message 1: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver | 3047 comments I am not receiving the notifications like I have in the past. I received a notification for every post and comment in PBT. Now, I get almost nothing. I have not changed my notifications, and I have reviewed the settings to make sure everything is set correctly.

Any suggestions?

Robin P | 5759 comments There are a lot of complaints about this. Some Mods need to monitor various time-sensitive games. Also someone with a visual impairment said her screen reader, which reads the text aloud to her, now has to go through whole pages to get to the new stuff. You can submit a complaint/query to GR Help, but you will probably just get a form response. But they have sometimes reversed changes, like a couple years ago, when you couldn't embed a link in your message, even to another GR site.

GR doesn't value groups, which is the main reason people want notifications. Ridiculous that they don't see that it is the groups that bring so many of us to the site multiple times a day. If we just wanted to keep track of our own books or post reviews, there are many other sites for that. In a way, I'm surprised they have supported us this long. My opinion is that when Amazon bought GR, they basically bought us, the consumers they can now advertise to.

Sue | 2723 comments I see there's a new check box at the bottom of each thread "Notify me when people comment".

I'll start checking boxes, prefer the old method of receiving notification of any topic I've posted in.

KateNZ | 4100 comments That’s weird, Jason. None of the changes should have affected your notification settings except for the things that aren’t emailed any more. Buggy as usual, sigh.

Sounds like they are mirroring the notification method that they use on the app - you have to opt in to receiving notifications from any thread, rather than having to opt out. And it always asks whether you want to get notifications from all updates in a group so if you genuinely want to get everything you can.

Personally I like the opt-in feature a lot as it reduces noise (it’s also better manners). Notifications about everything from a busy group like this would drive me screaming up the wall. Instead of notifications for everything except very specific threads, I use the ‘unread topics’ feature to display a list of what’s been going on - it’s quick and easy. But how well it works for screen readers (if at all) I don’t know.

Jason Oliver | 3047 comments That’s the issue. I like seeing everyone’s post in the group. Seeing what everyone is reading. Seeing with a new topic is posted. I don’t get that now. Is there a way to opt in everything?

message 6: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments I can’t see how from the web version, Jason. Too frustrating. - - There doesn’t seem to be a ‘notify me about everything in a group’ option anywhere at the bottom or top of the group page.
- Individual threads don’t have an ‘everything in the group’ option, only the opt in for other comments on the thread itself. - The group activity buttons on their new little notification page don’t seem to work that way - at least I’m not getting pinged every time something gets added, and I have the PBT box checked.
- you might be able to get a daily digest of group activity (I haven’t tested it) but that doesn’t have the same immediacy.

You could trigger it from the app by simply selecting the ‘everything’ option under topic notification settings at the end of a thread but I can’t see an equivalent on the web. Aaagh. Surely there is something somewhere?

In the meantime, the ‘unread’ button is probably your best friend…

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12583 comments I also just use "the un-read" notices-so the change is not really effecting me.

Jason Oliver | 3047 comments I don't know how it happened, but I think my notifications are fixed. I am getting notified of every PBT post. Woohoo!!!!

My notifications went out with my internet provider when Hurricane Helene hit Augusta, GA. When I was ever to access internet at my daughters, I discovered my group notifications were gone. I thought it was associated with the hurricane, but now I find that others experiences the same problem. Unlike Jason, mine have not returned. I do receive book offerings and my daily friends reads but not the other ones.

Joy D | 10106 comments My notifications have been broken for a long time and have not been fixed. So I hope people here will forgive me if I don't notice your comment on my reviews. It's not intentional - just that I don't know about it.

LibraryCin | 11696 comments I use(d) entire group notifications for a couple of groups where there is not a lot of activity. It annoys me that those are gone!

Jason, hopefully they will come back for me, too. I hope...
