get some bonus points for reading older books.

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments It's has been quite awhile since I've done the wheel challenge and glad I joined this round.

message 35: by Christina T (new)

Christina T (crysteena73) | 182 comments I estimated my number of books per round at 10 thinking not all my read books will help the team. I'm hoping I didn't grossly underestimate. I tend to read 30 or so books a month though. How did everyone else come up with their round numbers?

message 36: by Roe (new)

Roe (roelynn) | 278 comments Rounds are two weeks so i took my monthly reads and divided it in 1/2

I just took what I would normally read in a challenge and if I need to, I’ll just read bigger books to not go over

I went with 10 per round of 2 weeks as well. Many times I may read over that but I am figuring not all of my books fit. This month I plan to do some children's audio for the spooky season and some of those aren't word count for NRBC, and some of the books I read may not be as worth it page count wise, so 10 seemed a safe estimate.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12884 comments I did much the same as Erin. I signed up for 10 per round, even though I am currently reading about double that. most are super short books for Turf Wars though, so I'll just not use any of those. 😁

message 42: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 816 comments I have a bunch of books to read in October/ November for other challenges but figured some will fit for this one. I do like the team challenges. I think I'll get the shortest one out of the way before we start because it's just over 100 pages.

Cat, so sorry to bother you but I just realised you said "per round" and a round seems to be 2 weeks. In that case, my number should be 6 per round. I thought it was the per week number we were supposed to enter. Thanks and sorry again for the trouble.

message 45: by Annalisa (last edited Oct 05, 2024 05:10AM) (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I would love to join Wheel. However, I live in an Asheville and this theme is more appropriate than you would know. I have no power, water, internet, and cell is still spotty. All I can say is I took running water for granted and when you have to go collect water to drink, water to flush, find a location that brought in mobile showers, try and find food and hope the camp stove still has fuel. Well it is exhausting.

I might join as a reserve when we have power/internet back as I need something like this. However, I can’t estimate a bi-weekly reading rate nor would it stay the same as utilities come back online and I’m spending less of my day on finding life essentials.

I hope everyone enjoys the challenge. I’m sorry to be missing it.

message 46: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments Sounds awful, Annalisa. :(( Take care and fingers crossed things will improve soon for you.

message 47: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8052 comments Annalisa, I was just reading about the water supply having been thoroughly messed up by Helene in NC. Hopefully you at least get electricity soon soon soon so you can boil some rain water for drinking and making coffee.

I think you should sign up for Wheel anyway. Just put yourself down for 2 books a round or something, and if your team has to take up the slack in the first couple of weeks, I'll bet they won't mind. It sounds like you could use the occasional silly banter when you get cell service going right now.

message 48: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments Secondig what Jenny says. ♡

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I have been horrified with all the damage with this storm, especially the horrible flooding and damge in NC and TN. Really hoping water and electricity and internet and all is restroed for you soon, Annalisa

Melissa | 3779 comments I’m so sorry Annalisa! I hope that things get easier for you and your family soon. It’s so devastating seeing the destruction and so heartbreaking hearing all of the stories.

I third what Jenny says, join a team and do what you can if that’s what you need!
