Booknblues | 12095 comments Where do you find “ series, setting, characters”?

message 3: by Theresa (last edited Oct 13, 2024 09:02AM) (new)

Theresa | 15567 comments Examples: The Daughter of Doctor Moreau has some - under Details and Editions. The link for Rome, Mexico is amazing!

Undead Girl Gang does not.

I had to go through a good number before I found one which had that.

It is under the edition and # of page and looks like this:
Literary awards Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Fiction (2015)
Original title My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry
Setting Sweden
Characters Ulrika, Britt-Marie, Elsa, Sam, George

Jgrace | 3945 comments I don't remember if shelfari had this search feature, but it was possible to add that data about characters and setting. As an audiobook reader I would use this information to check my spelling. I noticed that the information transferred when Amazon 'merged' the two sites ( basically sinking Shelfari completely) but newer publications seem to lack the extra background data.

I hadn't known that about the character name--that's great because sometimes I can't remember where I saw a name, but it's not perfect. Either earlier this month or in September, I wanted to find where I'd seen the name Phronsie before (it turns out it was in Five Little Peppers.) Just now I went to the classic and that character is listed under her full name with Phronsie in parenthesis so it wouldn't help. Also, not all books have characters listed on GR.

Perhaps I ought to edit in characters from books I read the way I used to on Shelfari, but I don't do as much editing here.

Depends on popularity of book and author. Not date published.

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau was published 2022.

Undead Girl Gang published 2018 with low popularity, has none.

It is random however you look at it.

I'm not sure I'd call this a "search" so much as if you find the information (setting, character name, etc) in another book, you can click on it to get to others. "Navigating" is maybe a better word.

So, with that clarification, yes, I do believe we could do this in shelfari, as well, as long as the information had been added. The nice thing at shelfari was that anyone could add that information; you didn't have to be a "librarian" (or have some special status) to do that.

Robin P | 5762 comments I didn't know this either. I knew that some books show location, while others don't,

Karin, I could have told you Phronsie was from Five Little Peppers (I don't remember her real name at all.) It's such a distinctive name.

Can anyone add this information here? (I used to do a LOT of that on shelfari, as well... I think I had just made the top 100 editors before shelfari shut down. Karin, I think you were a bit ahead of me on that top 100 list!) Anyway, I thought to do that kind of editing one had to be a GR librarian or something.

Maybe I'm wrong! Maybe that's just for combining books? (I'm sure I tried (years ago) to combine books and found out you had to be a librarian to do that.)

ETA: One of the "fun" categories we could edit on shelfari (I though it was a fun one, anyway) was called "Ridiculously simplified synopsis". The idea was to keep the synopsis super-short; I can't remember if there was a character limit on that or not (I think there was).

I believe it :) It was bothering me that I couldn't remember, but I'm not good with names as a rule.

Yes, only librarians. There has been a great deal of havoc wreaked with librarians who don't know what they are doing, so a few years ago GR implemented a new system where people have to study and take a test to pass. This hasn't stopped all of the problems from those on before and possibly not some of those who've passed.

There are also enormous problems caused by bots that add books.
