Q4 Oct-Dec short story collection is Father Brown: Selected Stories by G.K. Chesterton. The collection includes volumes 1-5 of the Father Brown stories. Father Brown is a British detective in a similar vein as Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, and Ralph McInerny's Roger Dowling. Yet, Father Brown is uniquely Chesterton's own character.

From GR: Father Brown, one of the most quirkily genial and lovable characters to emerge from English detective fiction, first made his appearance in The Innocence of Father Brown in 1911. That first collection of stories established G K Chesterton's kindly cleric in the front rank of eccentric sleuths.

This collection contains all the favourite Father Brown stories. They represent the quiet wit and compassion which is so different from his moody and caustic predecessor, Sherlock Holmes. Father Brown solves his mysteries by a mixture of intuition and sympathetic worldliness in a totally believable manner.

If you are familiar with these classic detectives or would like to learn more about their comparisons, check out these two articles:

Happy sleuthing!

Over the years I've read all of the Father Brown stories. The earliest stories are a bit weak but they get better with each book.
They're a lot of fun.

My MIL was watching a Father Brown TV show the other night. Idk if she's ever read the books bc she hasn't been a reader in the entire time I've known my husband.

The series has one thing in common with books, Father Brown.
In the books, he travels all over the place and hangs out with a wide variety of characters. One of his best friends is a reformed thief.

There are variations available on kindle. If you're asking about KU, I'm unsure.

Bernard Smith | 126 comments I read many of the stories when I was a teen. The UK TV series is amazingly popular. But I am waiting for the Napoleon of Notting Hill.

Good News: I've fallen under the spell of a man, round face blank with surprise, short-sighted in a rusty-black clerical garb.
I loved every mystery and awaited the clairon call of Fr. Brown repeted in every chapter: "nonsense". Fr Brown, whose business is to believe in things.... admits he is doubtful, noncommittal,. That makes the stories so enjoyable...the irony of an agnostic priest (...aka the keenest of sleuths).

Bad News: Nothing to mention...the book was sheer delight!

Personal: I've seen Father Brown series on the TV but never stopped to watch it. Now I know what I've been missing. These stories have everything: ghosts, secret staircases, concealed weapons, suspect confessing to a crime that never was committed., a clairvoyant dog, Father Brown and some very nice wine....and a string of rosary beads!

Kathy E | 2349 comments Sounds wonderful, Nancy. I'm waiting for a Father Brown Omnibus edition to come in from the library. I read The Wisdom of Father Brown and enjoyed that.

G.K. Chesterton must be one of the most underrated writers. I was very impressed with his creation of Fr. Brown as a "no nonsense" gumshoe!

Wijdan (isphe) | 73 comments Just started listening to the first book The Innocence of Father Brown and I can see why it's not the best of the author's books, I have only read two stories and Father Brown seemed like a secondary character which was a bit confusing.
